Chapter 114: Her Husband Is Either Blind or an Idiot

David tilted his head and looked at Tristan Sterling in confusion. "But I don’t think Evelynn is that kind of person. Are you judging her like this just because she has a conflict with your girlfriend?"

Tristan Sterling said, "She’s not even worth my commentary. Just be careful you don’t fall into her trap."

David laughed. "You really have a strong opinion of Evelynn. Don’t be so harsh on a girl. But if I could fall for her, I’d be more than willing."

"I didn’t realize you’d turned into a good guy all of a sudden."

"I’ve always wanted to be a good guy."

Tristan Sterling smiled without a word, then said, "But let me give you a heads-up. She’s not some unmarried, childless woman."

David wasn’t surprised by this. "When I was pursuing Evelynn before, she did say she was married. But I heard her husband is a real piece of work and doesn’t treat her well at all. For a woman as beautiful and charming as Evelynn, her husband is either blind or an idiot."

As David spoke, he was completely oblivious to the man beside him, whose face had darkened.

The reason David knew a little was because of June Jennings. He had met June through Rachel Royce, and when David tried to get some information about Rachel from her, June had vented to him.

"It’s a shame I didn’t meet Evelynn sooner. Maybe then she wouldn’t have had to deal with that scumbag husband of hers. A woman who’s been hurt needs to be protected even more."

As he spoke, he glanced sideways at Tristan Sterling and finally noticed something was wrong with the man’s expression. "Tristan, what’s the matter?"

Tristan Sterling gave him a cold, grim smile and strode away.

David was left completely confused.

Julian Jennings arrived outside Rachel Royce’s room.

Rachel Royce opened the door.

Seeing her pale face, Julian Jennings quickly helped her to the bed to lie down and poured her a glass of warm water. "The doctor will be here soon."

Rachel Royce took the water and drank a sip. She had no strength, her face ashen.

Julian Jennings instinctively reached out and touched her forehead. "You have a fever."

He took the cup from Rachel Royce’s hand. "Just lie down for now."

Soon, the doctor arrived and examined Rachel Royce.

Her temperature was 38.7°C.

The doctor gave Rachel Royce a shot to reduce the fever and prescribed two types of medication.

Julian Jennings had a staff member bring up some millet porridge.

David came to see her.

"How did you suddenly get a fever?"

Rachel Royce said as she drank the millet porridge, "It’s just a minor illness. Nothing to worry about."

After Rachel Royce finished her porridge, Julian Jennings took the bowl from her and said, "Just focus on resting today. Call me if you need anything."

Rachel Royce nodded lightly.

David didn’t disturb her any further either and offered a few words of concern.

Then he followed Julian Jennings out of the room.

Julian Jennings closed the door.

David asked, "Mr. Jennings, has Evelynn been very busy with work lately?"

The two men walked forward side by side.

Julian Jennings replied, "She has been, yes."

David sighed. "Evelynn is still working so hard. A girl doesn’t really need to wear herself out like this."

Julian Jennings said, "This is her own choice. No one can interfere."

David asked again, "Are you and Evelynn here to discuss work this time, Mr. Jennings?"

Julian Jennings hummed in agreement.

"With Evelynn sick, she won’t be able to help you, Mr. Jennings."

"Her health is what’s most important. This is a good chance for her to get some proper rest."

"Can I ask you a question, Mr. Jennings?"

"Go ahead."

"Has Evelynn divorced her husband yet?"

Julian Jennings glanced at David. "Not yet."

David frowned. "Why?"

Julian Jennings answered, "The divorce case hasn’t gone to court yet."

"I see. Then you must have met Evelynn’s husband, Mr. Jennings. What kind of person is he?"

Julian Jennings said with a faint smile, "We probably shouldn’t discuss Evelynn’s private romantic affairs too much."

So David didn’t press the matter.

As the two waited for the elevator to go downstairs,

the elevator doors opened.

Hector Ainsworth stepped out. Seeing Julian Jennings, he said, "President Jennings."

Julian Jennings looked at him. "Are you here to see Evelynn, Director Ainsworth?"

Hector Ainsworth said, "My sister-in-law called me. I want to have a talk with Evelynn."

The sister-in-law he mentioned was Jane Sullivan.

Claire Ainsworth had tearfully complained to her mother this morning, and Jane Sullivan was furious. She had doted on her daughter since she was a child, never willing to scold her even once. Now, she had been bullied by an outsider, and to top it off, Tristan Sterling hadn’t even protected her.

She had called Hector Ainsworth.

Julian Jennings’s handsome face turned cold and grim. "Evelynn isn’t feeling well and is resting right now. If you have something to say, Director Ainsworth, you can say it to me."

Hector Ainsworth noted the man’s attitude and said, "Very well."

Julian Jennings bid David farewell.

Inside the room, after getting the shot and taking her medicine, Rachel Royce lay on the bed to rest, her head groggy. Before she knew it, she had fallen asleep again.

*

Tristan Sterling was on the phone with Suzanne Sullivan. "Hector Ainsworth wants to win over Julian Jennings, and Julian might actually be thinking of getting involved."

Suzanne Sullivan, however, didn’t seem too concerned. "If he can really win over Julian Jennings, then I’ll admit he’s got some real skill."

"But right now, the most important thing is Claire. My mom just called me, and she is furious. How could you not keep a better eye on Claire?"

Tristan Sterling didn’t deny it. "It’s true. I didn’t watch her closely enough."

Suzanne Sullivan said, "Claire has never been wronged a day in her life. This Evelynn is also a headstrong person, and Julian Jennings is very protective of her. Getting her to actually apologize to Claire won’t be easy."

The man’s voice came through, his tone unreadable. "She’s certainly gotten bold now."

Hearing this, Suzanne Sullivan was silent for a moment before speaking. "Harvey Ainsworth and my mom are discussing a visit to the Sterling Family to sound them out. My mom will probably go to Kingsland in a couple of days."

He then let out a laugh and teased, "If you really become my brother-in-law, which side will you be on?"

Tristan Sterling laughed along. "Well, that would be a tricky situation. But if you begged me, or perhaps transferred all your WN shares to me, I might consider taking your side."

"You wish."

Suzanne Sullivan knew very well that Tristan Sterling wouldn’t get involved in his affairs with the Ainsworth Family. Their mutual interests were too deeply entangled.

As long as the Ainsworth Family’s matters remained unresolved, the marriage between Tristan and Claire could not be finalized.

Most importantly, Tristan wasn’t even divorced yet.

As for what Tristan was really thinking deep down, that was his own private affair; Suzanne couldn’t control it, nor did he want to get involved.

"Regardless, I just hope Claire doesn’t get hurt."

Tristan Sterling said, "Got it."

The two didn’t say much else and hung up.

He glanced at the calendar on his phone.

Then he made a call and asked, "When is the court date?"

The person on the other end replied respectfully, "This Friday at ten in the morning."

The day after tomorrow.

...

The next time Rachel Royce woke up, it was already three in the afternoon.

She was covered in sweat when she got up.

She raised a hand to her forehead; it wasn’t as hot anymore. But her head was still a little dizzy, probably from sleeping for so long.

She sat on the bed for a moment to collect herself.

Just then,

the door clicked open.
