“Nanzhou, how did you get here? I was going to bring it to you later.”
Jiang Nanzhou smiled, “I had nothing to do at home, Uncle Lu, there’s no need to be polite with me. Besides, Grandpa asked me to come and see how Auntie is doing.”
Lu Xianrun nodded in satisfaction, did not speak, and gestured slightly, leading him into the ward.
Following Lu Xianrun’s steps, Jiang Nanzhou immediately spotted Lu Jingqiu, who was asleep with her head down at the bedside.
Although he had only seen her briefly once before, now even with her back to him, Jiang Nanzhou recognized her at a glance as the girl who had fainted that day for some unknown reason.
She turned out to be Uncle Lu’s daughter, which was really unexpected.
Lu Xianrun had intended to wake his daughter but was preempted by Jiang Nanzhou gesturing to him; he quietly set down the fruit, and the two walked out.
Lu Xianrun handed the leave-of-absence letter for his daughter’s caregiving to Jiang Nanzhou, saying, “I’m sorry to trouble you with this, nephew. Your Auntie didn’t sleep well last night and just managed to fall asleep this morning.”
Jiang Nanzhou secured the letter and asked, “Is Auntie’s condition still stable? I have a friend at the hospital, a surgeon named Lih Huakun. I’ll tell him to take extra care of things here. If there’s anything you need help with, Uncle, don’t hesitate to ask him directly.”
“There’s nothing much, everything is well arranged here. We’ve caused you all a lot of worry by coming here.”
Jiang Nanzhou nodded, inquired a few more details about Auntie’s condition, and talked about other things. Before leaving, he still brought Lu Xianrun to meet Lih Huakun, as having someone in the hospital could make many things more convenient.
It wasn’t until Lu Xianrun had collected all the lab reports and seen the doctor that Zhou Lanping and her daughter woke up.
When Lu Xianrun returned, his face did not look good, and although there was no final diagnosis yet, the cancer was real and advanced, and the outlook did not seem optimistic.
“Dad, how is it, what did the doctor say?”
The previously somber look on Lu Xianrun’s face softened slightly, “The doctor hasn’t said anything, we’re waiting for the results. Probably another day of waiting.”
“Oh.” At that moment, Lu Jingqiu suddenly saw the fruit on the table and said, “Dad, has someone been here?”
Lu Xianrun nodded, “Grandpa Jiang’s grandson came by. He happened to be going to Ten-miles Village yesterday, so I thought it’d be faster for him to take your documents than to mail them.”
Lu Jingqiu was surprised, “That’s quite a coincidence?”
Lu Xianrun laughed, “There’s someone from your Educated Youth Spot, named Shen Mu, and he’s his younger brother.”
“Shen Mu’s older brother?” What a coincidence!
He had helped to deliver her things, and she should’ve thanked him in person, but unfortunately, she had slept too deeply.
Zhou Lanping saw that her husband’s face was bruised and insisted he go to the rest house to get some sleep.
She felt much better today; she had taken medicine in the morning and had an IV infusion, so by the afternoon, her spirits had lifted significantly. Jingqiu stayed in the hospital to accompany her to walk around, and by three or four o’clock, she fell asleep.
The next day, the doctor called both father and daughter into the office and spoke to them in a very calm tone about the most severe aspects of the condition.
They had prepared for the worst outcome, but reality left them even more despondent.
“Doctor, we want to have surgery, please arrange a time for us.”
Lu Xianrun wanted his wife to live well; as long as there was a glimmer of hope, he didn’t want to give up.
Lu Jingqiu opened her mouth to speak but before she could, her mother, who had somehow ended up outside the door without them noticing, rejected the idea: “I don’t agree.”
The appearance of mom made both her and dad unsure of how to face it; subconsciously, she didn’t want her mom to undergo surgery. Hearing her aunt describe her mom’s state after the previous surgery had become the pain she couldn’t forget for years.
Lu Xianrun looked at his wife’s determined eyes, opened his mouth, but the words that reached his lips couldn’t come out – he was afraid that once he started talking, his emotions would spiral out of control.
