Both women halted abruptly, gazing at him with wide eyes.

Rex’s voice was cold when he said, "This territorial bullshit behavior ends here and now!"

"I don’t have time for petty competitions! If you two want to serve me, that’s fine!" Rex pointed at them. "Just don’t fight over stupid and annoying things!"

"You all need to know how to share and work together to make me feel even better! You got that?!"

"Y-yes...!" Both agreed with a fast nod.

He pointed at Lilith. "You need to go back to the Underlayer right now."

"You’ve been on the surface all night, and Mordecai will expect some kind of report."

"Tell him I’m successfully embedded in the Academy’s student population and will attend the Apostle gathering as planned."

"Make yourself available for when I need you, but don’t make it obvious that you’re here."

Lilith’s face fell. "But Master, I wanted to be with you longer! I could stay a little longer and—"

"Now, Lilith," Rex said in a strong voice. "I have things to do as a student."

"The longer you stay, the more likely it is that someone will notice your demonic nature and cause trouble."

"Leave now and come back again when I say so!"

She seemed like she wanted to argue more, but the way he spoke made it clear that he was in charge. She nodded, but not happily, and then she walked toward him with clear purpose.

"Okay... I need to obey Master’s order... uhhhh..." Lilith muttered.

She rushed in and kissed him quickly on the lips before he could stop her. "Goodbye, Master!"

"I’ll come back whenever you call! I love you! Bye-bye~!"

Then she was gone, with her teleportation magic kicking in and taking her away before he could say anything. The air where she had been standing sparkled for a moment before settling down.

Rex looked at Lily, who was staring at the place where Lilith had disappeared with a look that was both relieved and angry.

"She kissed you," Lily said in a harsh tone.

"She did," Rex said. "And I didn’t ask her to."

"People get really intense when they want something the most. You should know that from your own experience."

Lily turned a little red, as if she were remembering something she did when she was at her most excited. "I guess that’s fair."

She got closer, and it was clear that her territorial instincts were still strong. "But first, you’re also mine... just remember that."

Rex told her, "I remember."

He hugged her tightly, letting her know that he was there and paying attention to her. "Now I really have to get ready."

"I have to go to the Academy this morning for orientation and to get my class assignments."

Lily stepped back, and her face changed from worry to something else that Rex knew was jealousy. "The Academy..."

"You’ll be with other students... especially other women who will see you, talk to you, and probably try to—"

"Lily," Rex said softly to stop her. "Yes, there will be other women at the Academy."

"It’s a school with hundreds and thousands of students, but that doesn’t change anything between us."

"You promise you won’t replace me?" Her voice was quiet again, and she sounded weak, like someone who was afraid of losing their person.

Rex pulled her close again and said, "I promise I’ll never replace you."

"You were the first... you’re also special, and that won’t change no matter who else I talk to."

"But if you keep acting like this, then I might as well ditch you." Rex starts threatening her.

Lily shook her head. "I-I behave! I promise!"

"Good"

She let herself relax toward him and took his comfort. They stood there for a few minutes, just holding each other, until the sunlight coming through the window reminded Rex that time was passing and he really did need to get ready for the day.

Rex was clean and dressed like an Academy student an hour later. He was walking through the morning streets of Aethelgard with Lily beside him.

She had insisted on going with him to the Academy entrance because she wanted to spend as much time with him as possible before he had to go back to his student duties.

People were now moving through the streets of the city with purpose. Merchants were opening their stores, workers were going to various jobs, and children were being led to the academy designed exclusively for them.

The attack from the night before may have been stopped, but life had already returned to normal with the strength of a long-established city.

When they got to the plaza in front of the Grand Academy, they found Helena, Diana, Elliot, and Evelyn already there.

It looks like the Starlight family wanted to send Rex off in style on his first day of school.

"Good morning, Rex," Helena said with a smile. "Are you ready for your first day at the best magical academy in the world?"

"As ready as I’ll ever be." Rex said, "Even though I have to admit that I’m not sure what to expect."

"At first, the Academy can be a bit too much for a first-timer like you." Helena said, "Let me give you a quick rundown of what you need to know."

She started with what was obviously a rehearsed explanation, probably one she had given to Lily when her daughter first started going. Rex paid close attention and remembered every word.

There were different types of students at the Academy. Regular students who paid for the academy and went to regular classes.

Academyship students, who had to take tests to get in and then had to do service work in exchange for free education.

Honor students, who were personally invited by faculty or administration and got both respect and special treatment. And finally, there were special category students like reincarnators, who had their own programs made just for them.

Rex was an Honor student, which put him in the second-highest level of the academy’s social hierarchy. He would be able to take advanced classes, use better facilities, and talk directly to the best professors.

The only students who did better were the truly exceptional ones who had become famous for their combat skills or magical inventions.

Helena went on, "Honor students are expected to keep up with certain standards."

"Of course, you are expected to demonstrate academic excellence and behavior that matches the prestige of your position..." Helena giggled. "You are the Academy’s choice, so don’t embarrass my mother by making her look like she made a bad choice."

"Got it," Rex said.

He didn’t want to do anything that would cause problems or get him in trouble. He wanted to fit in, learn about the other Apostles and reincarnators, and put himself in the best position.

Acting like a polite, thankful Honor student met all of those goals.

Diana stepped up and handed him a small leather-bound notebook. "This has maps of the Academy, class schedules, and notes about different professors."

"I made it last night after Mother told me you would be starting today, so I hope it will help you find your way around without getting lost."

"Thank you," Rex said, really grateful for the help. "That’s very nice of you."

"Just trying to help," Diana said, blushing a little at the praise, but she stayed calm. "The Academy is huge."

"Even students who have been there for a long time get lost sometimes." Diana raised her finger. "I also want to spar in archery with you again if you’ve gotten better without luck."

"I’ll keep that in mind." Rex nodded, realizing that it was a signal for him to pursue Lilith after her.

Elliot patted him on the shoulder. "Don’t worry too much about the social side of things."

"Most students are good people who just want to learn, but try to stay away from the troublemakers, be polite to the teachers, and you’ll be fine."

Evelyn, who had been quiet until now, spoke up. "Be careful of reincarnator groups."

"Some of them get together and look down on natives or other reincarnators who don’t agree with their beliefs."

"If you’re not careful, things can get political quickly."

Rex nodded and put that warning in the back of his mind. "I’ll remember that."
