The Princess Kidnapping System Made Me OP-Chapter 48: The Next Day
Chapter 48: The Next Day
Wise woke up the next morning with a slight tingling in his chest, ’waking up’ was just the normal thing to say, but factually he had not slept.
Even after spending an hour organizing his scattered toilet to the best of his abilities, sleep still evaded him.
Admittedly, he did not know Rosalind for more than three days so it was not like his whole world was crashing down, but the torment she must have passed through was just too unfair.
Throughout the night he had been trying to wrap his head around the situation.
’Demonization...’
Something like this had been going on in this world and he was only finding out about it now?
Wise wanted answers, he wanted to know the sorcerer’s part was in this, he wanted to know what the phoenix card meant.
But all that was left after her death was silence, his only clues were that the sorcerer was involved and the phoenix card which had to mean something.
He rose up from his bed and took off his clothes, revealing a chiseled physique just before walking into the bathroom.
After taking a very long bath, Wise wiped his body with the inn-issued towel and changed his clothes.
For today he decided to go with something simple and light. A dark blue dress shirt tucked into black trousers, brown brogues and a pocket watch that had its golden chair attached to his trousers.
He gave his room one last glance and sighed before clicking the door shut behind him.
The streets of Teasei were as peaceful as always, Orks and foreigners were going about their day as usual, unbothered by yesterday’s appalling events.
But it was not that they didn’t fear demons, it was just the work of a very good cover up.
Currently, the rumor being passed around was that the battle was a show meant to psyche people up for the finals.
That was all it took to convince them, after all, it was easier to believe that than believe a demon had slipped past the city guards and gotten so deep into the city.
His match with the princess was postponed by a day, no doubt the queen was trying to ensure everything was perfectly safe before the grand finale.
Wise walked past the busy parts of town until he finally arrived at the area where the battle had happened.
He was no here to reminisce about last night, neither was he here to gather more clues, Akaza would have made sure to incinerate everything.
The reason he was back here was because of something he noticed yesterday...
The town’s clean up crew was hard at work, clearing out the debris and loading them onto carriages that would take them out of the city.
Wise walked past them and moved to a particular establishment, Taryn’s shop. Or at least that was what it once was, right now, it was just a pile of rubbish.
Taryn had taken out a loan to get this place and even risked her life in the tournament to keep it, what would happen to her now?
Wise had expected to find her here but she was nowhere in sight. As he was watching the building, an old Ork began strolling past him with a broom in hand.
"Good morning gramps."
The old man paused and turned to face him. "How are ya doing kid?"
’Kid?’
Wise cleared his throat. "These thrashed businesses, is the city going to compensate the owners?"
The old man frowned and squinted his eyes to stare at them. "Yeah, yeah the queen will give every citizen as much as it takes to rebuild."
The old man was about to leave when Wise held his shoulder. "Only citizens?"
Clack!
The man smacked Wise’s hand with his broom and frowned. "What part of what I said didn’t you understand?" Then he paused and glanced at Taryn’s shop.
A smug smile appeared on his face. "Ehehehe, you’re concerned about the elf aren’tcha?"
Wise raised a brow. "You know her?"
The old man shrugged. "Who wouldn’t? An elf sticks out like a sore thumb around these parts... especially when the festival is over."
"Now she—Ouch!" The old man suddenly exclaimed, dropping his broom and holding his back with both hands, his face twisted in a grimace.
Wise immediately got closer to him, his hands hovering around, unsure of what to do.
’Is he having a heart attack? Don’t die while I’m here old man!’
"Are you okay?!"
"B-B-B-Back!!! Pull my back!" He screamed out in pain, his eyes widening to the point that Wise could see the outline of his eyeballs.
Wise grabbed onto his shoulders, placed a knee at his spine and prayed.
’I hope this works!’
The old man’s eyes widened even more, a feat that was at least worthy of some sort of record and then he sucked in a sharp breath.
"Wait no, no! Don’t touch me! Let me dieeee!"
’What the hell?’
"You’re not going to frame me of murder old man!"
Pop!
"Ahhhhhhhhhh!" The old man screamed before letting out a satisfied sigh.
Gramps fell down to his knees and glared at Wise. "I swear, just now I saw the seven heavenly maidens!"
"Why did you save me you bastard shit headed round eared monkey!"
Wise stared at him blankly. "You ungrateful bastard—"
"Are you okay Grandpa?" A female Ork who was also part of the cleaning crew hurried up to them looking slightly concerned.
The old man stood, still glaring at Wise as he spoke. "I just strained my back, it’s nothing."
The woman frowned. "I told you to leave the cleaning to us, you’re too old for this."
"I’m not old!" Gramps argued and was about to pick up his broom when he froze.
"AHHHHHHHHHHHH! My back!"
"Gramps! The girl cried out, looking confused. She turned around, looking for anything or anyone that could help when she saw Wise sneaking away.
"Sir! Please help him."
’Damn it!’ Wise cursed inwardly before walking over to the old man.
Crack!
The old man sat on the floor, his arms crossed in annoyance, while the lady left to get a wheelchair.
The only reason Wise was still here was because she had begged him to watch over her till she returned. But the old man was proving to be terrible company.
After some minutes of uncomfortable silence, the man turned to stare at Wise. "About your lady friend... unfortunately, the queen’s compensation is only available for citizens."
"It’s a sad thing but that is just how things are..."
It was something Wise had expected to hear from the beginning, but after hearing it being confirmed, he felt bad for Taryn.
"Gramps, do you know where she lives?"
The old man’s gaze hardened. "How am I supposed to know? Do you think I go around stalking elves that I would have her address?!"
’Heh? Why was that the first thing that came to his mind?’
"..."
Seconds later, the old man scratched his head. "House 15, Garberry Street, just at the edge of town..."
’So he knew! Wait, why does he know??’
Wise gave the man a blank look. "I’ll see you around the gramps."
He could already see the woman returning with the wheelchair so there was no need to wait any longer.
But before he left, the old man called his attention once more. ƒrēenovelkiss.com
"I’ll give you some valuable advice because you helped me..."
He cleared his throat and looked straight ahead, his expression dark.
"Stay away from elves boy... their greed is as overwhelming as their beauty. They will lead you to bankruptcy."
’Why does it sound like he’s talking from experience??’ Wise wondered as he began his walk to Taryn’s place.
