Chapter 101: Valentine Special Chapter 7: The Line Between Love and Madness Is Thin

Inside Karen’s thoughts? They were pure madness: 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

Ben-chan? Dead?

Fuck... Mom never jokes about things like this... and Ben-chan seem like one who would hide an illness...

But Ben-chan, why? Why didn’t you tell me...?

Ben-chan is really dead? Is that really possible?

"Arrggghhh!!!" Karen suddenly broke out into a manic, fear-instilling scream, further frightening her mother and daughter. "NOOOO!! IT’S A LIE! PLEASE TELL ME IT’S A LIE! TELL ME IT’S A FUCKING NASTY PRANK! TELL ME IT’S ACTUALLY APRIL’S FOOL DAY AND NOT VALENTINE’S DAY TODAY!"

The scream was shuddering, and raw and jagged, echoing off the marble floors and glass walls.

Mrs. Steven recoiled, her hands flying to her mouth.

Young Alice froze at the sight of her mother losing her mind, her eyes wide as she clutched the hem of her pink dress.

The silver and red balloons overhead bobbed silently, as if nothing had happened.

Then something truly terrible occurred:

Ah... Silly me... I forgot...

"If Ben-chan has died and went to the other side..." She mumbled out loud, "Is it not only proper that I follow him...?"

Mrs. Steven’s face immediately paled at those horrifying words, as she ran to grab Karen’s torso.

"Let me go, mom!" Karen yelled, thrashing to escape the grip.

"Karen, please...!" Mrs. Steven begged in tears. "I beg you! Please, calm down, I beg you!"

Alice was at a corner, terrified of what was going on, and crying in horror, as her mother shrieked and thrashed like a wild animal.

"I understand! I understand you love him, but he wouldn’t like this, please settle down honey!!"

"I said let go, you hag!" Karen ignored her mother’s words. "I won’t let you come in-between me and Ben-chan!"

Fortunately, Karen’s siblings and some neighbors had come along, all trying to calm her down, but to no avail.

Right then, she was one hundred percent certain that if she died and went to heaven, or hell, she’d meet Benjamin there.

But—to Karen—for some odd reason, everyone appeared to be getting in the way.

In the struggle, her hand picked up a pen from the table, and she immediately stabbed her brother’s arm.

Then she began to bite Mrs. Steven’s shoulder.

However, Mrs. Steven still held her tight, deathly scared of what might happen if Karen broke free.

In a second later, Karen suddenly weakened and collapsed on the ground.

Everyone were calling her name, tapping her cheeks to wake her up, and shaking her body.

Her mother had nearly cried blood, begging someone to do something about her clearly mentally-derailing daughter.

Then Karen, on the ground, opened her eyes and smiled eerily.

Then with unnaturally strength, she swung her arms and everyone were sent flying away.

"Mom, please stop this!" Alice ran and grabbed her legs. "You’re scaring me!"

"You too, brat?! No one will come in-between me and my love!"

"Then take me too!" Alice screamed, as the people in the room tried to shut the door and remove every sharp and pointy object in the area. "I don’t want to be away from Mommy!"

"I’m sorry, Alice..." Nonetheless, at her daughter’s words, Karen’s expression softened. "But I can’t let you come with me. Listen to me: mommy loves you... You’ll grow up. And you’ll become a big and powerful woman one day. You hear me? Then you’ll find the one you love too."

Before anyone would do anything else, Karen carried Alice to the side, then bolted towards the door.

"Don’t worry, it’s locked!" Someone assured the others.

Unfortunately, Karen still kept running, until she slammed her body against the heavy door, with a BANG!

Effectively breaking off the entire door and the frame, and still moving, Karen fell off the balcony and plummeted downward.

***

The apartment was high above the city, one of those sleek glass towers in Beverly Hills where the balconies jutted out like open mouths over the street far below.

The railing was only waist-high. Being modern and minimalist, it was never meant to stop someone who truly wanted to go over it.

Karen hit it at full speed, body folding over the metal edge in a single violent motion.

The doorframe had splintered behind her with a sharp crack of wood and metal. The glass panels beside it shattered in a glittering cascade.

She hung in the air for half a second, with her arms flailing and her legs kicking air, then gravity dragged her completely.

The fall was terribly fast.

Twenty-three floors of open air, as the wind roared past her ears, whipping her hair into a black storm.

The city lights blurred into streaks of gold and white. Her dress fluttered upward like broken wings.

whispers of love for Benjamin flowed from her mouth, real and endless, rising over the distant hum of traffic below.

She thought of Benjamin all the whole way down.

Him smiling at her chocolates that day.

Him hugging her after the funeral.

Him texting "I love you too" on the phone just last month.

The ground rushed up; the concrete, the asphalt, and a narrow strip of landscape between the tower and the street.

"Now..." She twisted mid-air, with her arms out like she could fly to him. "I’ll be with hi—"

Then impact.

CRUNCH.

SPLASH.

The sound was wet, unpleasant and concluding.

Her body struck the pavement at terminal velocity, her skull first, then torso, then limbs folding inward like paper.

Blood sprayed outward in a wide, dark arc, mixing with shattered glass from the falling door fragments that rained down after her.

Her whispers cut off mid-note, replaced by the sickening thud of meat and bone against concrete.

"H... HYAAHHHHHH!!!"

The cry came from above. From the shattered balcony where her mother leaned over the broken railing, her hands gripping the metal so hard her knuckles went white.

Alice stood frozen behind her, her small hands over her mouth, with her eyes wide with shock. Neighbors poured out into the hallway, their phones already in hands, with their voices rising in panic.

"Hello? 911? Someone just fell off a twenty-three story building!"

"Eh? Then they’re definitely dead, right?"

"What? Just send help!"

Down below, cars screeched to a halt.

Someone was shouting at the scene, and then someone else screamed too. A security guard ran from the lobby entrance, his radio crackling uselessly.

Karen lay motionless on the pavement, her limbs splayed at unnatural angles, blood pooling beneath her head in a dark halo.

Then a red paper from some chocolates, somewhere up there, fluttered down after her and landed gently in the spreading stain.

Every part of the city kept moving around her—car horns blaring, lights flickering around, and life continuing—but in that single moment, everything stopped... for Karen.

***

’Eh...? What’s going on?’ Karen looked at the bloody mess on the ground, as her family surrounded it crying and anguishing.

The pavement below the shattered balcony was a dark smear of red and broken glass.

Her body lay twisted at impossible angles; her head cracked open against the concrete, her limbs splayed, with her dress torn and soaked in blood that spread outward in a wide, irregular pool.

Her mother knelt beside it, with her hands hovering uselessly, and her mouth open in a silent scream. "K-Karen...? This can’t be happening..."

Alice stood frozen a few steps back, her small hands still over her mouth, her teary eyes huge with disbelief.

Neighbors continued to pour out of the building lobby, their phones raised to take pictures and such, their voices overlapping in panic.

Someone had already called emergency services, so sirens were wailing in the distance.

However—

Karen herself was standing upright... Watching everything unfold in the land of the living, watching everything go on without her.

’Did I... die? If that’s the case... Then... why am I not with Ben-chan right now...?’
