THE REAL PROTEGE-Chapter 533: WHEN HEAVEN LISTENS
The Azure Dragon straightened.
The amusement faded from his countenance.
He glanced once more toward the sky.
Only for a short moment.
The air appeared normal.
Yet something in the air had shifted.
A subtle transformation lingered, just beneath the surface.
Once revealed, power could never be hidden again. Already, a vibration shook the courtyard, conveying whispers to distant ears. Far away, attention sharpened. In forgotten forests and veiled shrines, old presences stirred, curiosity awakened by the vibration of power. Some belonged to rival clans with shadowed histories; others to ancient spirits, bound to the land and ever watchful when old bloodlines called. Such shows rarely went unseen, sometimes drawing unwelcome eyes. The energy in the courtyard crackled, marking the close of one moment and the subtle beginning of another.
Destiny itself seemed to stir.
And somewhere above, heaven listened.
It had already turned its ear once that day.
The bamboo whispered again.
Now, the wind appeared to carry a question.
How many times can destiny be spoken aloud before it chooses to answer?
Before it answers?
The twins laughed, unaware.
Xiao Chi clapped happily.
Huang and Zhu remained respectfully composed.
Yet the adults exchanged meaningful glances.
The adults understood.
This wasn’t merely playful bonding between children.
This was alignment.
Dragon.
Phoenix.
Guardian.
Human.
And far beyond the courtyard,
An unknown force was beginning to take note.
The moment slowly passed, and the courtyard basked in glowing light once more. In this return to quieter rhythms, a sense of anticipatory pause wafted in the air.
But a heavier hush followed, draping the courtyard like a veil.
Ling Li watched the twins, their faces gleaming with success and innocence. Pride and worry tangled inside her, threaded through with something she could not name. The feeling was painfully familiar, a stirring she had previously known in her own youth, when dragon fire and promise first crossed her destiny. Across the courtyard, the Azure Dragon caught her gaze for a single heartbeat.
For a moment, memory returned — the night she and the Azure Dragon stood alone before the burned threshold of Zhen Monastery, defending its last relic while shadows gathered and old vows were tested. The trust forged in that crucible, and the silent secret they kept ever since, bound them even now. In that glance lay the memory of old trials and mutual secrets, of a time when she too had stood among the guardians.
In that silent moment, she felt his understanding and hope, combined with the weight of futures pressing close. For a moment, she wished she could shield her daughters from all that had begun, but the world’s eyes were already upon them. Ling Li pressed those worries into resolution. If danger circled closer, she would make certain no harm reached her daughters unchallenged. Patterns of careful preparation took shape in her mind: sending word to trusted friends, sharpening old defenses, and listening more closely to the winds for any sign of threat. Even if she could not hold back destiny itself, she would stand ready, so that when the moment came, her daughters would not face what lay in wait for them alone. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎
The guardian dragons’ radiance had barely diminished into the twins’ palms when a brief hush spread across the courtyard again, signaling another shift in the gathering’s mood.
This was not the same thick silence as before, not heavy with prophecy or the weight of heaven, but the gentle calm that lingers after power has been revealed.
Everyone had felt it.
The twin guardians were no mere ornaments of destiny.
They were real.
Ancient.
Awake.
And then, as if on cue,
of course,
It was Chin Chin who broke the silence itself.
She puffed out her chest, hands planted firmly on her hips, chin lifted with all the gravity she could muster.
"Big Brother’s dragon is much more beautiful and powerful than ours!"
There was no hint of jealousy in her manner.
Only pride.
It was absolute.
Unfiltered and bright as sunlight.
She turned to Shi Min and pointed upward as if his dragon might appear simply because she said so.
"Our dragon guardians are strong," she continued boldly, "but Big Brother’s dragon is the strongest!"
Even in their pride, the children had heard stories of greater dragons — ancient spirits glimpsed only in legend or whispered history. There was the Storm-Serpent Qiling, whose roar was said to shatter the Silver Mountains in a single night of thunder, and the Dawnscale, whose wings could eclipse the sun itself. Such dragons inspired both amazement and fear. Their power was assessed not just by their strength, but by the shadows they left behind.
Shi Min, who had been standing quietly with composed vigilance, nearly lost his balance.
"...I don’t have a dragon," Shi Min muttered flatly.
Chin Chin frowned at him as if he were being deliberately modest.
"You do!"
Kim Kim nodded firmly in agreement.
"Yes. The black one."
The courtyard stilled.
Four Eyes’ heart skipped.
Ling Li’s expression did not change.
The Azure Dragon’s eyes sharpened slightly.
Huang and Zhu cast a glance at each other.
"Black?" Xiao Chi echoed curiously.
Zhu leaned forward slightly, interested now.
A flicker crossed Shi Min’s face, subtle though unmistakable.
He had not spoken of it.
He rarely did.
And certainly not here.
Chin Chin continued proudly, unaware of the shifting atmosphere.
Chin Chin continued, her voice severing the quiet. "The one that appears when Big Brother trains alone! The one that makes the air feel cold!" At her words, an elder stirred on the veranda, eyes tightening. A hush passed through the gathering, as if those present — or something unseen — recognized what lay beneath her words, and did not welcome it.
Kim Kim added thoughtfully, "It doesn’t roar. It just... watches."
The bamboo leaves stilled.
Huang’s amber eyes narrowed thoughtfully.
"Describe it," he murmured gently.
Chin Chin raised both hands theatrically.
"It’s darker than night! Those scales look like they swallow light!"
Kim Kim nodded.
"And its eyes don’t glow. They’re just... there. Like they already know everything."
Xiao Chi’s eyes grew round.
"Why doesn’t it fly?"
Kim Kim answered immediately, as if this were common knowledge.
"It doesn’t need to."
The Azure Dragon straightened slowly.
He looked at Shi Min now.
Fully.
Measuring.
Shi Min kept composed, but his jaw tensed ever so slightly.
"I do not summon dragons," Shi Min said calmly.
Chin Chin huffed.
"You don’t summon it! It comes when you’re angry!"
Zhu raised a brow.
"Oh?"
Huang did not smile this time.
Ling Li finally spoke, her tone even.
"Chin Chin."
Her daughter immediately straightened.
"Yes, Mother."
Chin Chin blinked.
