Chapter 110: One Photo

In the meantime, Lyra was in Oaklyn when the maid Kiera had sent arrived at the hospital.

"Mrs. Kiera wants photos. I just need to go in, take one picture, and get paid," she said to herself, barely lowering her voice.

She didn’t notice a few people nearby glanced her way.

A gentle smile touched her face as determination pushed her forward, straight to the Mother and Child Clinic counter, where she asked for Dr. Ashford.

But frustration crept in the moment she was told the doctor was on leave.

"Do you know where she’s staying? Could you give me her address?"

The nurse frowned. The girl’s boldness caught her off guard. Asking for a doctor’s address crossed a line.

From a distance, Jane approached the counter. The nurse quickly took Jane by the hand, pulled her aside, as she rubbed her temple.

"See that girl? She’s been asking for Lyra. I’ve told her several times Lyra isn’t here, but she won’t leave. Now she’s asking for the home address," she whispered.

Jane immediately took a quick look and turned to the nurse beside her, whispering, "That girl looks like she just finished high school, and Lyra doesn’t have any friends that young."

She pinched her chin thoughtfully, then said, "It’s fine. Go back to your work."

Jane walked toward the girl. "Miss, are you looking for Dr. Ashford?"

The girl nodded twice.

"She’s on leave. May I ask what this is about?"

"I just want to see her."

"Is it important?" Jane asked.

The girl paused. She hadn’t expected to be questioned this much.

She had thought the job would be easy, just meet the doctor, take a photo, and get the money.

"Yes, It’s important." she said at last, as she wanted the money badly.

"All right. Leave your number, and I’ll contact you when she returns from leave."

The girl’s eyes widened. She shook her head. "No. I need to see her now."

Jane watched her for a moment, wondering if the girl’s ears worked properly. She had already told her that Lyra was on leave.

"I’m sorry, I can’t help you with that. You can leave your number, or not... I’ll have to call security."

The word security made her stomach drop. This wasn’t worth the trouble.

Then she scoffed. "Fine." She left her phone number, turned on her heel and stormed off.

Outside the building, she stopped. The automatic doors slid shut behind her, but she didn’t move. She stood there, staring at nothing, trying to figure out what to do next.

She really needed the money, for her younger brother’s school fees and for her mother’s medication.

As she paced back and forth, one name surfaced in her mind.

Maybe Griffin could help. Maybe he could ask Dante for a photo of Lyra. Just one picture. That was all she needed.

She knew where Griffin lived, and soon she was on a bus headed there.

...

In Oaklyn, Lyra slowly woke from a deep sleep when her nose catching the faint trace of Rowan’s perfume.

She rubbed her eyes and blinking at the sunlight streaming through the curtains.

Rowan was already up, dressed, and moving around the room. He picked up his tie from the edge of the bed and walked over to the mirror, fastening it as he went.

"Do I... have to come?" Her voice was hoarse, still heavy with sleep.

Just as yesterday, Rowan had thought about taking Lyra to the meeting once again. But after they had spent the night together until the early hours, and seeing how exhausted she was, he let the idea go.

"Just rest. I’ll finish the meeting this afternoon and come get you. If you need anything, Kane will be around. Just call for him."

He walked over to the bed, pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead and then left the room.

She then drifted back to sleep, relieved she didn’t have to sit through another tedious meeting.

An hour later, she woke again, this time fully alert and refreshed. Her stomach, however, had other complaints. It growled softly, reminding her she hadn’t eaten a thing.

She pushed the covers aside and slowly climbed out of bed, heading for the bathroom. A warm bath helped ease the lingering soreness in her body.

Afterward, she dressed carefully, choosing a turtleneck knit to hide the faint red marks circling her neck.

Once she was fully ready, she glanced at the clock. It was still early and Rowan would be tied up in meetings for a while.

She picked up her phone and called Kane.

"Madam. Do you need anything?" Kane’s voice came through the line.

"Where are you?" Lyra asked, reaching for her keycard and handbag. "Come have a meal with me."

"I’m in the lobby. I’ll wait for you," Kane replied.

They ended the call, and she wasted no time, closing the door behind her.

She waited patiently for the elevator, watching as the doors slowly slid open the moment it reached the ground floor, then stepped out.

Her gaze swept the lobby for Kane and found him with a woman, flirting, but the woman was clearly overdoing it.

Lyra raised an eyebrow, said nothing, and decided to give him some space before walking away.

But still she sent him a quick message, letting him know she’d head to the hotel’s dining area on her own.

"Madam, wait—"

Kane’s voice reached her from behind.

Lyra paused and turned at once, only to see him closing the distance with long strides. She then continued toward the dining area, just as Kane was only a few steps away from her.

"I’m sorry, madam. I didn’t notice you coming out of the elevator," he explained, clearly hoping she wasn’t upset with him.

"It’s okay. I saw you with your friend earlier, I just didn’t want to interrupt."

Her mouth watered almost immediately as the rich aroma of warm dishes reached her.

Kane was about to say the woman wasn’t his friend, but the aroma caught his attention as well.

"I’m hungry, Kane. Let’s eat," she added, already moving closer to the buffet.
