Chapter 308: Convincing (2)

"What do you see in that man?" Phillip asked as he was still trying to figure out what attracted Annalise to Rafael.

"I am not going to answer that since no matter what I say you won’t think that Rafael is good for me. Aside from the fact he is a knight, shouldn’t you be happy I have finally found someone I want to be with? Wasn’t that a concern you and mother had for me?" Annalise asked, watching as their army went back toward the trees.

"I wanted you to settle down with one of our own. Not someone from the other side and worst of all, you went and got yourself involved with that man’s son. You did this just to upset me, didn’t you?" Phillip questioned, knowing Annalise would be cruel enough to do something like this.

Phillip didn’t see it as a mere coincidence that Annalise came to like River’s son.

"Father, I wouldn’t waste my time with a man because I am upset with you or I want to make you upset. My feelings for Rafael have nothing to do with anyone but us. I would appreciate it if you didn’t speak like he isn’t handsome," said Annalise, knowing that was what her father meant with his earlier question. "Must you be so petty to deny his looks?"

Phillip thought differently and muttered, "He isn’t. I’ve seen many good-looking men back home that would be much better suited for you."

"Father, I swear if you won’t stop trying to sway me from being with him, I will not speak to you. Do you want me to run away again?" Annalise asked, turning to her father.

She couldn’t be happier when she was reunited with her horse and did not have to ride with her father. Annalise was close to riding off and leaving Phillip behind to talk to himself.

"I am only trying to understand why him and not anyone else at home. What made you look at him and think he is the one? I am trying to make sense of your relationship since you failed to inform me that you were more than just his maid. Did he touch you?" Phillip asked, gripping the reins as he awaited the answer.

"I touched him! Honestly, I would rather talk about this with my mother than you. Ask me anything you want as long as it doesn’t have to do with touching. Oh, but first, tell me who told you about Rafael," Annalise said, now remembering that she had to catch who betrayed her.

Phillip shrugged his shoulders. "I don’t know since there wasn’t a name on the message, but I am grateful there is someone around who doesn’t want to keep me in the dark like my daughter, wife, and mother. All the women in my life are not telling me everything."

"This would not be the first time. It would be best that you understand quickly that there are things I can talk to with my mother or grandmother that I just cannot tell you. It is weird and you have a temper sometimes which was shown by you riding out and wounding him. Had something bad happened to him, I would not forgive you," said Annalise. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com

They were lucky that her father had not done a lot of damage to Rafael. She had to worry about how Beatrice and River would take their son being attacked by her father. It would make one awkward dinner with the two families meeting.

"Father, I understand why you are angry. Believe me, I do. Given the history, it is normal for you to react that way when finding out about us and then there was the fact I didn’t tell you. However, now I am telling you that my relationship with him isn’t what you think," Annalise said, hoping that he would listen to her now rather than think the worst.

If she could convince her father to accept Rafael or at least spend some time with him to see the type of person Rafael was, it would be a good start to getting her people to welcome Rafael.

Annalise didn’t trust the guards placed at the border, but she did trust the knights. She wanted to show that not everyone was heartless. There was already an example of that by Christian ordering the knights to not attack after her name was said.

When her father caught her up on what happened after she left, she could not believe that her name alone had stopped a bigger fight from happening.

"I am not being used. He loved me well before he knew who I was. He has always been respectful and does not try to force himself on me. Besides, I am the one most likely to pin him down-"

"Annalise," Phillip warned. He didn’t want to hear that coming from his daughter.

"You started it. He is a good man, father. Once you stop being so angry, you will see that he is good for me. I have never felt this way for anyone so I would really appreciate it if you do not try to chase him away. Regardless of what you think, I will be with Rafael. Grandmother already likes him," Annalise said.

"Of course she does," Phillip replied, knowing his mother enjoyed every bit of this. "She has always pushed for you to marry someone from that side. She once proposed that we send a message that there could be peace if you married the prince. Now she’s all for a knight. Tell me, how will this work? You are to replace me, Annalise."

Annalise frowned as she had not thought that far ahead. She was more focused on getting Rafael to forgive her. "We will figure it out in the future. I will still carry out my duty as a leader in the future. There’s plenty of time for Rafael to fit in all of that. What’s important now is you give him a chance. Will you?"

Phillip sighed, feeling like he was being backed into a corner. He couldn’t suddenly disregard his thoughts about the knights or guards and welcome one into his family, but at the same time, he didn’t want to push his daughter away. Whatever decision he made, he was going to be hearing complaints.

A knight as Annalise’s partner won’t sit well with many at home, but he only had one child and he wanted her to be happy.

"I don’t like him for you, but if this is what you want, I won’t try to pull you away from him. Unless I see that you are being hurt by him," Phillip quickly added. If for any reason he saw tears in her eyes and it had something to do with Rafael, he was going to finish off killing Rafael. "I will try to convince the others to accept this though it will be hard."

Annalise was happy to hear her father was giving Rafael a chance even if it was a small one. "Thank you. I would also like it if you don’t glare at him when he is around and you should apologise for injuring him. You know that it was wrong of you to attack him when he was not looking and he was trying to help us."

Phillip muttered a few curses under his breath. Wasn’t it enough that he wasn’t trying to kill Rafael anymore? It already took a lot of strength to say that he was willing to accept their relationship. Having to say sorry would kill him.

"It is the right thing to do and you know it. You can grumble about it on our way back home to tell mother what happened. As of right now, Rafael isn’t going anywhere in my life so get used to playing nice with him," Annalise advised her father.
