Chapter 328: [ Volume 1] Chaper 328- Suspicious activity

Esme’s frown deepened as she processed the details. Her brow furrowed, and she spoke without missing a beat. "And the third chef?"

Kai’s voice dropped even lower as he spoke the final piece of the puzzle. "They say the third one’s got diarrhea."

Esme’s eyes widened in surprise, but she quickly masked her reaction with a hard, calculating gaze. She closed her eyes briefly, her lips pressing together in a tight line as she thought through the absurdity of it all. She placed her hand on the car’s front, fingers tapping rhythmically against the cool metal, as if trying to ground herself in the midst of the chaos. The tapping was the only sound breaking the tense silence.

Finally, she opened her eyes and looked back at Kai with a piercing intensity. "Jay," she turned to face him, her expression unwavering. "What do you think about all of this?"

Jay, who had been standing quietly beside Kai, took a step forward. His usual cold demeanor was sharper now, his tone icy as he spoke with quiet authority. "It’s all lies," he said, voice thick with suspicion. "It doesn’t make sense. How could the head chef just leave like that? Her daughter’s been sick for weeks—why take leave now, and without notice? And then, the second chef? Hit by a car, but only a light fracture? That’s suspicious in itself. And the kicker? The person who hit him took full responsibility and ensured he stayed in the hospital for a whole week. What’s their game?"

Esme nodded slowly, her expression serious but with a subtle glimmer of amusement. She crossed her arms, her gaze never leaving Jay’s. "Oh, and?"

Jay didn’t miss a beat, his gaze unwavering. "And then, the third chef—diarrhea? That’s absurd. The guy’s a clean freak, he never would have gotten sick like that. It doesn’t add up." His eyes hardened as he continued, his voice almost a whisper now. "I did some digging. The new chefs who’ve replaced them? They’re skilled, no doubt. But their resumes—perfect resumes. Too perfect. It doesn’t feel right. No one’s that flawless."

Esme’s lips quirked upward into a small, knowing smile, though it didn’t reach her eyes. She stood still for a moment, letting the weight of Jay’s words settle in. The puzzle pieces were falling into place, but the picture they were forming didn’t sit well with her.

She turned back to Kai, her eyes glinting with sharp focus. "Oh, is that so?" she asked, her voice smooth but edged with suspicion. "And what’s wrong with that?"

Jay’s voice took on a sharper edge, his usual calm demeanor replaced by a smug expression as he continued. "For three people at our level, known for their work ethic, their dedication, and everything else, to suddenly fall ill? And then, just like that, new chefs appear? And what’s even more convenient is that they all have perfect degrees, the exact kind of qualifications we’ve been looking for. Can anyone honestly believe that?"

His smirk deepened, his eyes glinting with a mix of disbelief and frustration. "The chefs we found—they didn’t come easy. We scoured the industry for them, we vetted them, we found professionals who came from different places, with years of experience. And now, in a matter of hours, all of them go on leave, and suddenly, we’re handed new chefs with flawless resumes? It doesn’t make sense. It’s too neat, too... convenient."

Esme’s lips pressed together as she listened to Jay’s words. His tone was filled with a mix of irritation and a sense of betrayal, and Esme could feel the weight of his suspicion hanging in the air. Jay wasn’t one to speak lightly, especially when it came to something as critical as their chefs—if he was this worked up, the situation was far from simple.

"The timing," Jay continued, leaning in slightly as though to make his point even clearer, "is just too perfect. We put in the work to find the best chefs—now, we’ve got new ones, with impeccable credentials, showing up just when we need them. Coincidence? I don’t think so."

Suddenly, Esme let out a burst of laughter, the sound sharp and unexpected. "Ha ha ha," she laughed, shaking her head in disbelief, her voice almost mocking as she processed the absurdity of it all. Her laughter was loud enough to make Kai and Jay pause, and their eyes shifted toward her, surprised at the sudden shift in her demeanor.

Kai exchanged a quick look with Jay, his lips curling into a faint smile as he watched Esme. Jay’s stoic expression softened, and before long, the two of them couldn’t hold back any longer. They joined in, their laughter spilling out, as though the weight of the situation had lifted for a moment, leaving only the sheer ridiculousness of it all.

Esme wiped a tear from the corner of her eye as she finally managed to stop laughing, but the amused glint in her eyes didn’t fade. "Can you believe this?" she said, her voice still tinged with laughter. "Do they think we’re fools, or do they truly believe they’re that smart?" Her words were sharp, dripping with sarcasm. "These people, thinking they could pull something like this off and not be noticed..."

Kai chuckled, his earlier tension broken by the absurdity of it all. "If they’re trying to fool us, they’ve got another thing coming."

Jay’s smirk grew wider, the coldness in his eyes replaced by amusement. "It’s almost funny," he muttered, "how they think they could just waltz in with these perfect credentials and expect us to buy it. They’ve clearly underestimated us."

Esme stood there, still smiling, her arms crossed over her chest as she regarded the two men. "Anything else?" she asked, her tone light but with an undercurrent of amusement, clearly enjoying the unfolding situation. She was already well aware that things weren’t as simple as they seemed.

Kai, seeing the amusement in her eyes, knew it was time to drop the next bombshell. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small USB drive, holding it up for Esme to see. "We’ve found something," he said, his voice serious now.
