Chapter 62: Impossible

His expressionless eyes flickered with a glimmer of emotion as the room’s temperature lowered because of a certain hollowness his words had released.

"Thank you for telling me it was never about the people.... Kael. It was about glory and my selfish desires. But I now understand a human can never go beyond that selfishness. No matter how much he grows. Even now, that flicker I saw in your body, Kael, even you regret dying, right?"

Kael’s barely standing body was shaking as he lowered his head.

Alya bit her lip, "...I am sorry. I am sorry. I am sorry...." She was muttering.

"Hahaha!" Alyndra burst into his classic evil laughter, "So, you see it, too!"

"Yes, more clearly than I could’ve ever..."

"Say it with me!" Alyndra started, "All humans..."

"...Can be selfish."

"...Deserve to die." Alyndra’s eyes widened as he glared at Subaru.

Subaru shook his head, "I can be selfish. I chased glory only because I wasn’t selfish enough to not use my powers for myself.

I felt at my best when I dismantled the entire empire, destroyed the church and the god we worshipped, and killed all humans enjoying the execution."

He glanced at Kael, who saw beyond just his body, "Your regret for your life, it’s not for your sake, is it?"

"...My daughter. I promised her I will get back alive."

My breath shook as I looked at Kael, I-I can never do that...

Subaru smiled, "And why is a person like you here?"

"Church was conducting illegal experiments on orphans..."

"So I was right. You’re just as selfish as me."

Huh?!

"For your ideals, you grew so selfish that you first threw away your daughter to save some orphans, and then now, you’re breaking your promise for them."

Kael’s face turned pale, his eyes widening, "I didn’t throw her away..."

"You’re insane." Alyndra muttered what was probably on everyone’s mind.

"Anyways," Subaru said softly before leaning closer to Alyndra. "Now, I will take your heart. Lucien wants it. You won’t need to suffer the pain of burning alive because of your natural endurance."

"My heart?"

"Your heart." I confirmed softly, "I want to eat it."

"Oh, okay." Alyndra shrugged.

"But first," I was kinda disturbed by how eased he was about this, "can you answer some questions?"

"You aren’t making him destroy my soul. I can reunite with my mother, Eternity, for an eternity now. Church cannot punish me either. So sure, I could try that."

"What is the truth behind the vampire genocide? Like... Why did it happen? How could it happen?" I leaned forward, my eyes burning with curiosity.

"What a boring question."

Alya’s eyes grew ferocious, "Are you serious?!" almost attacking him if not for my grip on her hand.

"Destruction of a race as unkillable as vampires in the strongest empire by an ambush..." I shook my head, "Even without involving feelings, this seems the complete opposite of boring."

"Let me make your ’how’ louder..." Alyndra clapped his hands, "The hero organization, humanity’s strongest force, took no part in it. Just half assed might of two kingdoms was all the support for Velmoria Empire and the church.

Vampires on the other side had some newborns stronger than our average soldier. That Queen, mightier than Orthodox Gods like Mother Infinity, capable of destroying Velmoria with a swipe of her hand, was protecting them.

They have an army bigger than armies of all human nations across the world. Vampires alone." He sighed deeply, noticing surprised faces of some slaves, "Immortality, you know... They can only grow in numbers."

"And one trained vampire is capable of taking down at least sixty knights before maybe getting incapacitated. Do you really think that story is true?" Alyndra asked with scorn.

"...It’s not," I replied without needing to think. Just look at the fucking odds. This shit is not possible without very devious foul play.

"That’s right. So that’s why we didn’t fight. That’s why it’s boring." Alyndra shrugged as flames crackled around his burning body, his skin still wasn’t completely burned.

"Then how?!" Alya interjected, her voice louder than before. I had the same reaction; he still hadn’t answered, just beaten around the bush.

"Velmoria Empire had a way to make vampires stay still, frozen on a spot, paralyzed. I don’t know how.

But us cardinals just had to use holy magic at a massive scale with the aid of just the divine generals of Velmoria Empire, no army, and we killed vampires.

Merely a handful of us, like seventeen. In just a matter of thirty minutes with some chanting, there was only blood, though the divine generals were going around killing vampires by hand to pass time. Wouldn’t you also call it a waste of an epic showdown?" Alyndra’s words sent a chill down everybody’s spines.

"I–It’s impossible..." Alya was the most shaken of them all. She turned to me with a face that showed no colors.

"Velmoria existed for thousands of years by a choice of mercy.... There is no way they had an artifact to work on such a large scale and capable of paralyzing her, all this time."

"And we isolated you all and entered silently too," Alyndra nodded.

"Why...?" Alya asked with suppressed rage.

"Go ask the king of Velmoria or the pope that question. I just followed my orders. Now, will you get done with my heart already? It stings."

Subaru’s time was running out, so I suppose it was time. I had more questions than I started with. And, my mind was too tired to think over all of it.

I nodded and turned back to the dying Kael. Subaru expressionlessly extended his black katana, the flames burning Alyndra bending away to give way to the long katana as it pierced through Alyndra’s chest.

Alyndra’s back tore with a perfect hole, from which a beating heart, beating, getting slower and slower, escaped from it, clinging by the katana’s sharp edge without being pierced.

"Subaru might be correct about me... I still am accepting my death." Kael, almost falling forward, said softly as he was caught by my hand on his shoulder.

"There’s nothing you can change about the past now, Kael," I patted his shoulder, "Why not accept what you did?"

"I did that; that’s what makes it worse. She is still waiting, and I am accepting the reckless things I did. Well, it’s fine, don’t worry about me." He smiled, "Agoni really increased my natural powers by quite a natural amount. I can stay conscious even after this injury."

"That is impressive," I nodded, my eyes struggling to maintain eye contact. I had never watched a friend die, filled with regrets but acceptant of them. It’s painful.

"She likes you, Lucien, Agoni. One of the holy spirits. With my signature skill, I can contact and beg for her powers."

So that’s how he grew stronger... But likes me? What does that mean?

"I am sure she does now... She gave me almost limitless speed in return of just four years that remained of my life. Compared to before, the price was absurdly cheap. As if she knew I was doing it to save you both." Kael explained in resignation.

"Maybe she liked you and wanted to help you complete your wish? Don’t sell yourself short! Maybe your will inspired her." I interjected sharply, not wanting to take that kinda credit at this moment.

Personally, I had no idea what he was talking about, and Alya’s look told she knew nothing beyond the spirit’s name too.

Kael sighed, "I would’ve loved to believe that, but it’s not true."

He chuckled, "I spent most of my life trying to talk to it, but only today, she talked, and she said only one thing, ’Tell the vampire; your turn will be soon, pay the price for it.’ Now, I know it sounds bad, but—

She looked like she had great intentions."

Huh?! Pay the price?! For what? Saving Alya? I didn’t say, but I doubted Kael’s liking part of the conversation. Or maybe I didn’t, if he meant she wanted something from me.