Mom pulled her and dad out of the doctor’s office without a word, leading them directly to the outside of a ward.
The wailing sounds from inside could be heard even before entering, startling Lu Jingqiu.
Zhou Lanping glanced at Lu Xianrun and said, “You go in and take a look. This person has the same condition as me. If you still think I should go through with it after seeing this, then I’ll follow your wishes.”
Lu Xianrun, listening to the howling inside, paused for a moment, but still went in silently.
Lu Jingqiu didn’t want to witness such oppressive, painful scenes, glancing inside before turning her head away.
After Lu Xianrun had stayed inside for a long while, when he came out, his eye sockets were sunken, and his face haggard as if he’d just endured a great torment. He took Zhou Lanping’s hand and said with a hint of melancholy, “We won’t do it, let’s not go through with the surgery.”
Upon hearing his words, Zhou Lanping, in contrast, smiled and with teary eyes said, “I know how painful this disease is, and I know my own pain all too well. I don’t want to add to this pain any more, even if it means I could live a few more months, I don’t want it.”
Lu Jingqiu’s face was already damp. She held her mom’s arm and said, “Mom, let’s not do it. We’ll go with conservative treatment. I’ve heard some doctors say, being in good spirits every day, eating well, sleeping well, and boosting immunity can keep the disease at bay.”
Zhou Lanping patted her daughter’s hand and smiled, “From now on, I won’t go to any hospital. I just want to live out my remaining days happily, Xianrun, is that okay?”
Lu Xianrun, a grown man, couldn’t help his eyes from reddening. He replied with difficulty to his wife, “Okay.”
In the afternoon, Lih Huakun also came by, and after looking at mom’s test report, he too suggested not going through with it.
With the current medical conditions in our country, this kind of disease… even after undergoing surgery it’s just a temporary suppression, nothing more. However, Lih Huakun got some medication from inside the hospital to help ease mom’s pain.
Lu Jingqiu went with him to get the medicine, and after leaving the pharmacy, she insisted on treating Lih Huakun to a meal.
Lih Huakun laughed and said, “There’s no need for a meal, if you want to thank me, thank my friend Nanzhou. He was the one who urged me to take extra care of your aunt.”
“Nanzhou?”
Seeing the puzzled look on Lu Jingqiu’s face, Lih Huakun was puzzled for a moment, then said, “Jiang Nanzhou. Your father should know him.”
Upon hearing the surname Jiang, Lu Jingqiu realized, “Oh, is it Old Master Jiang’s grandson? Regardless, both of you have helped us a lot, and we definitely owe you our thanks.”
Lih Huakun smiled, “I’m actually busy this time around. I have another surgery in a while. If there’s a chance for us to meet in the future, Nanzhou and I will surely treat Comrade Lu to a meal.”
Lu Jingqiu extended her hand with a smile, “Alright, it’s a promise.”
Lih Huakun paused for a moment, then busily shook her hand, “It’s a promise.”
The family of three left the hospital, Lu Xianrun driving the car aimlessly around the city, the situation with his wife leaving him directionless.
Beside him, Lu Jingqiu, who was hugging Zhou Lanping’s arm, appeared calm on the surface, but her heart was aimlessly drifting. She didn’t know what she should do to make her mom feel a little more relaxed in the coming days.
Zhou Lanping felt a burden lifted off her but looking at the sorrowful faces of her dearest, she touched her daughter’s forehead and said, “Xianrun, I want to visit Ten-miles Village, where Qiuqiu stayed. She kept saying how beautiful the scenery there is, and how many mountains there are. Our daughter has been there for over two years, and we’ve never visited.”
“Okay, let’s go and see, it’s not too far anyway.”
“Mom, the journey is bumpy, and I’m worried about your health. It’s just a small mountain village, there really isn’t much to see.”
Zhou Lanping shook her head, insistent on going. She just wanted to see for herself what her daughter’s past two years had been like, and if it was as good as she had said.
