Chapter 419: Stumped

Seeing my aunt Pam and cousin Danny return with the Martins and Loren family led by Manhunter and other C.I.B. agents using EAD Matthew’s curse dominion as an intermediate, I finally signed in relief, regardless of the guilt I felt for using the rest of the townspeople evacuating as a distraction to make this possible.

I was no hero, just a random guy who would like to think he was on the side of good, but ultimately, when push comes to shove, I will put myself and my needs first over the greater good or bigger picture.

"How’s the evacuation proceeding in the town? Did they find anything suspicious or wrong about the townspeople?" EAD Matthews enquired Agent Manhunter, who returned to report after settling the Loren and Martins family in at Lander Estate.

"The evacuation is proceeding smoothly thanks to the local authority’s cooperation, and the townspeople appeared healthy, showing no signs of being under the influence of a curse spell," Manhunter answered to the best of her knowledge.

Mortal bodies could contain negative emotions, but they were not meant to house curse energy. So, if one were to be under the influence of curse energy, i.e. a curse spell, the symptoms would show.

"Why aren’t the curse terrorists making any move? What’s their end game?" Matthews thought aloud.

This question was on the minds of everyone present. As they were expecting the curse terrorists to do everything in their power to stop the town-wide evacuation. After all, with their Life-steal curse buff, the townsmen were basically their health packs waiting to be harvested in case they were ganged up on or sniped by the C.I.B. and McSuile forces. However, the latter showed no moment whatsoever since they hid in the veil of their fused curse dominion after the failed assassination attempt.

"The reinforcements are no good without a curse caster among the ranks," Janice uttered as it had been a while since the reinforcement, Evil Eyes from the McSuile family and two other sky-tier agents from C.I.B., had arrived long ago and were lying in wait with them with no intention to engage the enemy unless necessary. Without a solution to deal with the Life-steal curse spell, they couldn’t take action. It would be as stupid as trying to swim against the current of the river.

"Can’t I just charge my rifle to max and blast them all?" I asked, instead of stating the obvious like others, I stuck with trying to find the solution.

At full power, my rail rifle curse tool was capable of mortally wounding a Void-tier or even killing one, a bunch of sky-tier should not pose a problem, even if they had the buff of the Life-steal curse spell. That was what I would like to believe, but there was no telling what could happen on the field, which was why I hadn’t taken action despite knowing exactly where the curse terrorists were hiding in their fused curse dominion, thanks to the Leprechaun scope.

"No!" Delores exclaimed, surprising others. Feeling their gaze on her, she unenthusiastically explained, "I have seen it at full power; it will do more harm than good."

"It would not only obliterate those curse terrorists but also their fused curse dominion and then everything that falls in its path until it’s out of energy or meets its match. And I don’t think there is a Void-tier within hundreds of miles of this town to put an end to the destruction," Delores continued, finding the enthusiasm to explain in detail, seeing that everyone present, including Janice, felt she was exaggerating about Ace’s rail rifle.

Delores did not blame them. After all, Ace’s rail rifle was a mortal-tier curse tool. But for some reason, it was capable of firing bullets that could pose a threat to Void-tiers. One had to experience it themselves to believe it. She had, so she knew not to make light of Ace’s rail rifle. If she had not missed, everyone would now be convinced to believe that Ace’s rail rifle was capable of killing Void-tier. She regretted not taking Ace’s advice about the rail rifle seriously.

EAD Matthews eyed Delores and Ace, recalling the video footage of the streak of lightning vanishing in the sky when Elinor’s father killed the void-tier curseling rendered immobile by Elinor’s curse spell. She knew Ace’s curse tool was responsible for it and that it was stronger than she had seen him use it, but she nor anyone who saw that footage believed it was strong enough to take down a cursed Void-tier curseling, let alone one in its peak. The nerds at the C.I.B. confirmed that it could have hurt the Void-tier, but not be capable of killing one, because that was just impossible, even if it was suffering from a deadly curse.

"No, I think he should make the shot. I believe the curse dominion is strong enough to hold the residue of the shot. A lot of manpower and resources are being wasted here. Let us not delay it anymore," EAD Matthews disagreed with Delores and counterproposed, even hurried Ace to make the shot.

Seeing the crowd still not believing her, thinking that she was exaggerating. Delores turned to Ace, reminding him, "You said you have changed the power regulator, and it is not as strong and durable as the original one. You sure you want to take the risk of ruining your curse tool making this shot?"

"That..." I trailed off, knowing Delores was correct. If it were Dame Wasp or Specarc, I might have pulled this off, but I was stuck with Specroll. Its abilities were not as strong.

I wondered if Dame Wasp could spare Specarc for a few seconds. But soon I erased that thought from my mind as Dame Wasp’s new body took precedence. Her enhancement was key to me venturing into the ’World of Curses.’ After all, Dame Wasp’s abilities were versatile and handy for many fields, from combat to assassination to espionage to daily life, etc. Disturbing her over this wasn’t wise.

"No need. If you guys can get me close enough, I can swallow them whole and incinerate them along with their life-steal curse spell." A young and jubilant voice suggested. Arriving as a ray of hope in the darkest hour.
