Chapter 41: Two Elves and a Fiend

Bang!

Taryn heard the sound of her front door getting forced open. She gave Daphne one last angry sigh before she walked over to her door, using her walking stick to keep herself stable.

Once she got into the part of the tavern where guests were entertained, she noticed that her front door had not just been forced open but was hanging loosely on its hinges.

But that was all, there was no one in the room.

’A thief?’ She wondered as she walked closer to the door to observe the extent of the damage.

When Taryn got close enough she noticed that it was as though the door was punched open. The locks had bent under the pressure, the wood had splintered and it was a second or two away from falling off.

Taryn heard a cracking sound and grabbed onto her stick tightly, half expecting that a thief would jump her from outside, but after some time, nothing happened.

Drip! Drip!

A wet slimy substance fell on her face and Taryn gasped, wiping off the substance with her hand.

"What is this?" She wondered disgusted at how slimy it was. That was when she heard another creak, this time from above her.

When Taryn looked above—

"Ahhhh, she screamed at the top of her voice and fell to the floor."

High above her, gripping the ceiling was a demon. It had long powerful claws that dug into the wood to keep it in place, black scaly skin rippling with taunt muscles and gleaming red eyes that pierced through the darkness.

It was humanoid but at the same time wrong, like a demon but somewhat different.

The demon snarled, spewing out more saliva just before it descended, falling right toward her.

Before the demon could latch onto her, the shadows around her surged forward, slamming into the beast.

Daphne appeared behind her, her expression hard and grabbed her shirt, pulling her back.

The demon shrieked, scattering the tables by its side to splinters and charged toward the two girls.

With a wave of her hand, Daphne unleashed another wave of shadows that once again knocked the demon to the other side of the tavern, shattering more furniture as it slammed into them.

’How did a demon get into the city?’ Daphne wondered as she took slow steps backward, shielding Taryn behind her.

"Go back inside and lock yourself in the room." She instructed Taryn.

Taryn did not protest, she hurried into the other room and slammed the door shut, clicking the lock in place for good measure.

Daphne kept her eyes on the demon and slowly began circling the room. Fighting demons was not a new thing to her, but it was also because she had fought so many that she knew every battle was a life or death situation.

This demon looked strong...

She had to be careful.

The demon lunged forward, charging straight at her with staggered movements. Daphne unleashed a wave of shadows to deter it but this time the demon was not knocked back.

It tore right through the shadows and slashed its claws right at Daphne’s eyes.

Daphne bent her body backward, watching as the claw slashed right above her, bringing with it a wave of wind just from the sheer force of the blow.

The demon’s fist came charging downward once more, hoping to pulverise Daphne, but using her shadows, she knocked herself to the side, crashing into the other end of the tavern.

The demon’s fist exploded against the polished wooden floor where Daphne had once stood, completely decimating the ground.

And then it turned, locking those menacing red eyes on Daphne.

Daphne sighed.

"You know..." She slowly got to her feet and stretched her shoulders. "I was having a pretty bad day already... I didn’t need you to make it worse."

The demon grabbed onto a chair and sent it flying in her direction, at the same time, Daphne lunged forward, sprinting towards the demon.

"No sympathy huh?"

Whoosh!

The shadow spikes rose from where the demon stood, tearing into its skin. The demon shrieked and swiped at Daphne’s feet, but she jumped above its attack and delivered a kick right to its face.

Saliva spewed out its mouth as well as blood...

Enraged, the demon shattered the spikes around it and reached out to grab Daphne but she was one step away, already curving around the demon’s back.

Boom!

Enforcing her strength with the shadows, in a failed attempt to mimic Wise, Daphne punched the demon right in the center of its back, knocking it forward and then her shadows wrapped around its legs, bringing it to the ground.

"Not so tough if you can’t land a hit right?" Daphne mocked.

She rushed over to it, raising her leg to stump its head to oblivion when—

Boom!

With a hit so fast that Daphne could not register the movement, the demon’s fist came crashing into her side.

The blow caused her body to twist in an awkward angle just before she was blasted right to the wall, causing the small tavern to rattle.

Daphne spat out blood, her vision swirling as she tried to focus.

Focusing was impossible, her ears were ringing and her body numb with pain.

She could not think clearly but she registered the demon’s fingers curling around her waist, she felt her body being lifted above the ground.

And she felt the wind blow against her as she was launched into the air.

Taryn stood in the employee’s room, her body pressed against the wall. She could hear disturbing sounds coming from the other side of the room...

Daphne was fighting the demon. She could have escaped and left her to fend for herself but she went out of her way to save her.

’Why did she protect her?’ Taryn wondered, the question ringing in her mind.

’Why would someone so terrible do something undoubtedly selfless?’

Taryn was so lost in thought that she didn’t notice when the sound of their clash ended...

Up until the door exploded open, shattering debris and splinters into the air.

Taryn covered her head with her arms to protect herself from the crash and then she stared at the figure that had broken through her door.

Lying on the floor with blood dripping down the side of her face was Daphne.

She had failed to take out the demon.

The echo of the demon’s step spread through the trashed tavern and right then and there, Taryn realized just how much she was screwed.

Death was coming.
