The Quantum Path to Immortality-Chapter 187 - 186: Fear and Calculation
[POV: The Hierarchy - Main Headquarters, One Day Prior]
[Sector Three, Hidden Dimension - The Obsidian Sanctum]
ONE DAY AGO.
The alarm screamed through every corridor of the Hierarchy’s main headquarters.
Not a normal alarm. This was the death knell—the sound that meant soul tablets had shattered. Multiple soul tablets. Simultaneously.
In the Grand Archive, where thousands upon thousands of jade tablets lined the walls—each one bound to a Hierarchy member’s soul—twelve tablets cracked, blackened, and crumbled to dust within the span of a single second.
Twelve Sovereigns. Gone.
The entire base plunged into chaos.
Lower-level members rushed through dimensional corridors, voices raised in panic. Mid-level operatives activated emergency protocols, sealing sensitive areas and preparing for possible attack. Even the Sovereign-level enforcers showed visible tension as they gathered in strategic positions.
Because soul tablets didn’t just break. They were anchored to their owners through fundamental soul bonds that transcended distance and dimension. For one to shatter meant absolute death—body, soul, and every backup destroyed simultaneously.
For twelve to shatter at once meant something catastrophic had occurred.
In the Sanctum’s highest chamber—a space that existed in fifty dimensions simultaneously, accessible only to the organization’s true leadership—three figures materialized from separate dimensional folds.
The three Infinite cultivators who led The Hierarchy.
Azmodeus the Eternal, appearing as a middle-aged man with sharp features and eyes like frozen void. His specialty was soul manipulation and resurrection techniques—he could bring back the dead if even a fragment of their essence remained.
Verathos the Immutable, manifesting as an elderly scholar with a long white beard and hands that flickered through multiple temporal states. His mastery over time and causality was legendary—he could divine past and future with disturbing accuracy.
Selvaria the Absolute, taking form as a beautiful woman whose appearance shifted subtly between countless variations, never quite settling. Her dominion over spatial law and dimensional manipulation made her effectively omnipresent within their organization’s territories.
Three Infinite cultivators. Each one a being who had achieved 100% Infinity Law comprehension. Each one powerful enough to reshape continents or collapse dimensions with casual effort.
And all three looked genuinely disturbed.
"Report," Azmodeus commanded, his voice carrying absolute authority.
A Sovereign-level intelligence officer materialized, bowing deeply before speaking. "My lords, twelve soul tablets shattered simultaneously approximately three minutes ago. All twelve belonged to the reconnaissance team stationed at the Shattered Void Region. Their mission was observation of the Primordial Infinity Palace opening."
"Show me," Verathos said, extending his hand.
The officer presented a crystal orb—a recording device that captured the final moments transmitted by the deceased operatives before their soul tablets broke.
Verathos took the orb and activated it. Immediately, a holographic projection filled the chamber, showing fragmented images from twelve different perspectives.
The palace interior. Dimensional trials. A figure moving through them with casual efficiency.
Elias Vance.
The three Infinite cultivators leaned forward, watching with intense focus as the recording showed Elias completing trials, defeating guardians, entering the palace core. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶
Then the ambush. Twelve Hierarchy Sovereigns, perfectly positioned, formations activated, the trap sprung.
And then—
The recording shattered into static as an aura of such overwhelming magnitude manifested that the very dimensional framework recording it couldn’t maintain coherence.
For exactly 0.73 seconds, the recording showed nothing but raw power. Not Light. Not darkness. Just... pressure. Existence itself acknowledging that something absolute had manifested.
Then silence. All twelve perspectives dead simultaneously.
The recording ended.
The chamber was absolutely silent.
"By the infinite..." Selvaria whispered, her form flickering rapidly—an unconscious response to genuine shock. "That aura..."
"We felt it," Azmodeus said quietly. "Yesterday. That soul-wrenching pressure that made even the Infinity Realm itself screech in protest. We all felt it."
"I thought it was an Infinite-level ascension," Verathos added, his usually calm voice tight with tension. "Someone breaking through from Sovereign to The Infinite. That’s the only time such an aura manifests—when a cultivator transcends their previous limitations and forces reality to acknowledge their new state."
"But it wasn’t an ascension," Selvaria finished. "It was Elias Vance. He was simply... unleashing his full power."
The three looked at each other, and for the first time in billions of years of existence, they felt something they’d almost forgotten:
Fear.
"He’s at 99% Infinity Law," Azmodeus said, more to himself than the others. "Peak Sovereign, yes, but still technically below our level. Yet that aura..."
"Was comparable to our own," Verathos completed. "Perhaps even superior in certain aspects. The mathematical precision, the perfect integration—I’ve never encountered anything like it."
"Our subordinates really kicked an iron bucket this time," Selvaria said with dark humor. "They targeted Elias Vance directly."
"And now he knows we’re still active," Azmodeus added grimly. "Knows we targeted him. He extracted information from that team before killing them—I reviewed the timline now to see what happened. He has intelligence on our operations now."
The intelligence officer, still kneeling, trembled slightly. Even being in the presence of three Infinite cultivators discussing such matters was dangerous. Knowledge like this could get a Sovereign killed just for witnessing the conversation.
Verathos waved his hand dismissively. "Leave us."
The officer vanished instantly, clearly grateful for the dismissal.
Once alone, the three Infinite cultivators began discussing in earnest.
"We have a problem," Selvaria stated the obvious. "Elias Vance is now actively hostile to our organization. Based on the intelligence our team transmitted before death, he likely has locations of multiple headquarters. He’ll move against us."
"Can we fight him?" Azmodeus asked bluntly. "Three against one. All of us at 100% Infinity Law. Can we win?"
"Unknown," Verathos replied after a moment of calculation. "His techniques are unprecedented. That unique integration with Infinity Law—it’s not just novel, it’s revolutionary. He’s fighting with frameworks we don’t fully understand."
"But he’s still one person," Selvaria argued. "However powerful, however innovative, he’s a single cultivator. We have resources. Armies. Centuries of accumulated treasures and techniques. If we mobilize everything—"
"He destroyed twelve Sovereigns with a wave of his hand," Azmodeus interrupted flatly. "Deleted them from existence so completely that even I—with my mastery over soul and resurrection—cannot recover them. They’re gone. Not dead. Not sealed. Simply... erased from reality."
That sobering fact hung in the air.
"So we don’t fight him directly," Verathos said slowly. "We find leverage."
