Chapter 44: The Obsidian Forge

The city of New Astora was a masterpiece of "Unfinished Logic." Its buildings were shells of white marble that flickered at the edges, awaiting the data required to solidify their foundations. The streets were paved with crushed quartz that hummed underfoot, vibrating with the latent energy of the World-Core. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

Kaelen stood at the center of what would become the Industrial District. Beside him, the First-Born sat cross-legged, staring at a massive pile of raw iron, silver-glass, and the shattered remains of the UPG Eraser Droids.

[CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS: 12%]

"Kaelen," the boy whispered, his violet eyes reflecting the scrap metal. "The metal is sad. It doesn’t know what it wants to be."

"It wants to be a weapon, kid," Kaelen said, his hand resting on the boy’s shoulder. "But in this world, a weapon isn’t just a piece of sharp metal. It’s a [Physical Command]. I need you to focus. Don’t think about the shape. Think about the function."

Kaelen stepped toward the scrap. He didn’t use a hammer. He raised the Sovereign’s Staff and slammed it into the center of the pile.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: TERRAIN-EDIT (REFINED)]

[COMMAND: SMELT / ALLOY / PURIFY]

The scrap metal liquified instantly, turning into a swirling vortex of molten silver and black slag. But the heat wasn’t thermal; it was a "Processing Overload." The air around the Forge began to smoke as the raw data of the metal was stripped of its old UPG "Standardized" properties.

"Elara! The Catalyst!" Kaelen barked.

Elara stepped forward, holding a vial of the "Violet Rain" she had collected from the silver grass. She poured the liquid into the vortex. The molten metal turned a deep, bruised purple, sparking with the "Belief Data" she had infused into the water.

"Lucius, the Tempering!"

The former General, now Level 5 after training with the refugees, stepped up. He didn’t have his sun-fire, but he had his [Warrior’s Intent]. He thrust his hands toward the vortex, projecting his sheer willpower into the liquid. He wasn’t giving it heat; he was giving it "Sharpness."

[STABILITY: 88%]

[DATA VOLUME: HIGH]

Kaelen reached into the swirling purple liquid. His Void-Skin glowed a blinding white as it protected his arm from being erased by the raw energy. He felt for the center of the mass, grabbing the "Logic-Core" he had envisioned.

With a roar of effort, he pulled.

Out of the vortex emerged a blade that looked like a shard of the night sky. It was a longsword, but its edges were serrated with "Data-Teeth" that flickered in and out of existence. The hilt was wrapped in the same mercury-like fabric as his suit.

[ITEM CRAFTED: THE VOID-REACHER (RELIC GRADE)]

[Requirement: Null-Sovereign]

[Effect: Ignores 50% of ’System’ Armor. Each strike ’Siphons’ 5% of the target’s Mana.]

[Passive: ’Glitch-Cut’ — Attacks have a 10% chance to cause a status-error in the target.]

Kaelen swung the blade. The air itself seemed to tear, leaving a thin, violet trail that lingered for several seconds.

"It’s perfect," Kyra whispered, appearing from the shadows of a nearby pillar. "But we have a problem. The ’Forge’ isn’t the only thing heating up."

Kyra led Kaelen and Elara to the city’s central fountain—the "Aura-Well" that supplied the refugees with drinking water and mana-replenishment.

The water, which should have been a clear, pulsing blue, was streaked with veins of oily black sludge. It looked like ink dropped into a glass of milk, but as Kaelen looked closer with his [Logic-Sight], he saw the truth.

The sludge wasn’t liquid. It was a [Lich-Virus].

[WARNING: BIOLOGICAL DATA-CORRUPTION DETECTED]

[Source: External Rift Injection]

[Effect: ’Zombification’ of Physical Assets.]

"One of the refugees... he drank from the well ten minutes ago," Kyra said, her hand on her khukuri. "He’s in the infirmary. He’s not... himself."

Kaelen sprinted to the infirmary, a tent made of silver-silk. Inside, the man—the former janitor who had spoken to Kaelen earlier—was convulsing on a cot. His skin had turned a sickly, pixelated grey. His eyes were wide, but instead of pupils, they displayed a scrolling wall of red "ERROR" text.

"Kill... me..." the man rasped, his voice sounding like static. "The... Code... is... cold..."

Suddenly, the man’s jaw unhinged further than humanly possible. A burst of black, needle-like shards erupted from his throat, aiming for Elara’s face.

Kaelen moved instantly. [The Void-Reacher] flashed.

He didn’t cut the man. He cut the shards out of the air. The moment the blade touched the black needles, they didn’t break—they Uninstalled. The black sludge evaporated into harmless grey mist.

"He’s a ’Trojan Horse’," Kaelen growled, his eyes glowing with fury. "The Board isn’t attacking us with soldiers. They’re trying to turn our own people into ’Corrupted Assets’."

[WORLD EVENT: THE PLAGUE OF NEW ASTORA]

[Objective: Purify the Aura-Well and quarantine the infected.]

