Chapter 71: Eyes Between Worlds

He attempted to use it the same way he had used the Legendary Weapons Master Blessing before.

It was merely a guess—an instinctive attempt.

But surprisingly...

His intuition was correct.

Ethan’s body suddenly shone with a strange golden light, and the Player System interface reacted as well, glowing with the same golden radiance.

A new sub-interface appeared.

And with it, an entirely different message.

---

Blessing Activated: Class Change at Will

• You may now redistribute your attributes freely.

(Warning: The Blessing has a cooldown period before it can be used again. Choose carefully.)

---

Beside the message, a new option appeared—

Reset Level and Reallocate All Attribute Points.

Seeing this, a wide smile spread across Ethan’s face.

Exactly as he had predicted.

"I’m a little curious about the cooldown period..."

"But that hardly matters."

"With this, I can change classes whenever I want without any real issue."

Right now he was effectively an Skilled knight.

Yet with a single command, he could turn himself into an equally Skilled mage—

Or anything else he wished.

"Now that is worth paying double the souls for."

Ethan was tempted to test it immediately.

But he restrained himself.

The duel was tomorrow.

And he couldn’t risk being unable to restore his stats to their current form in time.

Resisting the urge to test it, Ethan spent most of the night reviewing every one of his abilities again and again, preparing and refining strategies for the decisive duel awaiting him.

He continued like that for hours.

Until exhaustion finally claimed him.

Without even realizing it, Ethan collapsed over his desk, falling asleep right there after pushing his mind and body far enough to drag himself into the world of dreams.

Into the darkness.

There wasn’t much time left now.

Soon...

the game would truly begin.

...

...

...

The universe was vast.

Vaster than any living creature could possibly comprehend.

What most living beings failed to realize was that there was not just a single world.

There were countless worlds.

Scattered randomly across a strange expanse whose origin no one truly understood.

And at the very center of that incomprehensible domain...

At a place that existed within every world—

yet simultaneously outside them all—

stood a peculiar building.

It looked like a tavern.

The structure was made of polished wood that carried a strange, faint scent.

An elegant tavern bathed in warm golden light.

The place was empty.

Only one individual sat there.

Occupying a lonely seat at the bar, he slowly swirled a peculiar drink in his hand.

Yet the strangest thing was not the drink.

It was the man himself.

He was a bizarre existence.

His body resembled a dark stellar skeleton, within which strange lights shimmered like distant stars and galaxies.

It was as if the universe itself had taken physical form...

Put on a formal suit...

And decided to sit quietly inside this tavern.

He had no face.

His head was nothing more than a dark flame, endlessly shimmering with cosmic radiance.

That mysterious being sat alone for a long time.

Until the tavern door opened.

Another figure entered.

Unlike the first, this one looked completely human.

A man wearing a simple business suit, round glasses resting on his nose, and neatly combed hair parted to the side.

He walked in with a tired sway before dropping onto the seat beside the cosmic entity.

The star-shaped being turned toward him and greeted him.

"Ah... Ishizaki. It’s really you. It’s been quite some time since I last saw you."

The cosmic figure spoke.

Ishizaki responded with a faint smile.

"It has been a while, Eiko. I see you haven’t changed at all."

"Neither have you."

Eiko replied calmly before ordering a drink for him.

"The usual?"

"Yes, please."

Ishizaki answered while loosening his tie, exhaustion written all over him.

The cosmic being known as Eiko placed the order.

And it arrived instantly.

Not from a bartender.

The bottle simply formed out of thin air before them.

Ishizaki grabbed the bottle filled with a crimson liquid—red as blood—and drank it in a single gulp before letting out a loud belch.

"Ahh... I’m so glad the Overseers built this place for us. I would’ve gone insane without it."

He complained.

Eiko laughed.

His voice sounded strange—like the echo of an ancient cosmic entity reverberating through the void.

"You seem busy lately. Did you send another hero to the world of Ordeal?"

"Yes, you guessed right. I don’t even know how many times this has happened anymore."

"I stopped counting after a hundred."

Eiko laughed again.

"You’re still telling them that ridiculous ’last hero’ story?"

"Of course I am."

Ishizaki said with a mocking smile.

"You have to make them feel special somehow."

The two of them chatted for a while.

Then Eiko spoke again.

"I don’t understand, Ishizaki. The Ordeal case has gone on for far too long without resolution."

"I’m certain there are heroes in other worlds strong enough to solve it."

"So why do you always choose the weak ones?"

At that, Ishizaki let out a heavy sigh.

"Of course you wouldn’t understand, Eiko."

"You have no idea how difficult it is to be one of the Outer Gods’ messengers."

He complained.

Then he raised his hand.

A dark vortex appeared before him—like a miniature black hole.

Inside it, countless images began to appear.

Heroes from countless worlds.

"There are strict conditions for choosing the heroes who enter Ordeal."

"I can’t send people who would break the balance... or cause disasters."

"And to be honest..."

"There are some I’m simply afraid of."

Ishizaki shouted, showing example after example.

Sometimes the vortex displayed colossal warriors capable of shaking entire continents.

Other times it revealed terrifying beings whose existence rivaled the dread of Ordeal’s own Night Lord.

Among them...

Ishizaki stopped on a particular figure.

"For example... this one terrifies me the most."

He pointed to the image of a strange man with white hair wearing a mysterious black mask.

Eiko stared at the image as Ishizaki revealed fragments of the man’s story.

"From the world of Survival Paths... Frey Starlight."

"Every time I read his story, I get chills."

"He started the worst war I’ve ever witnessed."

"More than half the living creatures in his world died because of him."

"And at the end of his story..."

"He caused something unbelievable."

"Something I’ve never seen before."

"That man is a walking catastrophe."

"If I brought him into Ordeal... he’d become a disaster greater than the Night Lord itself."

"I’m not messing with monsters like that. They scare me !"

Eiko nodded slowly.

"It’s rare to see you tremble like that before a mortal creature."

"But I understand."

"Those monsters are not meant to be touched."

He then turned back to Ishizaki.

"What about your new hero?"

"Do you think he’s worthy?"

"Ah... you mean Ethan."

Ishizaki smiled faintly.

"He’s unique."

"Is he strong?" Eiko asked.

Ishizaki shook his head.

"Quite the opposite."

"He’s incredibly weak."

He paused for a moment before continuing.

"But that’s exactly what makes him interesting."

"And what makes his story worth watching."

A hero who possesses nothing...

yet seeks to claim everything.

Gazing into the dark vortex, Ishizaki revealed Ethan’s image.

"He’s about to fight his first real battle."

"After that..."

"his journey will truly begin."

"Let’s hope it’s a journey worth watching."

After that, Ishizaki and Eiko cast aside the topic of heroes.

They began discussing things that no one else could possibly understand.

Sitting there quietly—

Inside a tavern.

A tavern that existed between worlds.
