The Informal Tomb Raiding Diary: She is the occupant of the tomb!-Chapter 339 - 280: The Empty Coffin
Cheng Xuelin considered himself to have met an expert, his emotions clearly a bit excited. While he had been quite calm when categorizing department staff for me earlier, now his tone escalated by nearly two degrees, beginning to explain weapon knowledge.
The weapons he talked about were for field missions because weapons are controlled in many places; conventional weapons are not the first choice for frontline field operatives. Experts like Qinghan and Lilith almost never carry guns.
When Qinghan uses a dagger, it’s quite frequent, and the treasure sword I gave him is used with great ease; it’s clear that he has specifically learned and frequently used cold weapons before.
Cheng Xuelin hesitated before asking, "Captain, you can identify and avoid traps and can instantly kill those monsters, why... don’t you prove to Old Zhao and the others that you have the capability to lead a team?"
After walking through that wide passageway and ascending another set of stairs, we weren’t far from the main tomb chamber.
"I’m here to rescue people, no need to prove anything, and too many people might just get in the way."
"Ah, indeed the thought process of the strong differs from us ordinary people. Rest assured, I won’t cause any trouble for you, and I’ll completely follow your commands during the operation!"
"What you just did was very good, there are traps both front and back in the corridor; if you run around recklessly, you would have died horribly."
"Having been on special missions outside for many years, I have at least this self-awareness. As long as I don’t move around recklessly, others won’t be implicated."
When Cheng Xuelin said this, there was a bit of helplessness and bitterness in his smile, likely because he had caused trouble before or let down teammates.
Sometimes learning a lesson or understanding a principle comes at a bloody cost, which can be severe, even involving one’s or others’ lives.
Just as he finished speaking, a problem blocked our path: only half of the upward staircase remained, and beyond was no path to take.
The main tomb chamber hung above us, about three hundred meters away. Below was a deep, dark well, where falling would guarantee death.
The grappling hook we brought couldn’t reach that far. Cheng Xuelin looked at me and asked what to do, whether to go back and find Liang Ruidong for help.
"Professor Chen and the others aren’t here, maybe we really found the wrong place."
The so-called main tomb chamber was a small wooden house, beneath which lay two horizontal chains. The two ends of the chains were embedded in the walls on either side midway up the pyramid.
The wooden house couldn’t fit seven or eight people; it should count as a casket outside the coffin, a coffin set.
"Since we’re here, of course, we have to go up and take a look."
"But how do we get up there?" 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
"Walk the chain."
"Ah? No, no, I can’t do it!"
"Can’t walk, then climb."
"My arms have no strength; I can’t hold on. I can’t handle such physical challenges."
"Can you see the words outside the house?" I asked.
The exterior of the wooden house was painted in gold, with hieroglyphics from Ancient Nile Country on it. But the distance was too far; I could only see squiggles without recognizing any word clearly.
"Words? I can’t see anything, Captain, what kind of immortal eyesight do you have?" Cheng Xuelin adjusted his glasses.
"Never mind, I’ll go up myself to explore the path."
Cheng Xuelin said he couldn’t do it, so I couldn’t let him take the risk. The chains may be thick, but to walk and climb on them requires balance and arm strength, and having neither would mean a fatal fall with no resurrection armor.
Among the equipment I carried was a ’Gecko Claw’ that Bai Yun gave me last time. I put on the claws and climbed up the wall to the chain’s fixed point, then jumped onto the chains, ran toward the wooden house at great speed.
The wooden house had a door but no windows. I climbed onto the roof, flashed my flashlight down a few times, indicating to Cheng Xuelin that everything was normal.
Then I took out my phone and captured all the drawings and writings on the wooden house.
After snapping away, I planned to go inside for a look. Now it seemed there was no one inside; otherwise, the swaying chain, along with the sound of me moving on the roof, would surely have alerted anyone inside.
I crawled like a gecko to the front door and realized it was a sliding door. I gripped the handle, slid it to the sides, and the door opened.
There was nothing else inside, just a coffin in the middle of the floor, also made of wood and painted with gold.
This coffin was about the size of a one and a half meter double bed, and the coffin lid was open.
I took out my phone and photographed the coffin intensively; there were words on it too, likely more significant than the ones outside.
I approached the coffin, glanced inside, and found it was empty.
After thoroughly checking the inside and outside of the coffin, I returned to the doorway to examine the door bottom and the inside handle, finding dust and fingerprints.
Someone had opened the door from the outside; there were no pry marks around the coffin lid, indicating it was pushed open from the inside.
