The Mafia's Undoing-Chapter 173: Recovery and Renewal
Luca arrived safely with Rose, as I was screaming and crying, running to them.
"Mama! Mama!" Rose was crying, reaching for me. She was scared and terrified, but seeing her alive was enough for me.
I grabbed her from Luca’s arms and held on to her tight. I just couldn’t stop sobbing.
"You’re okay, and you’re safe. Mama’s here. Mama’s got you, alright." I kissed her forehead and cheeks, checking her over frantically. Her fingers, toes, arms, legs, and face.
There were no injuries and no bruises. She was not harmed; she was only scared.
"You’re okay, baby girl. You’re safe now."
Rose clung to me and wouldn’t let go. She had been traumatized by hours with a stranger.
But now she was home and safe.
Rose was safe, but Tony wasn’t back yet, I realized later.
"Where is he?" I demanded, my phone pressed to my ear as I spoke to Luca.
"There was a shootout. Juliet resisted arrest, and Tony was hit. We’re transporting him to the hospital now."
My heart stopped beating for a moment. "Is he alive?"
"Yes. Injured but alive. He had a few broken ribs from the bullet impact on the vest. We’re en route to Manhattan Presbyterian."
I felt a mix of relief and terror. "I’m coming."
"Katherine, stay with Rose. We can handle this over here."
"He’s my husband, so I get to be there," I said matter-of-factly. "I’m also bringing Rose along. I’m not letting her out of my sight ever again."
We were at the hospital in the emergency room with Rose in my arms as I refused to put her down. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂
Tony was in a trauma bay. The doctors were working to stabilize him.
"There were a few broken ribs from the bullet impact," a doctor explained. "He has a bruised lung. It’s painful but recoverable and would need a few weeks to heal fully."
"Can I see him?"
"Of course. He’s awake and has been asking for you both."
They let me in with Rose still clinging to me.
Tony was on the bed, feeling groggy and in pain, but smiling when he saw us.
"Rose?"
"Safe. She’s here." I lifted Rose so he could see her. "See, baby? Daddy’s okay."
Rose reached for Tony. "Dada?"
"Daddy’s okay, sweetheart. Just tired and needs to rest."
All three of us were together and safe.
I was crying with relief, already feeling overwhelmed.
"You could have died."
"But I didn’t, and Rose is safe. That’s all that matters."
Timothy updated us later. Juliet has been taken to federal custody and charged with multiple charges, including kidnapping, attempted murder, conspiracy, and weapons violations.
"She’ll never see freedom. Ever. This is multiple life sentences without possibility of parole."
"Is it really over?" I asked, my voice shaking. "Really, truly over?"
Timothy was quiet, then answered quietly. "Charles Sterling’s network is dismantled. Victoria is dead, Juliet’s imprisoned. Morrison, Davidson, Diane Reece, Alexander Reece, The Twelve, Hassan Patton, James Preston, and Grayson Mallin are all neutralized or in custody. So yes, Katherine. It’s over."
I wanted to believe it, but I was afraid to hope.
It has been almost four years of constant threats and danger. Could it really be over?
Later on, the hospital room became a family gathering place.
Bella visited, followed by Susan, Elliot, and Jeff.
Rose was passed around, cuddled, and loved. Everyone was crying with relief that she was back home.
"You scared us," Bella said to Tony, tears streaming down her face. "Don’t ever do that again."
"Wasn’t planning on it."
Elliot approached Tony’s bed. "Statistically, you should be dead. The bullet’s impact on your ribs, even with a vest, should have caused catastrophic organ damage. You’re extremely fortunate."
"The FBI training paid off, and maybe a little luck."
Susan just held onto Rose, still crying. "My goddaughter is safe. Thank God. Thank God."
Two weeks later, Tony was home from the hospital and was healing.
His ribs were taped, and he was on pain medication. He also had limited mobility, but the most important thing was that he was home with us.
Rose and I hovered around him. We were protective and clingy and wouldn’t let him out of our sight.
"I’m okay," he assured us. "Just sore."
"You almost died for Rose. You traded your life for hers."
"And I’d do it again. Every single time without hesitation."
Rose was clingy and wouldn’t leave my side. She had been scared of strangers and had nightmares.
Screaming in the middle of the night, scared and reaching for me.
We consulted a pediatric psychologist, Dr. Ana Bridges.
"This is a normal response to kidnapping trauma. She’s processing what happened and would heal with time, stability, and love."
"Will she remember this?"
"At ten months? Probably, but not consciously. Trauma can leave impressions; the key is providing consistent safety and comfort now."
Tony and I both carried guilt. "This happened because of us. Our enemies and our past."
"No," Dr. Bridges corrected us firmly. "This happened because someone made evil choices. You protected your daughter, and you got her back. You’re keeping her safe, that’s what matters."
We started the family therapy. All three of us were processing and healing.
The crisis brought Tony and me closer, not apart.
It strengthened us instead of fracturing.
"I almost lost you," I said one night when Rose was asleep in her crib. "Both of you. Rose and you. I can’t-"
"But you didn’t. We’re here and safe. We survived again."
We made love carefully with Tony’s ribs still healing. It was gentle, tender, and reconnecting.
"I love you more than I can express."
"I love you too. You saved our daughter, risked everything, and gave everything."
"She’s worth everything. You both are."
Despite the chaos, Marvin Ventures was thriving.
The first investments have been made and companies funded.
It was a clean energy startup, going into an education technology company, and a healthcare innovation. This was an ethical business as we were building something different.
We had fought so had to be where we were and were not backing down.
