Chapter 1606: Beside the Culprit

"Yes, Lord Rex and Princess Davina are departing today, my lady."

On the corner of the room, the servant clutched the pendant of her necklace and put it close to her lips.

She was talking to someone.

"He also told me to give a scroll to Mira of the Ravencort House. But I don’t know what the content is." She stole a glance at the scroll in her other hand. "What...? You want me to open it? But my lady, that could jeopardize my position here. I don’t know if there was a layer that I might break if I open it."

A troubled frown donned on the servant’s face.

An order was given, but she didn’t know if it was a good idea to listen to it.

Eventually, she let out a shaky breath and opened the scroll.

It was then that the servant sucked in a cold breath.

"L-Lady... It has a royal seal," Her hands trembled, "the Empress’ seal..."

Gulping harshly, the servant dared herself to read the content of such a valuable letter, knowing that she would be executed if this were known by anyone. "I think it’s a mission, a report sent by someone called Rick. I think Lord Rex and Princess Davina are doing a mission together to help the Empress."

Meanwhile, across the empire’s territory.

House of Aurelius mainland, Rontera.

A blonde woman in a regal violet dress was sitting at a dressing table, staring at her own reflection.

She was beautiful, nobody would say otherwise, but she’s not perfect.

A scar could be seen at the corner of her lips, but it wasn’t the kind of imperfection she was thinking.

But imperfection in every aspect of a person.

Not perfect in her appearance, not her background, and certainly not herself.

April.

Her necklace was glowing subtly, and from it she could hear the sound of another woman—the servant.

Once the necklace dimmed and the connection was severed, she looked out of the window.

"Empress Morgana sought Rex’s help? Why?" She thought aloud, finding it odd for the Empress to give such a great task to someone whom she didn’t even know personally. "I know he now has Duke Lorcan by his side, but there are better and more trustworthy candidates than Rex. Even if she didn’t want this role to be in someone who was a part of the royal bubble, there are still others..."

"She’s in a dire situation, and she somehow trusted Rex? I can’t trust her." April shook her head.

No matter how hard she tries to justify this move, it doesn’t make sense.

Empress Morgana wouldn’t give this task to a nobody like Rex, a new knight with an unknown origin.

In fact, she should’ve black listed Rex since he might as well be a trap set by her enemies.

"Mira...? Rex is practically with the family all the time, when did he meet with Mira?" April continued, mind reeling with clouds of confusion at what the servant reported. "He went somewhere with Viora and Amanir after the Forsaken Tower, maybe then? What is his relationship with her? How is he asking for her help when my house is a lot stronger than hers?"

April looked down at the table, her forehead creased in confusion.

The House of Aurelius is a lot stronger than the House of Ravencort, so this was a surprise for her.

In terms of aid, she could provide a lot more than Mira could.

"Is it because the Great Elder wasn’t willing to do more after this favor? Or was it because, unlike Mira, I have a lot of siblings, so I can’t command as much from the family?" April’s frown deepened as one thought came to mind, the worst one. "Or was it because Princess Davina told him to stay away from me?"

Back in the ceremony, Rex and April were caught being too close by Princess Liliana.

At this point, Princess Davina must’ve already been aware of their hidden relationship.

"Must be... No, I’m certain. Princess Davina must’ve told him to stay away from me—so he can’t ask for my help," April clenched her fists hard, face darkening rapidly, but there was still great fire behind her eyes. "She’s underestimating me."

April gritted her teeth and stood up, heading out of her room with purpose.

"If it’s war you want, then I’ll gladly give it. Don’t think I’m going to sit here and let you dictate his freedom."

...

Back in the Duke’s temple, Rex went around the open corridor until he reached Princess Davina’s room.

Syla was standing outside the room along with several more servants, seemingly in wait.

All of them turned when they saw Rex approaching.

"Lord Rex," She bowed deeply. "Should I inform the princess of your arrival?"

"Is she changing?" Rex raised a brow and looked at the window.

"No, she was ready long before you arrived," Syla answered, her head still bowed. "A few reports came in just minutes ago, and she ordered us to give her silence while she worked. She’s been postponing her duties because of... you, but she can’t delay them any longer."

Rex nodded in understanding.

Even though she seemed to be free recently, she has her own territory to manage.

One that requires her full focus, which she couldn’t give because of him.

From the Nameless Dragon Arena and all the other things he needed to do.

"Leave us," Rex waved his hand.

Hearing this, Syla and the other servants bowed again and turned around to leave.

Rex knocked on the door before sliding it open.

He stepped inside and found that the layout was almost identical to his room, and Princess Davina was sitting on the sofa with a few scrolls scattered in front of her. All of them seemed to be important as she even had her seal stamp ready on the table.

Just like Rex, she was wearing light armor with almost the exact same design.

A few stark differences are that both her arms are covered by thicker vambraces and she has a hood.

Other than that, it was practically the same.

Princess Davina looked up from the scrolls briefly.

