The Mind-Reading Mate: Why Is the Lycan King So Obsessed With Me?!-Chapter 34: A Sweet Lady-in-Waiting (I)
Chapter 34: A Sweet Lady-in-Waiting (I)
Solene Delauney.
She was the daughter of Marquess Delauney, the ruler of Ravencourt—a borderland territory. Because of its location, the House of Delauney had always been entrusted with protecting the frontier.
Their family name was legendary. The Delauneys were known for producing some of the finest knights, commanders, and warriors in history. People whispered that every single one of them was either a master swordsman or a brilliant strategist. Even the women.
In Primrose’s first life, Solene had only entered her life more often after Leah’s death. She had been one of her ladies-in-waiting and, if she had to be honest, her absolute favorite.
That was because Solene was fun!
She was the kind of person who was friendly to everyone and didn’t act stiff like most beasts. Just look at her smile! Primrose used to joke that Solene had to be a rare specimen among beastfolk because her facial muscles weren’t stiff from constantly frowning.
Whenever boredom struck, Solene would teach her traditional beastfolk games. Most of them required immense physical strength, which meant Primrose couldn’t participate in all of them, but it was still fun to watch.
Unfortunately, that joy had been short because Primrose had died too soon.
But now that Leah was out of the picture, she had the chance to meet Solene much earlier this time.
Hopefully, she wouldn’t turn out like Silas, who was secretly harboring resentment against her. If that were the case, Primrose might just give up on believing in kindness altogether.
"Yes!" Solene beamed, her grin so wide that her teeth flashed brilliantly. "I’m Solene Delauney! From now on, I’ll be in charge of keeping you safe here!"
Solene was a former Lycan knight of Noctvaris. She had once been a commander who led hundreds of soldiers under her command.
But she abruptly resigned from the military when she heard the heartbreaking news: her mother was gravely ill and might not have much time left.
It was a gut-wrenching choice—between her career and her family—but Solene ultimately chose to stand by her mother during her final days.
Some might call it a foolish decision, yet Primrose couldn’t help but be moved by Solene’s story.
Back then, she hadn’t thought much of Solene’s choice. But now, looking at the knight before her, she wondered just how much had it taken for her to walk away from everything she had built?
In a world where noble families rarely showed such deep emotional ties, this bond was something truly special.
Primrose herself had grown close to her father, but that closeness was born out of necessity, for they had been each other’s only family ever since her mother passed away shortly after her birth.
"Did His Majesty ask you to come here?" Primrose asked as she slowly descended the rolling staircase.
Solene nodded enthusiastically. "Yes! Last night, His Majesty sent me an urgent letter, ordering me to come to the palace immediately to ensure your safety."
She scratched her head, looking sheepish. "But, I’m really sorry ... It’s been so long since I last set foot in the palace that I got a little lost on the way for three hours."
Three hours of wandering? That actually was a whole expedition!
Once Primrose reached the ground, she blinked in surprise, only now realizing just how tall Solene was compared to her.
She wasn’t as tall as Edmund, but still ... Primrose had to tilt her head back just to meet her gaze. Otherwise, her eyes would only land on Solene’s perfectly round breast instead.
And that wasn’t fair at all!
Why did a Dame get to have such flawless proportions, while Primrose was stuck with something merely average?!
She also wanted to have bigger breasts!
[I didn’t expect Her Majesty to look this adorable.]
[She really reminds me of my pet rabbit back home ... hah, I already miss Chuchu.]
She had a pet rabbit?
Primrose had always imagined that a house full of knights would keep something fierce, like a tiger or some other wild beast, roaming in their backyard. But a rabbit? That was unexpectedly ... adorable.
"Don’t worry about that," Primrose said with a soft smile. "The soldiers here have been protecting me well ever since I stepped out of my chambers."
Maybe it was because of the little act she had put on last night, but the soldiers seemed more determined than ever to prove their loyalty.
It was as if they wanted to reassure their Queen that she would never be left defenseless again, that they would lay down their lives before letting anything happen to her in this palace.
"I heard about what happened to Lady Leah." Solene lowered her head slightly, her tone more solemn than before. "My condolences, Your Majesty."
Primrose let out a deep sigh, as if weighed down by sorrow. "I’m fine. His Majesty already sent Lady Leah into exile earlier."
She forced a bittersweet smile, playing the part perfectly. "Well, what can I say? Maybe she was right ... maybe I really am not good enough for my husband."
And let’s be honest, if there were a ’Husband of the Year’ award, Edmund wouldn’t even make the nominations.
After all, he didn’t even bother to get her a wedding ring!
She still wanted a ring!
"Your Majesty, don’t say that!"
Solene’s sudden outburst startled Primrose so much that she almost dropped the book she was holding.
"You’re perfect for His Majesty!"
Before she could even react, Solene suddenly grabbed her hands, and this time, the book really did slip from her grasp, landing with a dull thud on the floor.
"If anyone dares to say you’re not good enough, then don’t listen to them!" Solene’s voice was firm. "They’re too blind to see the greatness in you!"
[If anyone dares to hurt Her Majesty’s feelings, I’ll cut off their tongue immediately!]
Primrose blinked several times. She knew that Solene was a straightforward person, someone who never harbored ill intent toward her, not even in her first life.
But she hadn’t expected her to defend her this fiercely.
[Oh, shit! Did I cross the line by yelling at her? The soldiers reminded me that Her Majesty has a weak heart and I wasn’t supposed to shout at her!]
