The Husband I Loved for Eight Years Never Loved Me-Chapter 91: Car Accident
Chapter 91: The Car Crash
’It seems Tristan Sterling was the one who called off the talks.’
’He must have guessed what I was planning to do.’
’Knowing how vindictive he is, his trip to Athera can’t be for anything good.’
Melissa hadn’t heard a reply from Rachel Royce, and her initial excitement turned to caution. She called out, "Aunt Evelynn."
Rachel Royce snapped back to reality.
’Whatever.’
’If it means I can see my daughter, I’ll put up with it. We’re already competitors, and we’re bound to clash sooner or later. This is just the beginning.’
"Of course Melissa can come see her auntie," Rachel Royce said, her voice exceptionally gentle.
Melissa immediately brightened up. "That’s great! I’ll call Aunt Evelynn after Dad and I get to Athera."
"Okay, sounds good."
She hung up the phone.
Rachel Royce let out a breath.
She put down her phone, changed into workout clothes, and went to the hotel gym.
「The next day.」
At ten in the morning, Rachel Royce was scheduled for a contract signing ceremony with the people from Procare.
At nine o’clock.
Rachel Royce left the hotel on time and headed for Procare.
Marcus Sheldon was driving.
Rachel Royce sat in the back seat, holding some documents and taking a work-related call.
She had just hung up.
The car suddenly lurched.
Rachel Royce looked at Marcus Sheldon and asked, "What’s going on?"
Marcus Sheldon’s expression was tense. He gripped the steering wheel tightly and said, "There’s a problem with the accelerator and the brakes."
The car was about to head onto an overpass. They couldn’t slow down, the brakes had failed, and it was the middle of rush hour.
"Evelynn, hold on tight!" Marcus Sheldon said anxiously.
Rachel Royce quickly reached up and grabbed the handle on the ceiling.
Marcus Sheldon yanked the steering wheel, but the out-of-control vehicle slammed into several other cars.
The road instantly descended into chaos. The sound of blaring horns filled the streets as pedestrians scrambled to get out of the way.
Rachel Royce’s face went deathly pale as she saw they were about to plow onto the sidewalk ahead.
"Look out!!"
Marcus Sheldon gripped the steering wheel, wrenching it hard to the right. The car crashed into a large tree on the side of the road and was forced to a stop.
Screams erupted from the crowd.
Rachel Royce felt an unbearable pain in her head, and then she lost consciousness.
When Rachel Royce groggily regained consciousness, the first thing she smelled was the strong scent of disinfectant.
Her blurry vision gradually cleared, revealing a white ceiling.
She thought she could faintly hear Julian Jennings’s voice.
As she turned to look, she saw the doctor leaving. Julian Jennings walked up to the hospital bed. When he saw Rachel Royce’s eyes were open, his worried expression instantly relaxed. "You’re awake. Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere?"
Rachel Royce looked weakly at Julian Jennings, unable to process anything for a long moment.
"Rachel."
Julian Jennings called out to her.
That brought Rachel Royce back to her senses. She blinked and asked, "What about Marcus Sheldon?"
Julian Jennings said, "Don’t worry, he’s okay. His injuries are just more serious, so he’s still unconscious."
Rachel Royce breathed a sigh of relief and asked, "What’s the situation with Procare?"
Julian Jennings replied, "They know what happened to you. The signing has been postponed."
Rachel Royce nodded. "What time is it now?"
"Four in the afternoon. You were unconscious for seven hours. You have a head injury, but luckily the rest of your body is mostly fine. You’ll need to stay in the hospital for two days of observation, though."
The moment Julian Jennings heard that Rachel Royce had been in a car accident, he dropped all his work and rushed over immediately.
Rachel Royce tried to sit up.
Julian Jennings adjusted the hospital bed so she could lean back comfortably. Rachel Royce’s head was wrapped in gauze, and she still felt dizzy.
Julian Jennings poured her a glass of water.
Julian Jennings had already arranged for a lawyer to handle the aftermath of the accident. They would pay whatever compensation was necessary. Some people were injured, but thankfully, no one died.
"The car has been taken in for inspection. It’s confirmed there was a problem with the brakes and the accelerator. The police are already investigating."
