The Mafia's Undoing-Chapter 178: The Siege Reckoning
Susan’s scream came through the phone. "Someone’s in the house!"
Following was silence; the feed cut out to dead air.
My blood ran cold. "Rose."
I was already running with Tony beside me. The FBI was mobilizing, and chaos reigned everywhere.
"How did he find the location?" Timothy demanded over comms.
"Doesn’t matter. My daughter is there! GO!" Tony said as we got into the SUV.
We raced through Manhattan with the sirens blaring; our speed limits were meaningless.
My mind was spiraling as I was praying to myself... please let her be okay. Please. Please.
Tony was on the phone with Luca. "What’s the status?"
"En route. We’re three minutes out and hearing gunfire."
Gunfire at the secure location where my baby was?
I couldn’t breathe or think; I just wanted them to drive much faster.
We arrived at the suburban safe house. which was a nondescript residential area.
The guards were down, their bodies on the ground - dead and executed professionally.
Dante’s team was surrounded inside the building. The FBI tactical team was outside in a standoff. It was an active shooter situation.
"Where’s Rose?" I screamed, grabbing the FBI commander. "WHERE IS MY DAUGHTER?"
"Ma’am, we’re assessing-"
"ASSESS FASTER!"
Susan’s phone connected, her voice shaking with terror.
"Katherine-"
"Where’s Rose? Is she alive?"
"Yes, we’re in the panic room. I got her to the panic room before they breached. She’s safe. For now."
Relief flooded through me. "How many attackers?"
"Four. Maybe five, but they’re heavily armed in military gear."
"Where are you? Are you alright?" I asked.
"Yes, I am. We’re in the closet on the second floor, hiding. They don’t know I’m here yet."
"Stay hidden and don’t move. The FBI is coming."
The FBI tactical team was preparing to breach. They were clearing the building to rescue Rose and Susan.
But Dante’s men held a superior position inside, and these people were trained, experienced, and deadly.
"This is a kill team," the FBI commander noted grimly. "They’re not kidnappers but here to eliminate targets."
My panic was beginning to rise. "Eliminate? My daughter is in there!"
"We’re going in. But Mrs. Marvin, it’s going to be loud and dangerous. You need to stay here."
Tony was already moving. "I’m going with you."
"Negative. Civilians remain outside the perimeter-" 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦
"The hell I am! That’s my daughter in there, and I’m going!"
"Me too." My voice was steel. "I’m going in."
"Katherine, no-" Tony started.
"That’s my baby in there. I’m not waiting out here while other people save her. I’m going with you."
The FBI commander studied me. "Can you shoot?"
"Yes." I took lessons from Tony. After the threats began, we had prepared for moments like this in the past.
"Fine. Vest up and stay behind my team. Follow orders and don’t be a hero."
"I’m not trying to be a hero. I’m trying to be a mother."
We were breaching, front and back simultaneously.
There were flashbangs, smoke grenades, and the gunfire was immediate
Dante’s team began to engage aggressively.
I was behind the FBI team, my heart pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat.
The terror and determination were mixed in a lethal combination.
"ROSE!" I screamed, I couldn’t help it. "MAMA’S COMING!"
Tony was beside me, armed, focused, and protective.
We did room-to-room clearing. It was methodical and dangerous.
I saw bodies; there were two of Dante’s men down, both dead.
The FBI was also taking casualties. Two agents had been shot; it was not fatal, but they were injured and bleeding.
I saw movement; it was one of Dante’s men raising his weapon toward an FBI agent’s back.
Without thinking, I fired.
The gun kicked in my hands, and the man dropped dead.
I just saved the agent’s life, but my hands were shaking. "I just, I shot-"
"Stay focused!" Tony pulled me forward. "Rose needs us!"
We got to the panic room. It was a reinforced steel door with a code lock.
"Susan! It’s us, Katherine and Tony! Open up!"
The door opened, and I saw Susan’s face; she looked terrified and was tear-streaked, but she was alive.
And behind her was my baby Rose.
Crying, scared, and reaching for me.
"MAMA!"
I grabbed her, sobbing, holding her so tight. "You’re okay, and you’re safe. Mama’s got you."
She was crying and clinging to me. I checked her over, and she was unhurt.
"We need to move!" The FBI agent urged. "Building’s not secure yet!"
They began an extraction, the FBI clearing our path and Dante’s team retreating.
But one man stayed behind at the center of the room.
He had on an explosive vest, a suicide bomber.
"EVERYONE OUT!" The FBI was screaming. "MOVE MOVE MOVE!"
I ran, holding Rose close to me with Tony beside us and the FBI agents surrounding.
The explosion behind us was massive, shaking the building.
