The Lady's Butler: I Reincarnated To Serve The Villainess-Chapter 27: Lady Renelle Loves Cute Things [Bonus - ]
"Who the hell are you?"
Renelle’s expression was completely calm as she pressed the ice dagger on Adrian’s neck.
If the answer that came out his mouth was unsatisfactory, then she’d just slit his throat, killing two birds with one stone.
Killing him would remove the anomaly that didn’t exist in her previous life, and also, she might be able to get rid of whatever she was feeling right now.
Adrian knew from the look in her eyes that she wouldn’t hesitate to stab him, it was the same look her Villainess self had.
But even through that, only one thought crossed his mind,
"Strawberry?" Unconsciously, he voiced out his thoughts.
"Huh?" Renelle questioned, not quite understanding what he meant even when her brain replayed his words.
’Strawberry?’ she thought to herself, ’is that code for something?’
"You smell like strawberries," Adrian clarified, seeing the confused look on her face.
"...."
Renelle froze for a few seconds, her brain repeating the words slowly before it fully registered and her face immediately went red.
She suddenly noticed how close they were, hell, one of her legs were to his side as she pressed the dagger to his neck, and anyone who saw this would definitely get the wrong idea.
Still, she was determined to get her answers....even if she had to do so in an embarrassing position.
"I won’t ask again," she tried to regain her composure as she pressed the ice dagger harder on his neck, creating a small cut on him.
Adrian had a small smile on his face as he watched a myriad of expressions appear on her face before it finally settled into a cold one.
He wasn’t sure of it before, but now he was certain, his Renelle was having some sort of reaction to him.
He wasn’t sure if that was a good thing just yet.
"As I already said in the ballroom," he started, "I’m your Butler."
"I don’t remember having a—" she stopped herself as she continued looking at him with a frown, though his face held an annoying smile.
She didn’t remember having a butler in her previous life, so what was this change.
Renelle almost didn’t believe his words, but then she suddenly recalled that she had received a letter two days ago informing of a new servant arriving.
But she had been so distracted with trying to get the prince to ask her out on a date that she had basically ignored it.
With a sigh, she let the ice dagger disappear before pulling back and saying, "you must have a letter from my father proving your identity."
"Right," Adrian nodded and moved his hand to the side, letting it sink in the shadows before he pulled it out again, retrieving the academy recommendation letter the patriarch had given him before handing it over, "here."
Renelle accepted the letter and sure enough, her father’s sigil was on it, causing her fingers to tremble a bit.
She wasn’t worried that he might’ve forged it, no, instead she was lost in the memory of her past....or was it future at this point.
"I see," she said as she handed the letter back to him, "then I apologize for my behavior earlier."
Adrian accepted the letter and sent it back to his [Shadow Vault] before turning back to Renelle, noticing the look on her face.
’Noctis,’ he mentally called out to the cat that was being lazy in the [Shadow Vault].
«What is it?» Noctis asked, sounding a bit too bored.
"I apologize in advance for this."
«Huh?»
Before the cat could understand what he meant by those words, it was suddenly summoned from the vault and into Adrian’s hands.
"I heard the Lady was interested in cats," Adrian spoke up, pulling Renelle’s attention towards him and Noctis who still seemed a bit confused about what was going on.
In addition to being a sweet tooth, his Renelle was interested in all things cute which included cats.
Now Noctis wasn’t exactly too cute, but it should be enough for the situation at hand....else Adrian would just think of it as useless.
Luckily, it wouldn’t come to that.
"Is the cat yours?" Renelle asked curiously.
"You could say that," he answered before explaining, "it’s my contracted spirit, want to try holding it?" 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
«Who the hell are you treating like a house pet, mortal?» Noctis grumbled, «I’ll have you know that I am—»
"Can I?"
Before it’s words could be completed, it was already in Renelle’s hands as she gently tried scratching behind its ears, an action which not only worked to distract her from her parents’ future death for a short while, but it also turned Noctis into an actual pet.
Noctis stiffened the moment her fingers brushed behind his ears.
«Do not—» it paused whatever it was about to say as its traitorous tail started flicking behind it.
’Reluctantly’, it added, «...continue.»
Renelle continued scratching the same spot, curiously, and the response was immediate.
The once-prideful spirit melted into her hands, his body relaxing as a low, traitorous purr escaped him.
Renelle, on the other hand, seemed completely absorbed.
"...He seems relaxed now," she murmured, almost to herself, her earlier hostility fading.
Adrian’s gaze softened slightly as he watched the scene before him. If he had the ability, he could just pause time right here, leaving the world trapped forever in this single moment.
"I brought a gift," He spoke up again, causing her hand to stop mid-motion.
"...What?"
She looked up at him, her expression guarded again, though not the same as before.
Adrian reached into the shadows once more, his hand disappearing into the darkness before reemerging with a small, neatly boxed package.
"I wasn’t sure what your preferences were," he said calmly, "so I went with something simple."
That was a lie, but who cares.
He opened the box slightly, just enough for the scent to escape and rich, sweet aroma filled the carriage.
Strawberries.
Renelle’s eyes widened ever so slightly, "cake?"
Adrian nodded.
"You seemed like you might appreciate it," her gaze lingered on the box for a moment longer than she intended.
Then she quickly looked away.
"I don’t recall asking for anything."
"Of course not."
He closed the box and set it gently beside her.
"It’s simply a Butler’s gift to his lady," he said with a smile, "nothing else."
She frowned at that.
"...You speak strangely for a butler."
"Do I?"
Not only was he casual with her, but there was also the fact that he seemed to know quite a lot about her likes.
Which caused the question to surface in her mind again.
’Who the hell is he?’