Rachel Royce drank some water and placed the glass on the bedside cabinet.
’It’s not hard to guess who might have a reason to harm me, but I’ll have to wait for the results of the police investigation.’
Just then, there was a knock at the door.
"Come in," Julian Jennings said.
Leo Howard pushed the door open, walked into the room, and said respectfully, "President Jennings, Evelynn."
To others, Leo Howard was Victor Yates’s protégé, but in reality, he was a mole Julian Jennings had planted by Victor Yates’s side.
Julian Jennings had long suspected Victor Yates but never had solid proof. So, for years, he had turned a blind eye to the things Victor Yates did behind the scenes to harm the company’s interests.
Victor Yates had always thought his actions were seamless.
Leo Howard had been the one to secretly report Victor Yates’s recent activities to Rachel Royce, including his meeting with someone from Cedarwood.
Julian Jennings asked, "What’s the situation with Victor Yates?"
Leo Howard replied, "He originally had a dinner meeting with Dylan Young tonight, but I heard that President Sterling from Cedarwood is coming to Athera today, so the dinner was canceled."
Just then, a phone began to vibrate.
It was Rachel Royce’s phone.
Her purse was on the sofa.
Julian Jennings walked over, took the phone out for her, and handed it to her after seeing the caller ID.
Rachel Royce looked at the phone. It was a call from Melissa, using her watch phone.
She composed herself and pressed the answer button.
Julian Jennings left the room with Leo Howard to talk outside, so as not to disturb her.
Melissa’s anxious voice came through the phone. "Aunt Evelynn."
"Melissa, what’s wrong?"
Although she tried her best to make her voice sound normal, her weakness was still undeniable.
"Daddy said Aunt Evelynn is hurt. Aunt Evelynn, are you in the hospital right now?"
Rachel Royce was taken aback for a moment.
’But it’s not surprising that the people at Cedarwood know I’m injured.’
"Auntie is fine, Melissa. You don’t need to worry."
"Daddy and I are already in Athera. I want to come see Aunt Evelynn."
Hearing the worry in her daughter’s voice, Rachel Royce couldn’t bring herself to refuse. Seeing the sign in her hospital room, she gave Melissa the address.
She hung up.
A little while later, Julian Jennings came back in. "Your daughter knows you’re in Athera?"
Rachel Royce hummed in agreement. "Melissa has been in touch with me a lot recently."
"Melissa really does like you."
Rachel Royce smiled, gratified.
"Oh, right. About the contract with Procare—Professor, you should hurry and take care of it. With Tristan Sterling here, I’m worried something might go wrong with the signing."
As long as the contract wasn’t signed, there was always an unpredictable risk. The fact that Tristan Sterling had come to Athera personally made Rachel Royce deeply worried.
Julian Jennings nodded. "I know."
The two of them talked for a little longer.
Julian Jennings didn’t want to disturb her any further. "I’ve arranged for a caregiver to look after you. I’ll be back tonight. Call me if you need anything."
"Okay."
Julian Jennings turned and left the hospital room.
「About ten minutes later.」
Rachel Royce heard footsteps outside the door, followed by a knock.
"Come in."
The door to the room opened.
The first thing Rachel Royce saw was the tall, upright figure of a man. Then, a tiny figure darted into the room from beside his legs.
"Aunt Evelynn!"
Melissa ran to Rachel Royce’s bedside. She was wearing a beautiful little dress with a belt made of pearls, a small pink diamond necklace, and her little backpack.
She looked at the gauze wrapped around Rachel Royce’s forehead with a worried expression and said, "Aunt Evelynn, does it hurt? Do you want Melissa to blow on it for you?"
Looking at her daughter, Rachel Royce felt that even if her head was throbbing, the pain was gone now. She reached out, stroking Melissa’s little head, and comforted her gently, "Auntie doesn’t hurt. Don’t worry, Melissa. Auntie will be all better soon."
Melissa said, "Oh."
She turned to look at her father, walked over, and took the bag he was holding. "Daddy, give it to me."
Rachel Royce glanced at the man standing at the foot of the bed. Tristan Sterling was looking at her, his handsome face calm and composed.
Their eyes met for a moment before Rachel Royce coolly looked away.
