The Spare's Second Chance in Apocalypse-Chapter 37: Ch : The Vale Mansion- Part 4
Chapter 37: Ch 37: The Vale Mansion- Part 4
The steel door of the bunker slammed shut behind Selene as she led the twins inside.
The underground shelter was dimly lit, the flickering emergency lights casting eerie shadows on the walls. The air felt heavy with tension.
No sound came out of that place at first, but then, people noticed the people walking inside and chaos erupted around the place.
The moment the bodyguards saw the twins, their expressions changed.
"Young Masters!"
One of them cried, rushing forward. His arms warped themselves around the twins to capture them into his embrace.
He was just the first, but soon more guards followed, falling to their knees as if they had just witnessed a miracle. They grabbed Noah and Nora, their voices full of fake relief.
"We thought we lost you!"
"We were so worried!"
"We wanted to help, but we couldn’t!"
These people were making a show out of it to appeal to the pair so that they could demand money from their parents and show that they were useful.
Selene stood back, watching the pathetic display with an unimpressed look.
These were the same guards who had abandoned their posts the moment danger struck. Now, they were acting as if they had been searching tirelessly for the twins.
It made her sick.
’I need to get out of here. I feel like I’ll get sick if I stay here for any longer.’
She turned to leave, wanting nothing more to do with this place. But before she could take a step, a firm hand grabbed her shoulder.
"Where do you think you’re going?"
One of the guards asked, his tone harsh. She could instantly tell that this man was trouble.
Selene didn’t turn around.
"Leaving."
The guard tightened his grip.
"Not happening."
Selene finally faced him, her eyes cold. freёweɓnovel.com
"Excuse me?"
"The Master and Mistress ordered us to bring you back if we ever found you. "
The man said, his tone smug.
Selene clenched her jaw. Of course, they did. Even in the middle of an apocalypse, they still wanted to control her.
"I’m not going back."
She stated.
The guards exchanged glances, clearly not happy with her answer.
"You don’t have a choice. You’re coming with us. Don’t make me use force, kid! You won’t like it."
One sneered as he circled her.
Selene raised a brow. She was not intimidated by these fools. She regularly dealt with Ethan and compared to him, these people felt easy to deal with.
"And if I say no?"
Another guard muttered under his breath.
"She’d make a good shield if things go south."
Selene froze.
So that was their plan. It was always the plan when Selene was concerned.
It was nice to see that some things never changed, no matter what. It made hating these people far easier for her.
Selene was nothing more than a disposable barrier between the twins and danger.
Disgust burned in her chest.
She turned to walk away, but the first guard lunged at her, trying to grab her.
Big mistake.
Selene moved on instinct. She twisted to the side, grabbed his wrist, and flipped him over her shoulder. She was not going to show him any mercy.
He hit the ground hard with a loud thud.
The other guards gawked at her in shock.
Selene exhaled sharply, stepping over the groaning man.
"I’m done playing this game. I brought the twins here. That’s all I came to do."
She said.
Without another glance, she strode toward the exit.
Then the door exploded.
A deafening screech filled the bunker as debris flew in all directions.
Selene’s heart pounded.
She knew that sound.
A monster had found them.
The thing forced its way inside, its grotesque limbs twitching unnaturally. Its glowing eyes locked onto its target.
Noah and Nora.
Selene moved before she could think.
Her knife was in her hand in an instant. She threw herself between the twins and the monster, raising her blade just as its claws slashed downward.
Steel met bone with a sharp clash.
The impact sent tremors up Selene’s arm, but she held firm. Her shoulder felt that impact, but it was not hurt.
Behind her, the guards stumbled back in terror. Some reached for their weapons, but their hands shook too much to be useful.
Selene ignored them.
She twisted her knife and slashed, cutting deep into the creature’s arm. Dark, foul-smelling blood splattered across the floor.
The monster screeched, recoiling in pain.
But it wasn’t done.
It lunged again.
Selene ducked low, sliding beneath its attack. She slashed at its legs as she moved, another burst of blood following her strike.
She needed to finish this quickly.
She gripped her knife tighter, preparing for the final blow—
Then something yanked her back and it caused her shoulder to throb. She was sure that it was dislocated due to how hard it was being gripped.
One of the guards had grabbed her shoulder, injuring her further.
’Darn it! I knew I should have worked on my durability. But that darn skill refused to raise itself up.’
Her breath caught as she was pulled off balance, her knife slipping from her grasp. It hurt a lot and she immediately turned to look behind her in anger.
"You—!"
She started, but she never got to finish.
The moment of distraction was all the monster needed.
It lunged again—straight for the twins. The pair was frozen in place and Selene had a moment where dread filled her being.
Selene’s stomach dropped as she watched the monster lunge toward the twins. Her mouth yelled out the sound, but her ears were not able to hear anything she said.
"No!"
She screamed, struggling against the grip holding her back. She knew she needed to move and get to the twins, but it felt difficult to do.
Noah and Nora were frozen in fear.
They weren’t going to move in time.
The monster’s claws stretched toward them.
Selene saw it happen.
She wasn’t close enough.
And she wasn’t fast enough to stop it.
