Chapter 98: Rifts: Essence Plunder

[You are treading upon TABOO]

[Providence reduced]

[Providence: (—)]

[TABOO threshold crossed]

[WORM!]

[You have committed a TABOO]

[You have committed a TABOO]

Kallen went through the string of notifications in his mindscape, his breathing calm and rhythmic. To the outside, he seemed to still be unconscious, lying like a ragdoll on the warm, grimy floor.

The noise of talking and knocking equipments drifting into his ears, as he wandered in his thoughts.

He seemed to have accumulated a lot of TABOO at some point that he didn’t recall.

’Must be after I passed out,’ he thought.

He did find it weird because he couldn’t remember passing out. Well, no one ever remembers when they pass out. The last thing his memory could foretell was him etching every expression on Menelaus’ face into his mind.

Kallen could say with conviction that in both of his lives, he had not wanted to kill a person as much as he wanted to torture and kill Menelaus.

Although his thoughts were full of murderous intentions right now, his breathing was absolutely calm and unchanging, and his killing intent perfectly reined in, not the slightest wisp detectable.

There were still some good takeaways amongst the endless notifications... quite a substantial amount of them, to be exact.

[Your Will has evolved]

[An Awakened Will: A sapling of defiance. Your authority over the World increases]

[You have learned a Passive Skill: Blood Will]

[You have gained a Title: Defiant Worm]

’A lot must have happened’, Kallen thought.

He was fully healed, with not even the slightest feeling of pain from any part of his body. His body was also brimming with so much energy.

It was odd, considering he had not eaten anything. So there was no way he should have recovered enough energy to heal, let alone be feeling full of power and energy.

Unless so much time had passed that he naturally recovered enough to regenerate. But if that was the case, he wouldn’t be so full of energy.

’Energy...’ His soul suddenly shook, and he hurriedly swept his senses over his core and was relieved to find out he hadn’t accidentally awakened.

Thinking about the runic symbols Menelaus had been drawing on him, he could feel a sort of connection with them. It was hard to miss, as those parts of his body seemed to have blackened out, tracing the lines of the carvings.

He could even draw their shape in his mind, down to their latest details.

He tried to draw upon that connection...

Hurriedly he clenched his jaw and forcefully swallowed the mouthful of blood he had almost thrown up.

Gurgling sounds came from his stomach, and pain blared there like a siren. He was quite sure he had turned his innards to mush.

It took a few seconds to calm, and his regeneration Trait, to begin healing him.

Was this the reason he was so full of energy now? Why did it harm him then?

When he connected with the carvings, he could a sort of pulling force from them, and the suction seemed to come from his hands. He had just tugged on it, and almost got himself killed, by his own ability no less.

It’d be better if he finished reading through all the notifications... There had to be something he was missing.

[Blood Will (Second Ascension Passive Skill): A Will steeped in blood, and forged of blood.]

[Like a true predator, your killing intent impacts the minds of those in your surroundings, uncaring of friend or foe, such that their soul goes numb and their blood runs cold and stiff. With more kills and even more spilled blood in your surroundings, its potency increases more and more.]

Kallen read the details in appreciation, fragments of a plan beginning to form in his head.

[You have gained a Title: Defiant Worm]

[Defiant Worm: A slave who dares to challenge absolute authority. A defiant mortal, who undauntedly forged a path for himself before the eye that holds in its breath the beginning and the end.]

[Ignore Will suppression from Wills higher by two evolution tiers.]

[+100% to Mental Stat(s)]

Kallen read through this one as well, still not finding what it was he was looking for.

[You have gained a new Trait: Essence Plunder]

[Essence Plunder (CURS-ED): Walk your path. Slight the Path of Ascension]

[Plunder the Essence of the dead to grow stronger]

It was just two short lines, yet Kallen read through the last notification with a different kind of focus, filtering out the noise of the forge.

He understood what it was saying, but at the same time, it was so vague.

Plunder the Essence of the dead to grow stronger? What was so different from that and what the Existential Compendium did?

And how does one plunder Essence? It’s not like a person could see the Essence of another.

At most, one could only feel the vastness of one, which was how a person’s Ascension and power level were determined. Or feel its potency, to determine if they were mediocre or elite.

Besides, this Trait was strange. Normally, Traits affected only one aspect of a person’s existence—either the body or the soul. However, this one affected a person’s Essence, which was a harmony of both the body and the soul.

But there was something more in its description. Slight the Path of Ascension. Looking at all the strings of TABOO notifications he had acquired, Kallen could tell that it was because of this Trait.

Walk a Path. Slight the Path of Ascension. He would need to gain more and more TABOO to grow stronger? He didn’t know what the punishment of acquiring a TABOO was, and now he needed to gain more.

The urge to kill Menelaus in his heart only seemed to grow more ferocious.

But more importantly, it had a CURSED attribute—just like the Thieving Blades. No, this one was a little different, as it was termed CURS-ED instead of CURSED.

He didn’t know what the difference between the two was, but the fact that it had the tag at all just suggested trouble... if everything else about the Trait was not trouble enough.

He was quite sure it had to do with those runic symbols Menelaus had drawn on him. But what was his end goal? Or rather, what was the end goal of the person behind him?