Once she realized that it was Rex, she went back to the scrolls again.

"You look more fitting as a knight in that."

Rex didn’t answer and walked over to her, sitting on the sofa to her left, without asking for permission.

He was silent for a second, thinking about something.

"What is it? If you have something to say to me, then say it."

"I’m going to wait for you to finish."

Hearing this, Princess Davina exhaled lightly and placed down the scroll to focus on Rex.

"What is it?" She asked again, crossing her legs with graceful ease. "Esmeravon is being fed right now. She’ll be ready in about ten minutes or so. We’ll arrive a day earlier than the other knights, so there’s nothing to worry about. I’ve already taken care of everything."

Rex shook his head—that wasn’t the reason he came here.

He then gestured at the scroll that Princess Davina was holding earlier with his chin and eyes.

"What are you reading?"

"You won’t know what I’m talking about."

"Try me."

Princess Davina’s eyes narrowed for a second before she grabbed the scroll again.

She then handed it over to Rex.

"It’s about the Arcalen House that was mysteriously destroyed and its people slaughtered. I’ve taken the liberty to deal with this matter myself since I was nearby in Noctem Vale," She explained the brief situation. "There are rumors talking about a civil war between than house and the new house that turned on the main house. Then suddenly, both of them were destroyed."

Rex’s heart skipped a beat when he heard this.

He was not expecting to find this at all, but he tried to remain composed.

Davina was the one with Mira back then...? She decided to tackle this matter herself?

Rex felt his throat going dry.

Even though he managed to turn Mira into one of his own, he forgot that there was someone else with her back then, so he wasn’t in the clear yet. Even though he left no trace at all, at least not that he knows of, there’s still a chance of him being caught.

Mira’s power showed that he can be traced.

It’s not impossible.

And since Princess Davina was the one tackling this problem, it’s going to be more likely.

Of all people, it had to be her. Then again, she was nearby at the time, and I saw her fighting that dragon snake. She must have sensed the death of the Arcalen House’s Obelisk of Life. That’s probably why she showed up with Mira in the first place. Shit... I can’t have this looming over me.

Rex cursed Princess Davina and her narcissistic behavior.

She could let others take care of it, but she has to insist on being the one in the spotlight.

Now their relationship dynamic changed again from a temporary partnership to a fragile partnership.

As soon as Princess Davina learned he was the one who slaughtered the Arcalen House, along with its surroundings, she would undoubtedly turn against him, regardless of him—being her fiancé. Cold as she might seem, her sense of justice for her people ran deep.

Rex could feel it radiating from her.

No chance that he could reason with her when she knew the truth.

Looking down at the letter, Rex’s eyes flickered.

It’s from Mira...?

Immediately, Rex read through the content to see if Mira mentioned anything.

At this moment, he wasn’t strong enough to be her Alpha, and he worried that she might betray him.

Even though it’s unlikely, he has to make sure.

Fortunately, Mira didn’t say anything about him, only saying that she still has to investigate further.

"Don’t fret on it too much, you don’t even know the Arcalen House."

Princess Davina’s voice snapped him out of his daze.

She was amused slightly at how serious Rex looked while he was reading that scroll, ’I’ve only shown him that one since it’s the least complicated thing I have on my plate, but look at him. Is he really trying to analyze it?’

For a second there, Rex contemplated how he should approach this.

He was oblivious to what Princess Davina was thinking.

"The Arcalen House... I’ve heard of it before since I’ve gone to Arbitgea, so I’m not that clueless." He placed the scroll down on the table. "So, who do you think did it? Do you have a clue as to who it could be?"

"Who knows? My guess is that it’s someone from the inside," Princess Davina shrugged.

Hearing this, Rex let out a breath of relief.

At least she still doesn’t know anything about that slaughter.

I must keep her that way, but I can’t be obvious about it.

Just then, Princess Davina’s eyes flickered as she remembered something.

"Oh, I remember there’s one survivor of that slaughter, a man, and he kept repeating these two names. He kept repeating the names Selvaris and Rex," She said, only now recalling this. "Selvaris is the only female heir of the Arcalen House, while Re-"

Princess Davina paused, her eyes widening a bit.

"Oh, wait, isn’t Rex your name?" She turned to Rex, eyebrows raised in surprise.

Rex cursed inside as what he did had come to haunt him. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

Eiran... I kept him alive since he’s the only one who was good to me, but now that has become a problem.

Even though his heart was pounding, Rex shrugged and stood up.

"I’m not the only one with the name ’Rex’." He walked away, heading for the door. "Oh, right, I came here to tell you that you shouldn’t be near me when I’m dealing with the knights. And if you can, change your armor. We’re matching, and it’d look bad."

"Matching armor displayed unity and strength, how does it look bad?"

"The knights are going to look down on me. They would say that I’m only relevant because of you, and that’ll give me more trouble. So, a request of mine, change it or at least cover it with something. I need them to respect me."

"I see... Then, in that case, I’ll deal with it."

"Thank you."
