Chapter 147: Evolution

Evolution

[Due to completing the hidden prerequisites. The evolution tab has been unlocked.]

[What is evolution?]

Mike read the first lines and paused. He’d never actually thought about it too much. He was curious, but he just assumed that it was some other amp he could achieve, or something along those lines. Now, though, he guessed that assessment was wrong.

[Evolution is not growth...]

’That answers that.’

[Growth is the accumulation of strength through levels, stats, skills, and experience gained through struggle and achievement. Evolution is change.] Mike’s expression slowly turned serious.

[If growth is "how much stronger have you become?", evolution is "what kind of being are you becoming?".

Evolution is a fundamental shift in the Host’s nature, expression, and direction. It restructured how existing traits interact, how abilities are used and manifested, and determines the shape of future growth. Once chosen, an evolution cannot be undone.

Unlike skills or abilities, evolutikns are not acquired through levels alone. Instead. Each evolution requires the fulfillment of specific, identity-defining milestones that are unique to Host’s race and circumstances. These milestones are not stated outright, as they are not actions to be completed, but moments to be experienced.

When these milestones are reached, the system does not create evolution paths, it merely reveales them. These said paths are determined by the Host’s past actions, beliefs, habits, and tendencies. Whether hidden or unhidden. Two Lupines can unlock evolution at the same point in time, yet be offered entirely different paths.

Moreover, Evolution is not inherently beneficial. Each path carries advantages, disadvantages, and consequences. Some equations grant control at the cost of instinctual mutism. Others grant power at the cost of rationality. The system does not judge or recommend paths.

The choice is a reflection of not what the Host wants, but what the Host has already started to become.

Upon choosing an evolution paths, other paths in the future may become inaccessible, and future growth will naturally align with the chosen path.

Choose. Carefully.

It isn’t a matter of if you are ready. Rather, it’s a matter of whether you are willing to accept what you are becoming.]

When Mike read the last line, he was silent for a few seconds. Then he read the thing all over again before scrubbing a hand across his face.

’Okay...’ He exhaled. ’Okay...’

Typically, any time something significant was happening and it was system related, the system often left some things up to Mike’s on interpretation. Other times, the system would firmly tell Mike that something was set in stone. An example of the former was how skills and leveling worked, with the acquisition of both depending entirely on Mike.

Then an example of the latter would be Mike’s nature as a Lupine. The system had flat out told him that there was no ’real’ or ’fake’ Mike. The Mike ruled by rationality and the Mike ruled by instincts were both still Mike, and dividing them would cause needless internal conflict.

After reading the description on evolution, Mike felt that it fell somewhere in between, but leaned a bit more towards the former.

One of the things that were set in stone were how the system said that it wasn’t simply growth but Mike choosing to fully grow in the direction of something he was becoming.

However, quite a bit of it was also left up to Mike’s interpretation.

What exactly did it mean when it said tat his evolution options were dependant on his past actions, habits, and tendencies? Were the milestones he had to reach unique to each Lupine or only the results? What did it mean when it said the evolutions aren’t inherently beneficial? Are the pros and cons always one to one? Would some evolution choices do more harm than good? And so on.

All of it was as intriguing as it was concerning.

’... Kinda reminds me of when I first saw that ability orb.’ Mike mused inwardly.

At that moment, he hadn’t had that much time to consider due to his survival depending on what choice he made. So he made a gamble, and it paid off.

Right now, the situation felt significant as well, but the difference was that Mike actually had time to consider his options.

’... Not that I know what those options are yet.’ His mouth twitched before he asked the system.

’Will anything bad happen if I just choose not to evolve?’ At this, the system replied promptly.

[Each evolution options is fueled by Host’s actions and habits. In other words, they are the results of what you are and what you are becoming. If you choose not to pick any option, then you will unconsciously start to develop in the direction of all the options, some more or less than others. The consequences of which cannot be ascertained but will undoubtedly be detrimental.] Hearing this, Mike bit his lip.

’It makes sense. If I saw I’m a body of water that can flow down multiple streams, if I choose one, I could end up at an even bigger body of water. But if I dont choose, I will still flow anyway, but there will be no specific direction, and I’ll be stretched thin by flowing through all the streams until there’s nothing left...’ He shuddered at the thought. Granted, the analogy was perfect since it assumed that picking any path would lead to a good result, but it was certain that not choosing at all wasn’t exactly good either.

