The Mafia's Undoing-Chapter 195: Expansion
Three months after Marvin Ventures relaunched. The business was exploding beyond our wildest expectations.
Our portfolio value had expanded from $300 million to $450 million in just three months, an unprecedented growth for us.
We had clients flooding in. Our ethical investing was trending, and the media coverage was overwhelmingly positive.
Tony and I worked sixteen hours a day; it was draining, but we felt exhilarated.
"We’re actually doing it. This is us building something legitimate and lasting that we can be proud of."
But the warning signs were emerging, and Maxwell was pushing towards aggressive expansion too fast.
We received an invitation to an investment conference in London. Major European firms were interested in strategic partnerships.
This was a massive opportunity to expand Marvin Ventures internationally, with European headquarters and access to billions in potential capital.
Maxwell was enthusiastic, almost aggressive: "This is our moment. We strike now and dominate the global ethical investing market."
I was cautious and instinctively wary. "We just relaunched three months ago. Isn’t this too fast and too much risk?"
Tony was torn between opportunity and caution: "Opportunity like this doesn’t come twice. But Katherine’s right... we need to be careful and strategic."
The decision was made, we will send Tony and Maxwell to London to explore opportunities carefully, and I will stay to manage operations and the kids.
Maxwell suggested subtle changes. They were small at first, almost reasonable.
"We need to loosen our ethical standards, just slightly, to remain competitive in certain markets."
"What exactly do you mean by ’loosen’?" I asked carefully.
"Some investments exist in gray areas that are highly profitable. We’re leaving money on the table here."
I was firm with my words. "That’s exactly how it starts, and we become what we destroyed eventually. We do not make compromises."
"It’s just business pragmatism, not corruption. There’s a difference."
I could see the subtle red flags waving. It was hard to pinpoint exactly, but I could feel that something was wrong.
Rose started kindergarten, and we were so emotional on her first day. My baby was growing up so fast.
"Mama, will you pick me up after school?"
"I’ll try, baby. If not me, then Daddy or Aunt Bella will."
I felt the guilt instantly. The working-mother guilt was consuming me as I missed these precious moments.
Hector was excelling academically. He received recommendations for gifted programs from teachers.
"Mama Katherine, can you come to my science fair presentation?"
"When is it, sweetheart?"
"Next Tuesday. 2 PM."
I had to double-check my schedule and realized I had meetings clashing everywhere. "I’ll move things around and try to be there, alright?"
Thomas was growing so fast. At eleven months old now and almost walking independently. He needed so much attention; we had the nanny helping, but I wanted to be present for everything.
Susan visited and was glowing. She looked so happy; married life clearly suited her beautifully.
"Katherine, I have news. Jesse and I are trying for a baby." She said excitedly.
I was shocked and delighted at once. "Susan! That’s really wonderful. I thought you both wanted to take your time-"
"I’m thirty-five and Jesse’s forty. We want to try now, perform IVF if necessary. We really want a family together."
"I’m so happy for you, and I know you’ll be an absolutely amazing mother."
"I learned from watching you. Juggling everything and being strong through everything."
Bella’s victim advocacy organization was growing rapidly and now had national recognition.
"I’m being asked to testify before Congress. It will be about corporate crime victims’ rights legislation." She said over the phone.
"Bella, that’s incredible!"
"It’s terrifying, honestly, but important to me. I’m using my experience with David’s death, Thomas’s crimes, and everything we all survived."
"You’re turning pain into genuine purpose. That’s powerful and meaningful, you should be proud." I told her reassuringly.
Tony was leaving for London on a one-week business trip critical to the company’s expansion.
The night before his departure, when the kids were finally asleep. We had our rare moment alone together.
We made love desperately, knowing he’ll be gone for a short while and missing the connection already before he’d even left.
It was passionate, intense, with me on top, controlling the pace and claiming him completely.
"I hate when you travel. I miss you already, and you haven’t even left." I said teasingly.
"It’s one week, and you know it’s for our future. It’s for the business we’re building."
"I know, but still. Come back to me safely."
We went through multiple passionate rounds, exhausting ourselves completely, our connection, love, and partnership reaffirmed.
"Always. You know I always come back to you." He whispered moments after.