The blast wave knocked us down, our ears ringing, and dust everywhere.
But we got out alive and safe.
Rose was crying, and I checked her frantically. She was okay, no injuries and no blood.
"She’s okay," Tony kept on saying. "She’s okay."
But I couldn’t stop shaking, the adrenaline crash, the terror, and the relief.
When we got outside, there were ambulances everywhere, and the FBI was securing the scene.
Dante’s team, three of them were dead, one was captured alive, and one was dead from a suicide vest.
The FBI casualties only recorded four injured, but none fatal.
I held onto Rose, never letting her go.
She clung to me, her face buried in my neck, still crying from the chaos happening around her.
"Mama here. Mama’s got you. You’re safe now." I said, kissing her cheek and comforting her.
But was I lying to her or to myself? Was she really safe, and would she ever be?
The FBI began interrogating the captured attacker, who was alive. He was a professional mercenary and had a European accent.
We were listening from nearby. with Rose in my arms.
"Where’s Dante Marvin?"
"I don’t know. We received the orders remotely through digital dead drops. Never met him face-to-face."
"What were your orders?"
"Kill everyone in the house and leave no survivors. Make it look like a massacre to send a message."
Tony’s face went white. "He wanted Rose dead, Katherine dead, and Susan. Everyone."
"This isn’t about money," I whispered, the realization hitting me again. "It never was. It’s about revenge and a complete annihilation of the Marvin family."
That night, we were in a different safe house. This was the third location in two days.
Rose was finally asleep. She had been exhausted from crying and traumatized.
I was in the bathroom crying and thinking to myself.
I killed a man today.
It was not the first time, but I thought those days were behind us and buried in the past.
After Rose came, I thought we’d finally found peace. that we now had safety and a normal life.
But we’re back to this... this violence, death, and survival.
My hands were still shaking, and I could still feel the gun’s kick and the man falling.
Tony found me. "Katherine-"
"I killed someone. I shot him, and he died. I thought this life was already buried behind us, Tony. I can’t believe we’re going back to this after we thought we finally had peace. I didn’t want to go back to this kind of life since Rose came in."
"You saved lives and protected our daughter."
"I’m a murderer."
"You’re a mother. There’s a difference."
He held me as I cried. For what we’ve lost and for what we’ve become.
I called Bella to check in on her and follow up on David’s funeral arrangements.
"I’m so sorry about David."
Her voice sounded empty and destroyed. "Fifteen people at my company and David dies. Now, they almost had Rose, you, and Susan. How many more people will die because of the Marvin name?"
"This ends. We end Dante." I said, thinking about my daughter.
"How? He’s a ghost and attacks through proxies. He hides behind mercenaries, how do we stop that?"
I didn’t have an answer, but determination was already hardening inside me.
"We find him, and we end him. Permanently." I replied.
That night, Tony and I were alone, and Rose was sleeping in her crib close to us.
We couldn’t let her out of our sight, not after today.
"I’m going to kill him," Tony said quietly. "Dante. I’m going to find him and end this."
I should object, say no, and talk him out of murder.
But I didn’t.
"No negotiations, no police, and no FBI. He tried to kill our daughter. He killed David and fifteen employees. This ends with blood."
"What do you need from me?"
He looked at me, surprised. "Support and forgiveness, for what I’m about to do."
"You have both."
Early the next morning, before dawn, Thomas appeared at the safe house.
Somehow, he found us again, even despite the maximum security we put in place.
"I know where Dante is, and I know how to get to him."
Tony was immediately alert. "Where?"
"But Tony, if you go after him, you become what I was. What I spent years trying to atone for. You become a killer and a monster like me."
"Then I’m a monster. I’ve killed in the past, so this isn’t new. Tell me where he is."
"Yes, but that was different. You were defending yourself. Now you’re hunting and planning murder. You are trying to become a better man, and this-"
"Tell me where he is," Tony repeated, his voice cold and final.
Thomas nodded slowly. "Venice, in a private island off the coast. It’s heavily guarded with a tight professional security team. You’ll need resources and a team. And Tony... you’ll probably die trying."
"Then I die, but Dante dies first to ensure that Rose lives in a world where he doesn’t exist."
Thomas looked at his son, pride and sorrow mixed. "I’ll help. This is one last job between father and son. We end the Marvin curse together."
I watched them silently.
My husband was planning murder and becoming the thing he always feared.
The thing he was trying so hard not to be.
But for Rose and for the family to finally get peace.
I didn’t stop him and won’t stop him.
Maybe I’ve become a monster, too.
Maybe that’s what survival requires.
Maybe there’s no other way.
"When do we leave?" Tony asked.
"Tomorrow night. We end this, one way or another."
