The Quantum Path to Immortality-Chapter 172 - 171: First Day at the Academy 2
He smiled then, but it wasn’t warm. "If you meet these expectations, you will have access to resources most cultivators never see. Private instruction, ancient techniques, opportunities for glory. If you fail to meet expectations, you will be transferred to a different hall. I only keep students who show promise."
Elder Shen raised his hand, and scrolls materialized before each student. "This is your first assignment. You have one week to comprehend the technique inscribed within. It is a Stage 3 Continuum principle—advanced for first-years, but not impossible. Complete it, and you prove you belong here. Fail, and I will question whether you deserve your placement."
Aria picked up her scroll and unrolled it. The technique was called "Infinite Flow Meditation"—a method for understanding how countable infinity transitioned into uncountable infinity, bridging Stage 2 and Stage 3.
It was complex. Beautiful. And she could already see three ways to optimize it.
"Are there questions?" Elder Shen asked.
A brave student raised his hand. "Elder Shen, what if we can’t comprehend the technique in a week?"
"Then you weren’t ready for this hall." The Elder’s expression was merciless. "I gave you placement based on trial performance. You have one week to justify my decision. Use it wisely."
Another student: "Can we work together?"
"Absolutely not. This is individual assessment. Anyone caught sharing insights will be expelled from the hall immediately."
The room fell silent. The message was clear: sink or swim, and Elder Shen wouldn’t throw life preservers.
"You’re dismissed," Elder Shen said. "Return to your rooms. Study your assignments. Prove you deserve to be here."
Students filed out quietly, clutching their scrolls. The earlier excitement had been replaced by nervous determination.
In the hallway, Mira looked at her scroll with wide eyes. "This is insane. A week to comprehend a Stage 3 technique? I’m barely solid in Stage 2!"
"You can do it," Aria encouraged. "Just break it down into components. Don’t try to understand everything at once."
"Easy for you to say. You probably already figured it out, didn’t you?"
"The basic structure, yes. But I haven’t worked through the deeper implications yet."
Mira groaned. "Of course you have. I’m rooming with a genius. No pressure on me at all."
They returned to room 3-A. Other students were visible through open doors, already diving into intense study. The competitive atmosphere was palpable.
"Want to study together?" Mira asked hopefully. "I know Elder Shen said no sharing, but we could at least cultivate in the same space?"
"Sure. I’ll be in my chamber if you need anything."
Aria retreated to her personal cultivation chamber with the scroll and Lumie. The spirit beast had followed her, chirping curiously at the scroll.
"Let’s see what we have here," Aria murmured, settling into meditation posture.
She unrolled the scroll fully and began reading.
The Infinite Flow Meditation technique was elegant. It taught practitioners to perceive infinity not as discrete steps (countable) but as continuous flow (uncountable). The transition from Stage 2 Multiplicity to Stage 3 Continuum was subtle—like understanding the difference between integers and real numbers. Both were infinite, but one infinity was fundamentally larger than the other.
Aria dove into study, her mind processing the information rapidly. Father had taught her Stage 3 principles during their eighteen years together, so this wasn’t entirely new. But the technique presented concepts from angles she hadn’t considered before.
Hours passed. Through the wall, she could hear Mira occasionally sighing in frustration or muttering to herself.
By evening, Aria had comprehended roughly 89% of the technique. Not complete, but solid progress for day one. If she wanted she could utilize all her processing power of the Quantum brain to instantly comprehend the technique, but she just went with the flow. Its not a challenge.
Her token chimed—reminder about dinner.
She emerged from her chamber to find Mira sprawled on the common room couch, looking exhausted.
"How’d it go?" Aria asked.
"Maybe 15%? This is so hard!" Mira sat up. "How about you?"
"Made some progress. It’s challenging but interesting."
"Translation: You’ve already got it mostly figured out."
"Not entirely. There are subtleties I’m still working through."
Mira laughed tiredly. "You’re terrible at making me feel better. Come on, let’s get dinner. I need food and social interaction before my brain melts."
They headed to the main dining hall, which turned out to be enormous. Thousands of students filled long tables arranged by hall and year. The ceiling showed an illusion of the realm’s night sky—three moons and countless stars, many of which were actually distant dimensional pockets.
Food was served buffet style, with cultivation resources integrated into every dish. Nothing was merely for taste—everything provided some benefit, whether energy replenishment, law comprehension boost, or healing.
"It’s not as good as Sarah’s cooking," Aria noted, sampling a dish.
"Nothing is as good as Celestial Epicure’s cooking," Mira agreed. "But it’s free, so I’m not complaining."
They found a table with Torin, who waved them over.
"How’s your hall?" Mira asked him.
"Combat Mastery Hall. Less academic, more practical." Torin looked satisfied. "The Hall Master is a Master-level warrior with 81% Infinity Law. He’s gruff but straightforward. I think I’ll like it."
"Better than our Hall Master," Mira muttered. "Elder Shen is terrifying. He gave us a one-week deadline on a Stage 3 technique and basically said we’ll be kicked out if we fail."
"That’s harsh." Torin glanced at Aria. "But I’m guessing you’re not worried?"
"I’m taking it seriously," Aria replied diplomatically.
Other students from Infinity Comprehension Hall were scattered around nearby tables. Some were studying even while eating, scrolls propped beside their plates. Others looked stressed, discussing the assignment in worried tones.
One group was talking loudly about Aria.
"Did you see her during trials? Perfect scores in everything!"
"Rumor is her father is that new Sovereign. Elias Vance."
"Must be nice having a Sovereign personally train you. The rest of us have to struggle."
"Elder Shen didn’t seem impressed though. Maybe her trial performance was luck?"
Aria pretended not to hear, focusing on her food. But Mira had heard and looked annoyed.
"Want me to go tell them off?" Mira whispered.
"No. Let them think what they want. I’ll prove myself through results, not arguments."
"That’s very mature of you."
"Father taught me that reputation is built through consistent action, not defending yourself from every criticism."
"Your father sounds wise. Also scary. But mostly wise."
They finished dinner and returned to the Infinity Comprehension Hall. The building felt different at night—quieter, but with an undercurrent of intense focus as students cultivated behind closed doors.
Back in room 3-A, Mira yawned. "I’m going to study for another hour, then sleep. My brain needs rest."
"Good plan. Don’t overwork yourself."
"Says the girl who probably won’t sleep at all," Mira countered.
She wasn’t wrong. Aria intended to spend most of the night in deep cultivation, working through other techniques.
In her cultivation chamber, Aria settled back into meditation. Lumie curled up beside her, the spirit beast’s presence comforting and familiar.
Before diving into the technique, Aria touched Father’s necklace. She couldn’t contact him—he was exploring the realm, possibly in dangerous locations. But the necklace let her sense he was alive and well, which was enough.
"First day done," she whispered. "Classes start tomorrow. I’ll make you proud, Father. I’ll show Elder Shen and everyone else that I belong here."
Lumie chirped softly in agreement.
Aria closed her eyes and returned to studying the Infinite Flow Meditation technique. She had six more days to fully comprehend it. For anyone else, that might be impossible.
For her, it was just another challenge to overcome.
And if there was one thing Aria Vance excelled at, it was overcoming challenges.
Outside her window, the three moons rose higher in the night sky. The academy settled into nighttime rhythms—some students sleeping, others cultivating, still others training in the combat halls that never closed.
This was her new home. Her new life.
And despite the pressure, the challenges, the expectations—
Aria wouldn’t have it any other way.
She smiled and dove deeper into meditation, ready to prove she deserved her place among the academy’s best and brightest.
The journey was just beginning.
