Chapter 220: The Proposal(3)

As she stepped on the narrow stairs that were steep, she realized something. She could see her darling husband’s leering eyes without even looking at him.

Maybe he realized that she knows what he is up to, he whispered, "Yellow... Not red, not black, not anything sexy. but plain yellow!" His voice reeked of disappointment.

She had forgotten that she was wearing a short dress and her husband degenerated into a high school jerk! How awesome!

She shook her head and placed her hands on her butt to mitigate the effects. But Liam found that was nothing and kissed her hand. She felt little flutters in her abdomen as his lips pressed to her hand.

Rory rolled her eyes. It is what it is. He’s seen everything on her body possibly from every angle. What would her little hands do?

"I would have worn red lacy ones if you told me you were coming," she said taking her hands back.

Only after she didn’t hear his reply for long, that Rory realized why he might be shaken by that statement. And it was time for her to be shocked that she could make that statement without thinking deeply.

Did she mean it? Mostly...Absolutely!

She turned and looked at him. He smiled at her. He didn’t know if she was ready to sleep with him already, but he could sense her closeness. She is kissing him from her heart, and she doesn’t mind his kisses. Not so long ago, she would wince and yelp at that prospect.

And she was not making jokes of that sort so easily.

"You nasty little weasel!" Rory pinched his nose as she remembered something. "You always walked behind me when I was wearing skirts back in high school. Were you planning on taking a peek, then?" she asked.

She used to think that he did that to protect her from other jerks, but now that she looks back, he is not that different from those jerks, right? Well, he was different because he had feelings for her. So...

"Oww, that hurt," Liam rubbed his nose. "Yes, I wanted to see what kind of underwear you wore. What’s wrong with that?" He said puffing his chest with pride. Shortly after, his eyes filled with disappointment. "But you never showed me...And," he leaned to her face. "You don’t know how many jerks made bets on you. I didn’t want them to succeed."

"Bets?" Rory raised her brows as she was interested. "What kind of bets?"

Liam glared at her. What should he say? The boys made all sorts of bets about her. It used to be his full-time job to protect this dud who never cared about anything happening around her.

"Were you protecting me, love?" she grabbed his cheek and kissed his forehead. "Thank you."

She then turned and started walking up the stairs. Thinking about their past made a smile linger on her face. He was always by her side. And although she never thanked him, he was always protecting her in his own way.

Maybe it was just jealousy. But he turned that into a protective instinct rather than ignoring her. He stayed with her and protected her. He always made her feel safe.

Liam almost fell backward by her kiss. He didn’t know why a forehead kiss makes him all giddy. He loves it better than... Well, not better than say, a French kiss. But rather than a smooch, he likes a forehead kiss more.

They reached the open space. Rory took in the fresh air rubbing her arms. She should have worn her coat as Liam asked her to. But she liked the cold around her.

"Fizzy, will you ask them to turn off the lights around?" Rory asked Liam who was standing by her side. She couldn’t see the stars because of the fairy lights.

"Is it okay? It might turn very dark," he said. The crescent moon won’t give out much light. He didn’t want her to end up getting scared.

"No, I want to see the stars," Rory said.

As Liam went downstairs to inform the butler, Rory went and sat on the stone railing. She did some warm-up exercises while sitting and she got warmer. Within some time, the lights went off. As her eyes got adjusted to the darkness, Liam came back with his phone torch on.

"Can you smell it, Fizzy... the air is so pure," she took a deep breath. It refreshed her.

"Are you cold?" Liam asked.

He was wearing his shirt alone and not even his jacket. She wondered what he will do if she said that she is cold. Will he take off his shirt and offer her? probably not. He’ll go downstairs and get her a blanket. He’s thoughtful like that. "No," Rory shook her head.

Liam turned off his torch and sat on the floor near her feet even though Rory asked him to sit with her. He preferred to look at her face at that angle that night. Liam massaged her calves and Rory left him to his devices.

There was silence between them if not for the occasional sound of bugs whittling the air. She couldn’t stop thinking about the memories of their past. She smiled and smiled. And those memories made her warm.

"Did you enjoy today, Cherry?" Liam broke the silence.

"Very much," Rory looked at him. "Come sit with me. It’s hard to look at you if you are sitting down there," she gave him her hand.

He held her hand and kissed it. "No, let me stay here, please..." he covered her hand with his big hands.

What’s that about? Why is he this cute?

"Okay," she agreed.

"Did you feel like a girlfriend?" he asked. But he knew it would be too much to ask of her after everything they’d been through.

"What?" Rory did not understand him.

"Never mind..." Liam chuckled.

"No, tell me!" Rory wanted to know what he meant. It seemed important for him. She wanted to listen.

"I wanted you to have the experience of a dating couple. Not a married one..." Liam pressed his forehead on her hand.

Rory thought about it, and only then she understood. "But I ruined it, didn’t I?" she chuckled awkwardly. "Sorry."

When she was in university, she used to get jealous of those "dating couples" who would spend their money recklessly with no planning for the future. She was jealous of the girls who received expensive gifts from their boyfriends. She fought with Liam because she didn’t get to enjoy that feeling of getting courted.

Today, Liam tried to do that. He even tried to surprise her by revealing that he owns a castle. But all she did was think about her expenses book. All she did was think and act like a wife and not as a girlfriend.

"You did not ruin anything... You are my wife for six years and... Cherry, thank you for being so patient with me all this time," he looked at her. "All I’ve ever given you are promises and nothing more substantial. I broke many of the promises that I made and hurt you. And yet you..."

"Do we have to talk about it all again, Fizzy? There is no need for that," Rory patted his hand. "How can you say that you did nothing? These past few months... I was the one who hurt you more. If it was anyone else in your place... They would have let me. But you..."

"But it~"

"Ah, let’s call it even," Rory waved her hand.

Liam tried to speak more, but Rory covered his mouth. "Let’s talk about something different. Like the..."

As she was speaking, she looked up at the sky. Liam was looking at her eyes and, in her eyes, he saw the dance of a thousand lights.

Northern lights!

Liam looked up. He didn’t even know if it was the season. But... "Wow! That looks amazing, isn’t it?" he said.

"Yeah..." Rory saw the colors dance on the sky. "Blue... It’s kind of rare to see blue lights... there’s purple too... green is common..." she looked around.

Rory, who was busy taking pictures of everything, forgot that she even had a phone. She went back to the days she used to wander around in the village and get amazed by the sights around her.

"Are you seeing this, Fizzy? It’s so pretty, isn’t it? I am so glad you and I are seeing the same sky right now. I am so glad..."

They looked at it for some time. The lights lasted longer.

"Do you know why I was named Aurora, Fizzy?" she asked. She’s told Ellie that story a hundred times. But did she tell Liam? She didn’t remember.

"No, tell me," Liam said.

Of course, he remembered that story. He wanted to hear it once more. He kept the ring back in the box. And he should find new words to say to her.

"My mother had a tough birth with me. She went to the hospital after her water broke in the afternoon. But even after midnight, I was not coming out. The doctors were advising on a C-section. But then after some time, my mother started dilating and... I came out... at 3 a.m.. And just as I came out, the sky lit up! Blue lights... My father would tell me that he had never seen a prettier Aurora as the ones he saw in my eyes that day... And so, he named me Aurora."
