Chapter 213: In Every Form, I Still Love You

"But I should’ve ..." Edmund lowered his head, his voice cracking like something inside him had finally broken. "I should’ve tried harder to control him. If I had ... maybe I could’ve stopped it. Maybe I could’ve saved them."

He buried his face in his hands, trying to block out the memories. "I should’ve run away before it happened. I should’ve left earlier, and then maybe ... I wouldn’t have killed them."

It might sound heartless, but deep down, Primrose truly believed that death had been the most fitting end for Edmund’s parents.

If Edmund had run away while they were still alive, there was always the chance he might run into them again, and that would have ruined his life all over again.

So yes, in her heart, Primrose was glad they were gone. Because if they weren’t, she might’ve been the one to hunt them down and make sure they never hurt him again.

"Edmund. Hey, Edmund!" Primrose called out, needing to bring him back to her. "You were four." She repeated more firmly, "You were just a four-year-old boy, and the only thing you ever knew was pain and fear."

"What happened back then ... it wasn’t because you were a monster." She reached for his hands. "It happened because your parents didn’t protect you the way they should’ve."

They didn’t protect him from the world and worse, they didn’t protect him from themselves. So the part of him that was supposed to guard him—his wolf—had no choice but to take over.

"But still ..." Edmund mumbled, his head bowed low. "Aren’t you scared of me? After what I just told you ... after knowing what I’ve done?"

[I can control my wolf better now,] he thought. But sometimes, when things get too chaotic, he still manages to take over.

[What if I hurt her one day? What if I lose control again?]

[I never should’ve let her love me. I should’ve just marked her and walked away.]

That was one of the reasons why he had run from her in the other timeline. Not just because he feared hurting her, but because he was terrified that a darker version of himself might do something unforgivable to the woman he loved.

Primrose cupped his face in her hands, then leaned in close and whispered, "If I was afraid of you ... would I do this?"

She kissed him softly. Just once. But in that single touch, all the noise in Edmund’s head went quiet.

"I’m not afraid of you." She kissed him again, gently and slowly—once, twice, three times—until he froze completely under the weight of her love.

His lips were still cold from the water and the wind, but every time she kissed him, they got a little warmer.

"But ... what if," Edmund whispered, gently stopping her with his hands, "what if I accidentally hurt you someday? Even if I don’t mean to?"

"It’s called an accident for a reason, my husband," Primrose said with a light smile. "An accident isn’t something you plan. It’s something that just happens. And I know—no, I believe you would never hurt me on purpose."

"How can you be so sure?" he asked softly.

"Because you love me." She looked at him like he was the only person in the world. "My husband loves me with all his heart, and I know he’d do everything in his power to protect me."

Edmund might look like a fierce, hardened Lycan on the outside, but his love was gentle, gentler than the wind, and warmer than a crackling fire.

"And even if you do hurt me someday by accident ..." Primrose’s gaze softened, her golden eyes locking onto his, "I’ll still love you and I’m not going to leave you."

Because she knew Edmund had never, not even for a single moment, wanted to hurt her.

Still, she hoped that day would never come. Because let’s be honest, if Edmund accidentally snapped her neck or slammed her to the hard ground ... well, she’d probably die on the spot.

Alright, that was actually a little scary, but not nearly as terrifying as imagining the look on Edmund’s face if he ever realized he’d accidentally killed the woman he loved most.

That’s why Primrose prayed with all her heart that something like that would never happen between them, not because she was afraid of getting hurt, but because she didn’t want Edmund to carry that kind of guilt for the rest of his life.

"Why are you like this?" Edmund sighed heavily, sounding helpless as he watched his wife kiss him again and again, acting so sweet and adorable it made his chest ache. "Why are you so kind to me?"

Honestly, Primrose was getting a little tired of that question.

Seriously? Edmund had asked it more than once, like he was some clingy wife trying to make sure her husband would still love her even if she turned into a worm.

Still, no matter how many times he asked, Primrose never got tired of giving him the same answer. "Because I love you." She kissed him again, this time three times in a row. "I truly love you with all my heart, and if you want the truth, your wolf form looks cute to me!"

Edmund blinked in disbelief. "I-it’s not cute!" he stammered, quickly turning his face away. "My wolf just ... has thick fur. I still look like a monster."

[My wife probably had nightmares after seeing me like that,] he thought.

"Monster?" Primrose frowned. "Edmund, your wolf form is majestic."

Her mind had been a mess when Edmund transformed, so she hadn’t said anything back then when he approached her.

But if she could go back and speak her thoughts out loud, Primrose would’ve told him, "Your wolf form is beautiful."

Because it was.

It was truly beautiful and mesmerizing.

When the moonlight touched his white fur, it gave the illusion that he was glowing in the middle of the night’s darkness.

His sharp fangs might’ve made him look a little fierce and intimidating, but to Primrose, he was still nothing more than her husband.

No matter what form he took, at the end of the day, he was Edmund, her husband, the man who would do anything for his wife.

"Edmund, I love you," she said again. "I love you in every form. Whether you’re in your human body or your wolf form, it doesn’t matter to me."
