Chapter 742: Chapter 472: Survival Assurance

Let Cai Ping and Hui Xiang guard outside the storeroom, Yun Jiao opened the door herself and went in.

Once inside, Yun Jiao didn’t linger and started moving things into the medicine store.

Everything had to be carried manually, Yun Jiao went back and forth until dawn, and still, she had only moved little more than half. A century’s accumulation of the Duke Mansion was indeed substantial.

Exhausted beyond words, she finally came out of the storeroom and returned to her room to rest.

After sleeping, she woke up in the afternoon, and the servant brought her lunch.

While serving Yun Jiao lunch, Hui Xiang whispered, "This morning, the lady sent Big Ya over to say the Emperor has dismissed the Vice Commander and replaced him with a Daoist as the Commander of the Palace Guard."

Yun Jiao’s chopsticks nearly fell, "Is the Emperor mad?"

Hui Xiang lowered her head; in this mansion, the Duke and Lady Wu, along with the Eldest Young Madam, dared to curse the Emperor, but people like them could only think it privately.

Yun Jiao hurriedly finished her meal. Previously, she thought Lady Wu made sense; no matter what, the Capital City could still hold for several days. Those towering and thick walls were not easy to breach.

Changing to a Daoist, does the Emperor truly think a Daoist can conjure soldiers from mere beans?

The former Emperor always favored Daoists, enjoying not only music, chess, and calligraphy but also practicing alchemy with them.

When the Emperor was still Crown Prince, either to please the Emperor or out of personal belief, he also worshiped a Daoist, surnamed Guo, as his master. 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖

The Daoist being appointed might be the Emperor’s teacher.

Yun Jiao felt time pressing; first, she went to the granary, locked the door, and with great effort, moved several bags of flour into the medicine repository.

The Capital City, surrounded for over a month with its population of a million, had already consumed much of its food supplies. If the city truly fell, the Jin Country’s two hundred thousand soldiers would still need to eat and drink.

In short, at this moment, everything else could be disregarded, but survival had to be ensured first.

Upon leaving the granary, Yun Jiao instructed the servant to relay to the kitchen to continuously make pancakes, cook fried rice, and turn all meat into dried meat; once each batch was ready, send it to her courtyard.

She returned to her room and began gathering the contents of her dressing box.

She glanced at the deeds and property titles in the box’s compartment, letting out a bitter laugh; if the city fell, these things would be nothing more than waste paper.

Despite her thoughts, Yun Jiao still packed them securely.

Next, she sat at the bedside, opened the cabinet, pulled out a box from inside which lay neatly Jiang Youzhi’s letters; Yun Jiao touched the envelopes and then packed them away too.

She placed her medicine kit into the storage space she carried, along with a set of Golden Needle.

After these tasks, the kitchen delivered the first batch of pancakes.

Yun Jiao had the servant place them in her room; she didn’t rush to put them away, instead, she headed to Mrs. Chen’s place.

Mrs. Chen appeared somewhat anxious; however, she was quite astute, having already changed into simple cotton clothes she had worn before.

Even Liu Lang and Third Ya were dressed too, wearing cotton clothes, although theirs looked a bit peculiar.

Mrs. Chen noticed Yun Jiao staring at Liu Lang’s clothes and explained, "It’s the servant’s attire I altered overnight."

Yun Jiao nodded, "In times like these, it’s best to dress inconspicuously."

She then placed a small bundle on the table, "Mother, here are gold leaves, gold nuggets, and silver scraps, find a way for everyone to hide some on their bodies; in chaotic times, it’s vital to have some wealth at hand in case of separation."

Mrs. Chen nodded, "I’ll sew them into the clothes soon."

Yun Jiao nodded, "No need to rush, mother; there are people in the mansion constantly monitoring the activity at the city gate; if there’s true danger, then we’ll leave."