Tony’s POV
Maxwell and I flew to London in first class. The business meetings were scheduled throughout the week.
Maxwell was working constantly during the flight, making calls and sending emails. He was networking relentlessly.
"You’re very well connected in Europe. More than I initially realized." I said, studying him.
"I’ve been building strategic relationships for years. Now they’re finally paying off significantly."
There was something in his tone that was somehow off, but I couldn’t quite place what bothered me.
We arrived in London and checked into a luxury hotel. The meetings started immediately upon arrival.
The meeting brought together potential European partners and prestigious investment firms. These were old-money, established institutional investors.
Lord Edmund Carrington, a member of the British nobility, had a massive financial empire and was interested in strategic partnerships.
"Marvin Ventures’ ethical approach is quite refreshing, but European markets require certain... flexibility."
"What kind of flexibility exactly?" I had asked cautiously.
"We invest in industries you Americans find morally objectionable. Defense contractors, certain pharmaceutical companies, and the tobacco industry. They’re completely legal here in Europe."
I was visibly uncomfortable. "Our entire brand is built on ethics, and we can’t compromise that."
Maxwell interjected smoothly. "Look, we can be pragmatic here. This is the European division with different regional standards. American clients never need to know."
I had to keep firm in what we stood for. "That’s active deception, and it’s exactly what we’re fighting against."
That night in the hotel bar, I saw Maxwell meeting someone in secret. He had this suspicious behavior, which I was well familiar with.
I followed discreetly and saw Maxwell with a Russian businessman whom he called Dmitri Volkov. He must be a known oligarch with questionable connections based on what I could deduce.
They had the conversation in Russian, although I do not speak it, the body language was clear... friendly, familiar, and obviously looked like a long-standing relationship.
I researched Volkov immediately. He was connected to organized crime, money laundering operations, and had international sanctions violations.
"Why is Maxwell secretly meeting with a known criminal oligarch?" I asked myself.
Immediately, I called Luca urgently. "I need you to help run a deep background check on Maxwell Pierson. Everything you can find about him. His financial ties and associates."

Katherine’s POV
Back home, where I managed operations, I began noticing some financial irregularities.
They were small transactions hidden carefully. The funds were mysteriously moved to offshore accounts.
"Why are we suddenly moving money offshore?" Icalled to ask the chief accountant.
He tried explaining: "Mr. Pierson personally authorized it. He said it was a tax optimization strategy."
"I didn’t authorize this, and Tony didn’t authorize this either. Who specifically approved these transfers?" I asked again, my voice raising slightly.
"Mr. Pierson has unilateral authority as 30% equity partner. It’s clearly specified in the partnership agreement, so he authorized it."
I frantically went back to review the agreement. Shit! There was a buried clause we initially missed. Maxwell had unilateral authority on certain critical financial decisions.
"How did I miss this? How did our lawyers miss this critical clause?" I asked out loud.
Luca called me, sounding urgent. "We have a serious problem. A very big one."
"What problem?"
"Maxwell Pierson. His entire investment capital? They are dirty money from Russian oligarchs and Chinese state-owned enterprises. All these were laundered through sophisticated shell companies."
"What? But we did extensive background checks-"
"I meant extremely sophisticated money laundering. It took me three full days to trace them completely, but it’s definitely there. Maxwell is actively using Marvin Ventures to legitimize criminal money."
"Oh my God. We’re money laundering... just like Thomas did decades ago."
"Worse, actually. This is international money laundering involving Federal RICO violations. You could both go to prison for decades."
I realized the horrible truth; this was Maxwell’s plan from the very beginning. To use Marvin Ventures’ sterling ethical reputation to launder criminal money.
The lawsuit was leverage, and the partnership was a Trojan horse. We unknowingly walked directly into his trap.
Tony didn’t know this yet; he was still in London with Maxwell, leaving him vulnerable.
I called Tony urgently. "Don’t sign anything and don’t agree to anything. Maxwell is compromised and not who we think he is."
"What? Katherine, what’s wrong? What happened?"
"His money’s dirty and close to Russian oligarchs. We’re being used for international money laundering."
"I’ll confront him immediately. Right now." He said.
"No! Don’t tip him off yet, just come home safely, and we’d handle this carefully together."

Tony’s POV
I confronted Maxwell anyway in the hotel room, as I couldn’t stop myself from what I had just figured out, from my wife, and what I had seen at the bar.
"I know about Volkov and about the dirty money. You’re laundering through Marvin Ventures."
Maxwell smiled, surprisingly calm, almost amused. "Of course I am. That was always the entire plan, and you formally agreed to it. You all signed legal contracts. Your fingerprints are everywhere on the documents."
"We didn’t know the truth-"
"Doesn’t matter legally, you’re complicit now. You go to the FBI, you incriminate yourself directly, and you and Katherine go to prison. Your children become orphans."
"You son of a bitch."
"I’m a businessman, and you’re my partner now permanently. Welcome to the family business, Tony." He said, sipping his whisky while he stood.
The door opened suddenly as Dmitri Volkov entered. He was a large, intimidating man and obviously armed.
"Mr. Marvin, we need to discuss terms immediately. You work for us now, or your family suffers severe consequences."
F**k! I was trapped in a foreign country, surrounded by criminals, with no FBI backup and no help available.
My phone was taken forcibly, leaving me isolated.

Katherine’s POV
Meanwhile, at home, I couldn’t reach Tony. His phone was completely dead, which made me panic.
"I can feel something’s wrong. Something’s very wrong with Tony."
Luca was immediately decisive. "I’m booking an emergency flight to London right now. We’re getting him back."
I hoped this was not too late?
Tony was in danger in an unknown country, our business had been compromised, and our family was at risk.
Everything we built again, now crumbling.
The cycle never ends. Now, it’s a new enemy with the same destructive patterns.
And all I could think of was whether we’d survive this time.