’Haa~. Alright. Let’s see what we have first.’ With that thought, Mike navigated to the evolution options and entered.

[ 1.) Balanced Lupine

A path of convergence.

The Balanced Lupine represents a state in which all aspects of the Lupine are recognized, acknowledged, structured, and harmonized, rather than suppressed or indulged.

Upon choosing this evolution, the Host creates a stable axis between human rationality and Lupine nature, allowing for controlled transition between all known states of being:

• Human Form

• Partial Transformation (Stable Variant)

• Partial Transformation (Unstable Variant)

• True Wolf Form

Each firm retains its inherent strengths and weaknesses. Control is not absolute, nor is instinct superior. Rather, both are contained in their proper places. This evolution does not eliminate ferocity, it anchors it.

The Host gains the following:

• Voluntary access to all forms associated with their existence as a Lupine

• Significantly increased stability during transformations

• The ability to consciously interface with the unique Lupine lunar source tied to the Host

Upon choosing this evolution, the connection to the Host’s moon is formalized, allowing for more efficient energy draw, regulation, and refinement of lunar influence. Power gained from this bond is determined through familiarity rather than indulgence.

However. Balance is not dominance.

Entering the True Wolf Form still risks instinctual supremacy. Suppressing instinct for extended periods still carries consequences.

Harmony must be maintained, not forced.

This path favors adaptability, longevity, and self-mastery. Giving the Host the chance to nurture every part of himself equally.]

After reading this, Mike took a deep breath.

’... This is already pretty good. But... I won’t make any choice until I’ve seen the other one to avoid accidental bias.’ Mike told himself before excitedly looking at the second option.

[ 2.) Pairadox Lupine

A path of recognition. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

This evolution does not alter the Host’s nature. It merely acknowledges something that has always existed.

By selecting this path, the boundary separating Host and the coexisting will within him is removed. Control is no longer singular, and thought is no longer unilateral.

The secondary will which is has thus far been ignored, suppressed, or isolated, will gain genuine legitimacy.

This entity is not instinctual. It is not a result of ferocity. It is not a result of emotional overflow.

It is a complete, rational will which has an independent thought process, manners, habits, and desires separate from Host.

Upon Evolution:

• Traits, techniques, and skills exclusive to the secondary will become accessible to the Host, and vice versa

• Sufficient coordination between both wills may lead to unique synergies between their skills and abilities, creating unpredictable patterns

• Mental attacks lose their effectiveness significantly due to having to affect two powerful wills at once instead of just one

• Ths bonuses of both wills acting together aren’t merely additive, but multiplicative

This is not possession.

This is cohabitation.

However, upon choosing this evolution, no will has domination over the other. Neither will can be erased, and neither can fully suppress the other.

The greater the difference in intent between the two, the more volatile the result.

This path does not ask if the Host trusts the other will. Rather, it asks whether the Host is prepared to accept the responsibility of what they are capable together.]

As Mike read, his previously anticipatory expression faded into something unreadable.

A few seconds later.

"... Hm." He hummed, then his gaze flicked back up towards the Balanced Lupine.

’I can sort of see how this came to be. After all, I’ve been doing my best to embrace the more wolffish sides of this Lupine arrangement. Whether it’s more actively using my Partial Transformation or allowing my ferocity to rise to give myself a boost. And I suppose my intent alone played a big part in it.’ He rubbed his chin.

’Also, if I have access to my other forms, then even if I can’t necessarily control them, they would be immensely useful. For instance, what if I encounter a foe I can’t beat as is? Bam! True Wolf Form. Moreover, with this, I could train my control better. At the very least, it’s a lot more viable than raising my ferocity and hoping for the best.’ Mike’s mind spun as he considered the possibilities.

If he was being honest, the choice felt perfect for him. Even the downside of each form still having its respective issues wasn’t that huge for him. After all, it was just the same as if his ferocity rose and forced him into these forms. Only that he had more say in the matter and could better learn to control them.

’And this deal about connecting to my ’moon’...’ He closed his eyes and tilted his head from side to side.

After a few seconds, he opened them, the blue orbs filled with determination.

’Alright. Let’s do it.’
