Chapter 12: The Last Gate

"Wasn’t the Golden Golem here earlier?"

"Yes, it shouldn’t have left yet."

"Why are there no signs of battle?"

"Was it killed by some kind of special attack?"

"By the way, I heard a very loud owl earlier. That didn’t sound normal."

"You mean that owl killed the Golden Golem?"

"Maybe!"

They discussed among themselves as Leonardo walked toward the gate.

It hadn’t become a teleportation gate yet.

He stepped inside with Ellie.

Leonardo was instantly stunned.

He appeared inside a bright golden chamber.

It was radiant and luxurious.

The corpse of the Golden Golem lay on the ground, and above its chest floated a golden gem the size of a coin.

A Monster Core.

Level 5, judging by the number inscribed on it.

But there was an additional word—S Class.

Monster Cores from Class A and below weren’t much different, but an S Class Monster Core was incredibly valuable. When fused with a special artifact, it could grant the user access to the monster’s ability—similar to how Beast Tamers borrowed skills.

Leonardo immediately returned to normal mode and picked it up. It was right in front of him. He slipped it into his pocket.

Looking ahead, he saw a slightly opened treasure chest—and beside it, a massive key nearly the length of a human arm. It was made of black diamond, seemingly indestructible.

There was no way it belonged to the chest. The size difference was too great, and the chest itself wasn’t locked at all.

Leonardo felt that the key was more valuable than the chest.

The chest should be the reward for killing the Golden Golem—so what was the key a reward for?

He opened the chest first.

Inside was a silver knife, curved like a crescent moon.

But that wasn’t all.

There was also a silver necklace with a strange wheel-shaped pendant that seemed to rotate when observed.

DING!

(You have obtained Crescent Moon Knife, an S Class Weapon that can be used not only by hand but also with the mind, requiring only Intelligence without using Mana!)

(You have obtained Necklace of Full Restoration, an S Class Artifact capable of instantly restoring all of the user’s attributes up to three times a day!)

Leonardo wasn’t too impressed with the knife—but the necklace... he was certain the entire world would fight over it if he put it up for sale.

Of course, he wouldn’t sell it.

No one could be allowed to know about this.

He took both items and immediately wore the necklace.

Whether it was the knife or the necklace, they instantly connected to his mind.

Leonardo commanded the necklace to restore him.

Without any visible effect, he suddenly felt his entire body return to peak condition.

He felt completely refreshed.

"Ellie, touch this necklace!" 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎

Leonardo was curious if its effect could be used on others.

Ellie tapped it with her beak, and Leonardo ordered the necklace to restore her as well.

An instant later, Ellie froze in shock and flapped her wings twice.

"Did it work?" Leonardo asked.

"Yes... I’m fully recovered, as if I hadn’t done anything at all..." Ellie nodded.

Leonardo was delighted to hear that.

S Class—yet its effect was this powerful. Perhaps its limitation lay only in its rank. Maybe at higher levels, its effectiveness would diminish.

Of course, that would be at a very distant level.

He tucked the knife into his pants before picking up the massive black diamond key.

DING!

(You have obtained the key to open the Last Gate!)

A notification appeared.

"The Last Gate... what is that?" Leonardo wondered, confused.

He had never heard of it before.

DING!

(Do you wish to exit the gate, or be teleported back to Transmission World, or to another gate?)

(Send me to Transmission World!)

Leonardo preferred that option.

Even though he was invisible, he knew there were many people outside.

Who knew—someone might possess an ability to detect him.

Better safe than sorry.

Soon after, he was transported back to Transmission World with all his belongings.

Since he only had to carry the black key in his hand, it wasn’t difficult.

Not long after, he appeared once more on the long glass bridge.

"Did you hear? A new gate has appeared on Floor 1. It’s as large as the others—but different. It’s not chained. It’s just locked."

Leonardo heard that immediately upon arrival—and then many others began discussing it.

"Who actually killed the Golden Golem? The Japanese say there were no signs of battle, but there was an incredibly loud owl."

"Just an owl? How could that kill the Golden Golem? Maybe it moved to another layer."

"No, it’s been confirmed—it didn’t move. There were no signs of battle in any other layer either."

"By the way, today in City Z, there were several strange murder cases involving Level 1 and 2 Awakeners. All of them died with their hearts destroyed—without any wounds. There was said to be an owl’s cry at the time of death."

"Really? Could this person be from City Z?"

"..."

The situation had turned into global speculation—and now Ellie’s cry had become infamous worldwide.

Leonardo felt relieved that, to this day, no one knew he had made an owl his monster.

At first, he had only done it on a whim—thinking it was temporary until he obtained a real monster.

If people knew he had made an ordinary animal his monster, he would become a laughingstock. So he kept it a secret.

After thinking for a while, he decided to return to Earth.

It was better not to fight for now—not until Ellie gained another offensive ability.

And soon, he appeared back on Earth.

Seeing a bus about to depart, he quickly boarded it, beginning his journey back to the apartment.
