Chapter 58: What have you been thinking?

A reasonable question, to be honest. It was because Cheon Areum was, in a way, their kin. Some gate monsters—especially S-Class entities—hesitated when faced with him. At times, they reacted with instinctive fear. Other times, they simply... recognized him. He bore the same negative energy they were born from. But that was not information he intended to disclose either.

Cheon Areum rested his chin lightly against his hand, gaze calm, just about to respond—when a voice cut in.

"He’s full of charms. How can you blame the monsters for going easy on him?"

Every head turned toward Lee Nari. The room went pin-drop silent. For a solid three seconds, no one even breathed too loudly. Lee Nari looked around at the frozen expressions, completely unfazed.

"What? No one here agrees?"

A few hunters abruptly found the surface of the conference table extremely fascinating. One man coughed into his fist. Someone else adjusted their watch as if it required immediate calibration. Even if some of them did agree—no one was suicidal enough to say it out loud.

Cheon Areum slowly lowered his hand from his chin and glanced sideways at her, eyes unchanged, though a faint smile tugged on his lips.

"Hunter Lee, this is an official meeting."

"I’m being official. Charisma is a legitimate combat advantage."

Across the hall, several hunters silently prayed the topic would move on before this turned into something far more awkward. But whether they admitted it or not, if monsters had aesthetic preferences...

Cheon Areum would indeed be a problem.

"His Class type specializes in control and sealing. If he neutralizes them before they escalate, the fight ends quickly."

He didn’t look at anyone in particular as he continued, but the subtle pressure in the air sharpened.

"Also, the primary focus of this conference is Cho Kihyun. Only questions regarding him will be addressed. We are not obligated to answer beyond what has already been explained."

The hunter from the Voidwalkers Guild pressed his lips together and leaned back, not having anything more to say in a professional setting. The conference ended on a peaceful note, and the room was almost empty, but Yoon Seoyul stayed seated, so Cheon Areum also didn’t move to get out. The last people to leave the conference room were Han Kakta and Lee Nari, who was being hauled away by her guild master.

After a while of silence, Cheon Areum poked Yoon Seoyul’s arm.

"Are we spending the night here too?"

"Can we talk for a moment?"

"Sure, why would we not?"

Supporting his face with a hand under his chin, Cheon Areum turned to Yoon Seoyul, who sat back in his chair and gazed at him with a hesitant look.

"What is it?"

"Areum, I don’t want to see you in danger. It’s the last thing I ever want."

"That’s it? I was starting to get nervous for no reason..."

Cheon Areum mused, brushing it off, but Yoon Seoyul continued talking.

"And even less do I want to ever harm you myself."

"???"

"So in the future, if I ever put you through any kind of hurt, I want you to fight me without holding back anything."

"What are you talking about?"

Concerned, he put his hand down flat on the table and frowned.

"I have no problem dying by your hands. I need you to know that you can kill me if it comes to it. If Kihyun decides to activate his skill on me and control me to go against you, I need you to be able to fight against me fairly."

"Don’t speak anymore. I’m getting irritated."

Cheon Areum got up from his seat to walk away, not wanting any part of this conversation. Yoon Seoyul stopped him by grabbing his wrist.

"Areum. Listen carefully—"

"I’m not hearing it! Why would you even think of that?!"

"Between me and Rian."

Yoon Seoyul began to get his attention.

"You need to choose Rian. If I lose to Kihyun’s control and attack you or Rian in the worst-case scenario, you need to choose Rian and yourself."

"You won’t lose to Kihyun. You can deactivate my best skill, right?"

Not realizing it, Cheon Areum’s tone had started to sound a bit desperate as he spoke.

"He’s far inferior to me in experience and strength. You won’t lose!" 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

Yoon Seoyul listened quietly to him, but he was still skeptical.

"That’s because it’s you, Areum. You’re not as unkind as you think you are. Kihyun, on the other hand, is the opposite. He is staying true to his goal even after seeing the difference in your and his strength. He won’t hesitate or give me an opening to deactivate his skill."

"Then... practice with me. I can try my best to keep you under control. Try and see if you can break through. If you can’t, we will practice and do it until you can. Let’s go to the training room right now."

Taking Yoon Seoyul’s hand with his sweaty palm, Cheon Areum raised their hands to drag him, but Yoon Seoyul didn’t move.

"Your core is too damaged. There is a high chance it will crack if you activate your skills and start taking artificial energy or even energy refills from Han Kakta. You need to let it heal first."

Calmer than him, Yoon Seoyul explained it to him, but Cheon Areum was aware of it too, yet he had suggested an impossible solution in his anxious state. Yoon Seoyul brought their raised hands to his lips and kissed Cheon Areum’s wrist point, releasing his pheromones to steady him.

"You can’t be reckless this time around, Cheon Areum. We need to think of every possibility and prepare beforehand. I know you hesitate when it comes to me. That’s why I need to tell you this now. Don’t hesitate. If the last option falls to you having to kill me... do it. If you hesitate and let me hit you, I won’t be able to live with that either, so this is selfish of me for having you do it, but do this favor for me. Kill me if you have to."

"Pregnant omegas have a hard time if their alpha dies."

"I’m sorry."

"Who will drive me around then? Who will cook for me? I don’t want to smell anyone else’s pheromones!"

As Yoon Seoyul had said, this was truly selfish of him. Cheon Areum gritted his teeth, staring down at him and meeting his gaze with a blurring vision.

"I didn’t want you to think like this. I only said it before it’s too late, so you don’t have to think of any of this stuff. For now, I am here to do all those things for you."

Yoon Seoyul slowly got up from the office chair and kissed his forehead gently before hugging him and patting his back tenderly.

"This is just a possibility, Areum. I won’t give up on you that easily either."

With a tear-stricken face, Cheon Areum’s expression abruptly turned cold and emotionless. As his jaw touched Yoon Seoyul’s shoulder, he stopped gritting his teeth, and no new tears formed in his eyes. A rage he had never felt burned through him until his skin seared with it.
