The Strongest Curse Master-Chapter 467: Power Struggles
"Stop smiling. You need to be careful," Janice warned, appearing behind Matthews, who was grinning widely as Sir Ulysses excused himself.
"Why? Was that agent, whom Ava antagonized, an important figure in capital or something? I have never heard of him," Matthews asked, turning to face Janice. Her grin was replaced by a subtle frown, but her expression mostly remained indifferent.
"No, not him. His identity is a bit complicated, but he is just a kid who doesn’t know better. I am talking about old fart Ulysses—" Janice clarified, seeing Matthews misunderstood her, but before she could finish, Matthews hurriedly covered her mouth and whispered, "Girl, have you lost your mind? I beg you, please watch your words. You are a McSuile, I’m not. Anyone of these assholes here will come after me just to please you know who."
"It’s fine. Dee3 gave me temporary authority over the curse array. They cannot hear us. Forget about them, what you need to know is: Ulysses is the incarnation of all of Wall Street and the Curse bureaucrats in the capital combined. He is a warlord who won’t think twice about sacrificing any number of young and naïve curse masters like Ava to achieve his agenda or massacre millions of innocent souls if they get in his way.
There is a reason his name isn’t on the history pages. My family elders said that few of our founding fathers considered him a war criminal and even proposed to banish him from the Mortal World to the ’World of Curses.’ Ultimately, they didn’t because he and his field army consisting solely of curse users were invaluable for our country’s defense back then.
However, after C.I.B. grew to prominence, various void-tier curse organizations came together to silently force the old bastard into retirement and split his curse field army into various small battalions and transferred them to war zones and army bases around the globe to die, choosing to cover his past crimes and prop him up as a national hero. Making him a model curse user many young curse users aspire to be.
I know it’s frustrating. But it was either that or a civil war. The only reason he compromised was because he knew he would lose sooner or later and didn’t want his legacy to be destroyed over the power struggle between him and the C.I.B. Though retired, that crafty old bastard didn’t rest but took this as an opportunity to rebrand himself.
He began to use his war fortune to establish various businesses and organizations to diversify his portfolio. Most importantly, investing in promising young curse users, but the investment came with a condition: If they ever chose to, they should come to work for one of his businesses or organizations until they paid off his investment in them. Then they were free to pursue their goals and dreams.
Sounds simple and fair, right? That was only until you realized what truly his businesses and organizations did for profits. Once they knew the truth, there was no turning back, as only death awaited them. Not just them but everyone who would miss them after they were gone.
I don’t think he is here to support Dee3 but to recruit her. If he really wanted to support her, he would have stepped in when the government turned her into a most wanted curse criminal. His support combined with the momentum Dee3’s popularity had gathered back then would have easily forced the government to acknowledge Dee3 as a citizen. But he didn’t show himself then.
This guy is all about himself. You cannot trust a single word that comes out of his mouth. I guess with the news about the Forgotten Colony Roanoak and Dee3, for him this was an event worth making a personal appearance," Janice narrated in a single breath and then, eyeing shocked Matthews, she warned, "All I’m trying to say is you shouldn’t be happy that someone like him has taken interest in your daughter. That old bastard usually has others do his dirty work, but I guess seeing a curse master with a curse anchor he couldn’t help himself."
Matthews’ face paled as she learned the truth about the unsung nation’s hero. Still, she uttered, "How come I never heard this about him?"
Shaking her head, Janice sighed, "The water in the capital is deeper than you can imagine. There is a reason why my grandpa chose to establish our family far from the capital. Though Ulysses was ultimately forced out of power, he still has friends in high places. With the amount of power he holds and with the government’s cooperation, it was easy for him to hide his past sins. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
Besides, we have more important things to be worried about. A third of the people gathered here have some ulterior motive as to why they are here. Madam Dee3 is too kind to say no to all of these assholes. So—"
"Make sure these assholes don’t get an opportunity to catch her alone? I can do that. We have more allies here who can help. I can gather them and get them to volunteer, but what about Sir Ulysses? If he is everything you say he is, I don’t think he will take kindly to a rejection," Matthews cut in, showing she knew what to do, but she was worried about the biggest variable of all, Sir Ulysses.
"Don’t worry about that old clown. Madam Dee3 is a family friend, and we McSuiles’ never abandon a friend in need. My family elders and Grandpa’s disciples will keep him in check," Janice informed with a smirk. If not for her family elders and disciples being worried about the family getting a reputation for bullying the weak, they were prepared to personally take action against anyone who tried to take advantage of Dee3’s kind nature tonight.
"I know you said not to worry, but about that agent from Capital that Ava—" Matthews couldn’t help but ask after learning that she had underestimated the power struggle in the capital. So, she couldn’t help but wonder if the path she chose was right? Not that it mattered now, as there was no turning back. The things she did and knew not only left her vulnerable but made her a liability.
"Don’t worry about him. I think the government sent him here to capture or assassinate Dee3. If they did, they chose the wrong agent. If my guess is correct, no matter what he chooses today, that kid will be making a lot of enemies regardless of his intentions. He may even be forced to be on the run," Janice assured Matthews that the blonde agent that Ava pissed wasn’t a problem.
"You seem to know him quite well," Matthews said, lifting her eyebrow.
"Yeah, C.I.B. contracted us to work on a curse-crafting project together, but it fell apart before we even met because of our differences. Can you believe that kid wanted me to be his assistant curse caster in the project? Me! An assistant to someone way, way younger and less experienced than me, and on a curse-crafting project, no less!" Janice got enraged just recalling the events. Though she never personally met Agent Kidd, she knew enough about him.
