The King's Unbreakable Wife-Chapter 182: Sneaking around (1)
Chapter 182: Sneaking around (1)
An hour after dinner, Hazel returned to her bedroom accompanied by Tobias. The maids and guards were behind them in case they needed something or for protection.
Tonight they would be going back to sleeping in separate rooms as according to the court, it was not the set day where someone believed the chance of getting pregnant was high.
"I would like to go back in the past and strangle the relative who thought it made sense for the king not to share a room with his wife. I should also talk with the kings that followed as none tried to change this. Not even my brute of a father," Tobias muttered, thinking this was his father’s plan to punish him all along.
"Well, what if the past kings and queens liked it? You only know about your parents and grandparents maybe, but you don’t know what the relationship was like for the others. What if they hated the sight of each other and preferred separate rooms? It is known that kings would take women into their rooms," said Hazel.
Hazel wouldn’t want to be present for that so it was best to have their own rooms.
"Then it should have been a choice for those who wanted to be together to have one room and those who didn’t sleep away from each other. The palace is a messed up place," said Tobias.
"It is," Hazel agreed. "It’s a surprise that you are so sane. Perhaps it’s from you always wanting to run away."
"It’s not that. I’ve always seen through the mess here which is why I normally got in trouble. I’ve built bad relationships with men in the court since I was young. Speaking of the court, I’ve managed to get rid of one member who doesn’t deserve his position and a new man will be coming in tomorrow. Forgive me for almost being late to dinner," Tobias requested.
"You weren’t late to dinner. I was just a bit annoyed they were going to serve me as if they knew you were not going to show. On nights that you are busy and must complete work, if you are alone please call for me to join you. Or at least send someone to tell me you cannot attend," Hazel said as she would like to avoid looking confused in front of the maids.
"Better than that, I will be present at every dinner. It was only because I was trying to do a lot of things- Why are you squeezing my hand?" Tobias questioned, trying to free his hand from her grip.
"I told you not to try doing everything in one day just so you can be with me. You were busy because you gave yourself so much work to do today. I swear, Tobias. I am going to hurt you like you’ve never been hurt before if you do this again. I shall see you at some point throughout the day so don’t do this again," Hazel warned.
It would never please Hazel to know that the cost of him seeing her was Tobias doing too much work.
"It’s my body. I am the one who knows when I am pushing myself too far-"
"Do not come to me," Hazel said, letting go of his hand to go to her room alone. She frowned, annoyed even more by the sight of the doctor waiting outside her door. "Where is the person who sent you to me today? I gave you a simple order."
"It was a simple order but they are quite busy with their duties," Arlo answered.
"No one should be too busy to meet with the queen. Should you fail to bring them tomorrow then you shall lose your position of aiding me and maybe your spot as palace doctor. How can you serve me when you can’t do something so simple?" Hazel asked.
Arlo looked to Tobias for help to stop the queen.
"Do as she says," Tobias said, standing by Hazel’s order. He was already on thin ice and should he disagree with her now, he would be falling into cold water. "Hurry with what you are here for so the queen can go to bed. I will be joining in drinking what you prepared."
"King Tobias, it is only for the queen to do. You may leave us," Arlo said as he had nothing for Tobias. He was only sent to look after the queen. Why would the king want to be present?
"I will drink whatever you are offering the queen and you will too. Should something ever happen to the queen, I shall bring all members of your family to see you hang. Understood?" Tobias asked.
Arlo suddenly felt hot. He was already aware that if something went wrong with the queen, he would be the first person blamed and killed for it. "Nothing will happen to the queen under my watch. I truly wish to help the queen have an heir. I won’t be long so the queen may retire."
Hazel wished she could skip having to drink medicine. She reluctantly entered the door opened for her and went to a chair at the table in the room to sit down. She regretted telling Tobias about her dislike for medicine as he would not stop grinning.
Tobias watched the doctor, making note of everything he saw in his head. He had the thought of bringing a pregnant woman here to drink what the doctor was giving Hazel but knew Hazel would be against it.
Should another woman lose her child from something meant for Hazel, Tobias might never be forgiven, but his thoughts were filled with keeping Hazel safe.
Tobias would like to argue how it was any different than having the taste testers for their food.
"It has a bitter taste at first, but I am told by women that once you get used to it, you don’t taste the bitterness anymore. King Tobias," Arlo offered a small amount to Tobias.
Tobias took the spoon from the doctor. "Leave the bottle you brought with you here. The queen can take this amount in the morning and at night by herself."
"She can, but it is better that I am here to question if there was any change in how she felt throughout the day and look for any signs of her being with child. It is my job to come to her morning and night," Arlo replied, refusing to let the queen do this herself. What if she were to not drink it?
"If the bottle is here, I can worry less about it being tampered with. You should prefer it to be here as it means less of a chance for you to lose your life. No, drink," Tobias said, waiting for the doctor to sip it first before Hazel would.
Arlo drank it in one go. He didn’t mind the king’s suspicions as he had heard of all the evil things to happen here. Arlo knew that in time they would see that he was not here to hurt the queen. He was not the kind of man to be influenced by anyone. He only wanted to use his talents to help others.
Seeing the doctor drink it so fast, Hazel thought the taste couldn’t be so bad and brought the spoon to her lips to drink. She instantly regretted it but swallowed it. Hazel watched as Tobias drank it with no reaction to the foul taste.
"That is all. My visits will have more tests in the coming weeks when you should be pregnant. Excuse me," Arlo said, moving quickly to pack his things while leaving the small bottle for Hazel.
"You must also leave," Hazel said to Tobias.
"Right," Tobias replied, grinning ear to ear as he was going to make a quick run to her window.
