The Informal Tomb Raiding Diary: She is the occupant of the tomb!-Chapter 292 - 264: The Frightened Bugs in Tears (Part 2)
Wen Jing swallowed hard. I think they know very well that the weapons in their hands now are absolutely useless against these insects.
The person who released the insects had no intention of sparing Zhaosi; they wanted her dead.
Seeing the swarm of insects rushing towards us, Baozi grabbed me tight. She didn’t cry or scream, but by this action, it seemed like she wanted to die with me.
"Get out of the way!" Zhaosi burst out from the inner room, holding a giant insect in her arms.
The insect struggled and squirmed in her arms, letting out a whimpering sound, as if extremely frightened.
The insect was snow white, somewhat resembling a silkworm, only much fatter, a meter long, and as for its circumference... anyway, Zhaosi had some trouble holding it with both arms encircling it.
"Ah—" Baozi didn’t scream when seeing insects that could devour bronze and stone quickly, but let out a piercing scream upon seeing this giant white insect, burying her face into my shoulder, refusing to lift her head.
"Don’t be afraid, it doesn’t bite. Behold my tomb-guarding treasure!" Zhaosi stood before the insect swarm with the giant white bug, which whimpered, and sure enough, the dark swarm of insects halted, paused for a few seconds, then turned around and retreated.
"Can you stop it from making those dying whimpers?" I said, somewhat annoyed.
"Every time I hold it, it makes this noise, I can’t help it. Why don’t you try?" Zhaosi stepped towards me.
I wasn’t afraid, but Baozi couldn’t take it, clutching me and stepping back, directly driven to tears.
"What kind of insect is this? Why are those insects afraid of it?" Wen Jing’s eyes showed no fear, only curiosity as he examined the giant white insect closely from all angles.
"I don’t know. When I arrived, it was lying on the tomb owner’s coffin lid; the tomb had many skeletons, attracting many poisonous and strange insects, but they didn’t dare approach the coffin. It’s not the tomb owner that’s frightening; it should be it that those insects fear."
"Is there no information about it in the murals?" I tilted my head to look at the giant white insect’s head. Unlike other soft-bodied insects, its head and tail were distinctly different, and interestingly, it had two small ears on top of its head, with eyes like two black beans, shiny and glistening.
The teary eyes were understandable because, for the first time, I saw an insect cry with two lines of tears falling.
"No, maybe it crawled in by itself after the ancient tomb was built."
"Alright, put it back then, it’s such a pitiable creature."
"Let’s see what their next move is; if it’s not insects, I’ll put it back. It likes the tomb owner’s coffin."
Earlier, when Zhaosi was telling a story to Baozi, she mentioned the tomb owner’s coffin. Coffins of ancient people are elaborate, and coffins made from certain materials are incredibly rare.
The coffin woods people are familiar with are from trees existing in that era, while the rarest are from trees that have become extinct.
This tomb owner had poor character when alive, yet struck incredible luck, obtaining a piece of the Divine Wood during his reign.
Someone dug a well and unearthed a piece of dead wood, long buried, without roots or crown. But once unearthed, the dead wood came back to life and sprouted new shoots.
This matter was reported to the Monarch, and the wood was transported back to the capital to be made into a coffin.
Zhaosi learned about this from the murals in the tomb passage. The painting had no annotations, but the thoughts of ancients weren’t always hard to guess.
Maybe they believed the wood had regenerative powers, and by placing someone inside, perhaps a new body would grow.
No matter how brutal the Monarch was, he had a loyal group of followers who fulfilled his wish by burying him inside the coffin after death.
Unfortunately, not only did a new body not grow, but Zhaosi dressed him up as a Western Regions mummy and sold him.
The giant white insect doesn’t protect the tomb owner; it simply likes that particular type of wood. So, after the tomb owner was sold, the coffin became Zhaosi’s insect-raising box.
She raised the white bug for over a hundred years or, you could say, ’cohabited’ for a hundred years, yet the white bug still saw her as a menace.
Wen Jing was very interested in the white bug and voluntarily offered to hold it. Zhaosi handed the insect to him, reminding him to hold it properly and not let it escape, as once this guy hits the ground, it runs as fast as if wearing rollerblades, making it hard to catch.
However, the giant white insect was unexpectedly calm in Wen Jing’s hands, not attempting to escape or making a fuss.
Zhaosi looked surprised. I didn’t find it strange. This insect might be highly intelligent, and usually, such small animals are wary and terrified of me, like the stray cats I scare away. Naturally, Zhaosi, the big bad wolf, wouldn’t be much better than I am.
"Someone’s coming down." Shunfeng squatted by the door, peering through a hole in the door, listening to the sounds outside.
