Chapter 59 -58: Not Just Ordinary Friends
But she didn’t savor the moment for long, and hurriedly went upstairs, preferring her new desk over the handsome guy’s hand.
With such a large desk, she could easily draw big posters.
Lu Jingqiu spent half an hour in the study, fetching all sorts of brushes and papers, and placing them in their designated spots.
Then she poured herself a glass of water and continued with her studies.
In the morning, her dad had specially made her millet porridge and a scrambled egg with spring onions, fearing she wouldn’t get enough nutrition.
Recently, Jingqiu had been eating a lot of eggs, which were also their biggest household expense; they were going through seven or eight jin [a unit of weight] of eggs each month, if not ten. But this month, she and her dad had eaten more often in the canteen, and their meal tickets were running low.
In the morning, they would go to work without needing to ride their bikes.
Today, they divided their tasks – two comrades were responsible for publicity writing and cinema, while Yang Bo and the two of them started on the preliminary drafts.
It was quite tiring work all morning, and at noon, they stayed in the troops’ canteen for lunch. Lu Jingqiu ate a substantial bowl of braised noodles.
Luo Xinyue, looking at her, said disdainfully, “You have no image.”
“When one is hungry, the most delicious thing is to eat rice, who cares about image. Seeing how little you ate, just half a bowl, anyone would know you didn’t work hard this morning,” replied Jingqiu, taking a sip of water.
“Who says I didn’t work much? Did I not pass things to you all, or did I not mix the paint for you?”
Yang Bo sat silently eating his meal, not daring to raise his head, fearing any spill over.
He secretly lamented his lot; constantly bickering with his sisters at home and now with colleagues at work, was he destined to always live in a ‘nest of women’? It was too hard on him.
Since they were rushing the project, they didn’t rest after eating and continued working.
Around three or four in the afternoon, everyone finished and planned to return to their units.
After all, their regular tasks at the unit couldn’t stop.
Just as they were about to leave, Wu Zhengran, who had been out of sight for a long time, suddenly blocked her path.
“Lu Jingqiu.”
“Wu Zhengran? Shouldn’t you be at school?”
“Hey, our school delayed the term because of an expansion in enrollment, so classes won’t start until May.”
“Oh.”
“Comrade Jingqiu, I came to ask about Gao Qing. I looked for her several times, and she wouldn’t see me.”
“She must be at work at her unit. They’re rehearsing all the time, either rehearsing or preparing for rehearsal.”
“I know,” Wu Zhengran hesitated for a moment, then expressed with frustration, “I… I heard she’s got someone she likes, is that true?”
Pretending not to know, Lu Jingqiu said, “I really wouldn’t know that, you should ask her yourself. It’s been a long time since we hung out together.”
“Jingqiu, you must have noticed that I like Gao Qing. Help me, please. I’m going to study at a higher vocational college in Beijing, and I won’t be able to see her much in the future. Could you help me get in touch with her? I’d like to invite her to have a meal together.”

Lu Jingqiu pondered internally before hesitantly saying, “If I see her, I can pass along the message, but whether she agrees or not, that’s out of my hands.”
Wu Zhengran knew he had come to the right person when Jingqiu agreed, and a smile immediately spread across his face, “Old classmate, I knew you would help me, thank you. These are cherries picked from my granny’s house, the very first batch, just for you to try.”
The cherries at this time of year were quite expensive. Many families would barter things from their own yards for daily necessities. Lu Jingqiu quickly refused, “I can’t accept this.”
Once Wu Zhengran took something out, he never took it back, pushing it towards Jingqiu’s side, afraid she would refuse and he would lose his chance to see Gao Qing, “Old classmate, just take them. They’re grown at my own home, nothing special. Why be so formal with me? I’m going to rely on you for matters concerning Gao Qing.”
Hearing that he would rely on her made Jingqiu even less inclined to accept and she began to demur once again.
The two were bantering back and forth when Jiang Nanzhou, who was watching from a distance, thought Lu Jingqiu was being harassed. Hurrying over, he asked in a stern voice, “What are you doing?”
Suddenly, an unfriendly voice came from behind Wu Zhengran, startling him so much that he took a big step back, tossing the bag of cherries straight into Lu Jingqiu’s arms.
Turning his head to see Jiang Nanzhou’s military attire, coupled with his stern face and the intimidating aura he exuded, Wu Zhengran was so frightened that he hurriedly ran off.
This guy was normally carefree, but still a law-abiding citizen, and his greatest fears included police and military personnel.
Their authoritative presence always made him cower.
“Old classmate, don’t forget the favor I asked for. I’ll wait for your news,” he called out.
When Jiang Nanzhou heard Wu Zhengran’s words, he also came to a realization: he had misunderstood the situation.
“Comrade Jingqiu, he wasn’t here to trouble you?”
Lu Jingqiu looked at the cherries in her hand and responded, “He’s my high school classmate, and he needed my help.”
Jiang Nanzhou looked at the departing Wu Zhengran and awkwardly uttered an “Oh.”
Lu Jingqiu took a handful of cherries from her pocket and placed them in Jiang Nanzhou’s hand, saying, “My classmate said these are the first batch of cherries of the spring. Give them a try.” Then she grabbed another handful for him.
Jiang Nanzhou, holding the bright red cherries in both hands, was a bit stunned; he hadn’t come here to eat cherries.
“These little things, I don’t like them. You keep them,” he said.
Lu Jingqiu was surprised. “They’re really sweet. Try some. You can’t easily find these in the market. I have to head back to the office now, so I’ll be leaving first.”
There Jiang Nanzhou stood, cradling a big bunch of cherries, watching as Lu Jingqiu walked away.
Checking his left and right pockets, he was about to store the cherries when suddenly Lih Huakun burst out from behind him. With quick reflexes, he took two cherries from Jiang’s hand and popped them into his mouth, “Mmm, not bad, quite sweet.”
“When did you start loving to appear and disappear like a ghost?”
“It’s clearly you who was too captivated,” he said, reaching for a few more cherries.
Seeing the cherries in his hand depleting, Jiang Nanzhou objected and swiftly pocketed the cherries, “These are mine.”
“Oh, precious now, huh? I just heard someone say they didn’t like them,” Lih Huakun teased.
“That was me being modest,” Jiang Nanzhou shot him a look and took a cherry out of his pocket to eat.
Yeah, they were actually sweet.
“Hey, Nanzhou, you’re not falling for Uncle Lu’s daughter, are you?”
Preparing to walk back, Jiang Nanzhou spun around and warned, “I’m telling you, stop talking nonsense, there’s nothing going on.”
“Come on, Jiang Nanzhou, you always get all defensive and contrary when you’re nervous. We’ve grown up together since we were kids; I know you inside out. I’m aware of whatever ‘farts’ you’re trying to let out today,” Lih Huakun said.
Jiang Nanzhou replied, “Since when do you have that hobby?”
“Hmph.”
“What are you doing here? It’s not time to get off work yet,” Jiang Nanzhou asked.
Lih Huakun patted the medical kit on his back, “I’m on a call, just passing by, and I got to see quite the show.”
“What show? You’re just here for my cherries,” Jiang Nanzhou retorted.
“Nanzhou, didn’t your mom try to set you up with someone before the new year? What did you say? A man should establish his career before he starts a family. Such pretty words, but why does it all change when it comes to Comrade Jingqiu?”
Glancing sideways at him, Jiang Nanzhou stubbornly responded, “It’s no different.”
