Chapter 407: [ Volume 1] Chaper 406- Foolish wife.

Standing in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, Ray looked down at the endless stream of cars passing below. The Aron Group’s headquarters was the tallest building in the city, towering over everything except for one—Valhale Group’s skyscraper. From his vantage point on the 40th floor, he could see almost everything, the city stretching out beneath him like a miniature world.

But Ray wasn’t looking at the city. His gaze was locked onto a much smaller building, positioned just across from the Valhale headquarters. His deep blue eyes shimmered faintly, the telltale sign of his power activating. With just a subtle adjustment, his vision sharpened, zooming in on the rooftop where he spotted movement.

There she was.

A girl, surrounded by multiple opponents, fighting with an ease that almost looked effortless. He didn’t need a second glance to recognize her. Of course. His foolish wife.

A scoff left his lips. His arms crossed over his chest as he watched her with a mixture of irritation and reluctant amusement. She really thinks she’s some kind of mastermind. An idiot, that’s what she was.

Ray mouthed the word silently, shaking his head.

He couldn’t, for the life of him, understand how she had survived this long. With the way she acted—so bold, so reckless—even an amateur could track her movements. Yet, there she was, standing in the open, fighting in plain sight, not even bothering to hide.

And despite that, she was still standing.

A muscle in Ray’s jaw tightened. He should be furious. Should be planning to drag her back and knock some sense into her stubborn head.

But instead, he kept watching.

Ray watched as Esme picked up a phone, glanced at it briefly, then threw it to the ground with a casual flick of her wrist. He arched a brow at her recklessness, but before he could roll his eyes, something strange happened.

She turned.

Her golden eyes locked onto his direction, glowing faintly under the rooftop lights. And then, as if she knew he was watching, she raised both hands and made a heart sign.

Ray’s frown deepened. What? This?

His mind immediately rejected the possibility. His power—Eagle Eyes—was flawless. It allowed him to see vast distances with absolute clarity. But Esme? She didn’t have that ability. There was no way she should be able to see him from this far.

Then it hit him.

"Ah... right. She just upgraded her power."

A slow smirk curled at the corner of his lips as he looked at her again, amusement flickering in his sharp blue gaze. Without hesitation, he raised his middle finger in response.

Meanwhile, on the rooftop, Esme stared toward the Aron Group building. The truth was, she couldn’t see him, not the way he could see her. Her powers weren’t like Ray’s. His were sharp, precise—like an eagle, the ruler of the skies, the master of sight. He could pinpoint movement from miles away, track even the smallest shift in the air.

Her power, on the other hand, was different. A white tiger—fast, deadly, unmatched on land. It wasn’t about seeing things clearly from afar. It was about sensing them. Feeling the presence, predicting the movement, knowing without needing to see.

And right now, she knew he was watching her.

A scoff left her lips.

"Maybe this is what they call a connection." 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮

The thought made her cringe. Connection? Ha. No. It was probably just the way Ray was glaring at her with murderous intent.

Ray’s sharp gaze remained locked onto Esme as she bent down, casually picking up her popcorn cup before turning away without a second glance. Just like that—walking off as if nothing had happened.

A slow, irritated smirk tugged at his lips, but his eyelashes twitched with barely restrained frustration.

"This woman..."

If not for the risk of overusing his powers, he would have flown straight to her, grabbed her by the collar, and shaken some sense into that hollow skull of hers. A normal person had a brain—but her? No, hers was probably filled with cow dung.

He let out a long, drawn-out sigh, but to his own annoyance, it was followed by a helpless smile.

No matter how much he scolded her, no matter how infuriating she was, and no matter how others saw him—cold, ruthless, and detached—only he knew the truth.

Only he knew the torment of those endless years.

The nights spent in a hollow silence, drowning in uncertainty. The aching void in his chest that never healed. The unbearable weight of not knowing—was she alive? Was she safe? Would he ever hear that maddening, reckless voice again?

And now, after all that suffering, she was here—alive, breathing, standing right in front of him.

But his smile faded, a flicker of pain shadowing his face. His chest tightened, and before he could stop it, a single tear slipped from the corner of his eye.

"Why?"

Why couldn’t they just live like a normal couple? Why couldn’t they spend their days in peace, raising their children without the constant shadow of danger looming over them? Why had they been born into a life where happiness was a fleeting luxury, where love was a battleground, and survival a never-ending fight?

But then, as he exhaled slowly, a bitter realization settled deep in his heart.

Perhaps, in some twisted way, he was lucky.

Because if not for this life—if not for all the chaos and suffering—he might have never met her. Might have never known what it was like to love someone so fiercely, so completely. Might have never had their children, their family.

Yet, even with all that, his heart still refused to be satisfied.

Just days ago, he thought it would be enough simply to know she was alive. That if he could just see her once, it would be enough.

But now?

Now that he could see her, talk to her, fight with her, breathe the same air as her—it still wasn’t enough.

He wanted more.

He wanted her.

He let out a dry, bitter chuckle, shaking his head at his own foolishness.

"Hah... this stupid heart."