[Time Remaining: 04:59 until ’Outbreak’ Phase.]

"Elara, use the staff! You have to ’Sanitize’ the well using the Cathedral’s Belief Data!" Kaelen commanded. "Kyra, find every person who drank from that well in the last hour. If they show signs of ’Pixelation,’ pin them down. Don’t kill them—just hold them!"

"What are you going to do?" Elara asked, her hands already glowing with purifying light.

Kaelen looked up at the broken violet moon—the rift. "I’m going to find the ’Antivirus’. And to do that, I have to go back into the ’Old World’ for a second."

"Kaelen, no!" Lucius stepped forward. "If you go through that rift, you’re a Level 27 ’Null’ in a Level 100 Corporate Zone. They’ll delete you before you hit the ground!"

"They won’t see me," Kaelen said, his Void-Skin rippling as he activated [Phasing]. "I’m not going as a King. I’m going as a ’Ghost’."

Kaelen looked at the First-Born. "Kid, give me a ’Bridge’. Just for ten seconds. Open a hole in the sky."

The boy nodded, his face solemn. He raised his small hands, and the Indigo sky began to tear. A jagged, black-and-white portal opened directly above the Forge.

Kaelen didn’t hesitate. He jumped.

Location: New Eden – UPG Medical Research Wing

Kaelen landed in a sterile, white hallway. The gravity felt heavy, the air smelled of bleach, and his HUD flickered with a hundred UPG "Unregistered" warnings.

[WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED ENTRY]

[LOCAL SECURITY RESPONSE: T-MINUS 30 SECONDS]

He moved like a shadow, his Void-Skin blending into the clinical white walls. He reached the central laboratory, where a group of scientists were staring at a petri dish filled with the same black sludge he had seen in New Astora.

"The Lich-Virus is performing better than expected," one scientist said. "It converts biological matter into ’Slave-Code’ in under six minutes. New Astora will be a graveyard by morning."

"And the ’Antivirus’?" another asked.

"Stored in the ’Cold-Vault’ at the end of the hall. But it’s irrelevant. Thorne would never risk coming back here—"

Kaelen stepped out of the shadows behind them, [The Void-Reacher] resting on the scientist’s shoulder.

"You really should stop underestimating the ’Ghost’," Kaelen whispered.

The scientists froze. They didn’t even reach for the alarm. The sheer, cold pressure of Kaelen’s "Null" aura was enough to lock their nervous systems.

Kaelen grabbed the ’Cold-Vault’ keycard from the lead scientist’s belt. He didn’t kill them—he didn’t have the time. He ran for the vault, grabbed the glowing blue canister marked [RECOVERY_V3], and sprinted back toward the landing zone.

[SECURITY DETECTED: AUTO-TURRETS ENGAGED]

The hallway erupted in gunfire. Kaelen didn’t dodge; he used the Void-Reacher to "Glitch-Cut" the bullets, turning them into harmless pixels before they touched him.

He reached the spot where the bridge was closing.

"Kid! Pull me back!"

A violet hand made of pure code reached through the ceiling. Kaelen grabbed it and was yanked upward just as a squad of UPG Paladins burst into the lab.

Location: New Astora – The Aura-Well

Kaelen slammed back into the silver grass, the blue canister clutched to his chest. He was bleeding from a dozen small scrapes, and his MP was at nearly zero.

"Elara! Catch!"

He threw the canister. Elara caught it in mid-air and smashed it into the black-streaked water of the fountain.

A wave of brilliant blue light exploded outward. The black sludge didn’t just disappear; it was Rewritten. The "Lich-Virus" was converted into a "Growth-Buff."

[QUEST COMPLETE: THE PLAGUE REVERSED]

[LEVEL 27 -> 30]

[BONUS: The citizens of New Astora have gained ’Virus-Resistance’.]

Kaelen collapsed into the grass, gasping for air. The First-Born sat next to him, patting his head.

"You’re a good player, Kaelen," the boy said.

Kaelen looked at his new sword, then at the sky. He was Level 30. He had a weapon that could cut the system, a city of resistant citizens, and a World-Editor at his side.

"The Board is going to be pissed," Kaelen smirked.

"They’re more than pissed," Kyra said, pointing to the horizon.

Out of the silver grass, a new figure was approaching. It wasn’t a robot or a soldier. it was a tall, thin man in a tailored suit, carrying a leather briefcase. He looked completely out of place in a fantasy world.

[ENTITY DETECTED: THE ADJUSTER (LEVEL ???)]

[Class: CORPORATE LAWYER / REALITY-AUDITOR]

"Mr. Thorne," the man said, his voice smooth and terrifyingly polite. "I’m here from the Aethelgard Legal Department. We believe you are in possession of ’Proprietary Assets’ that belong to our shareholders. Shall we discuss the terms of your surrender, or should I begin the ’Liquidation’?"
