The Vampire King's Pet-Chapter 296: Who are you?
Hanging by the gates were bodies belonging to werewolves, but even that wasn’t a hundred percent certified since their ears had been ripped out.
Their bodies had been torn into shreds, and it seemed like their skin had been peeled off simply for the fun of it.
Blood still dripped from them, making it clear that the incident hadn’t happened too long ago.
It was horrific to look at—far worse than the time Aira had seen a Zygon transform from its human form into its monstrous one.
Her eyes were wild as she cautiously looked around, even as everyone else got out of their carriages and began to look around as well.
No one dared to go past the gate, as they all subconsciously focused on Zyren, who was the only one who walked ahead with a relaxed expression on his face, almost like he was simply walking through his mansion.
Aira would have preferred to stay back in the carriage, but quickly changed her mind when Liora stepped closer, making it clear that they would be following Zyren in.
It was then that she finally took deep breaths as she stepped closer to Zyren, waiting for him to walk further in so they could find out what had happened to King Jared and the others who had shifted and dashed in.
Without having to be asked, Aira went ahead and released her ability in small quantities around her, which looked like white droplets in the air.
It was to ensure that if a Zygon so much as came closer to them, it would instantly begin to react to it.
She wasn’t surprised when Liora, her sister, instantly did her best to put more distance between them to ensure that she would not be affected by Aira’s ability, which was quite painful whenever it touched her.
Zyren continued to head forward, and Aira instantly followed. It wasn’t long until they got to the city buildings, even if along the way there was nothing but dead and scattered pieces of bodies on the ground.
It was obvious that the Zygon monsters were not even trying to take their place and had simply eaten their insides, leaving their skins simply because they could, and not because it couldn’t be eaten.
The smell was atrocious, as the tangy metallic scent of blood clung to the air and ground in huge droplets.
The farther in they went through the marketplace and houses, the worse it got, in a way that made everyone get the full idea of what had gone down.
It had clearly been a massacre, only made worse by the fact that Zyren didn’t even try to hide the glee on his face as he walked farther in with his hands by his sides.
The sun was still going down in the sky, and while Zyren didn’t need to cover his skin from the sun—a phenomenon that no one understood—other vampires had to wear protective cloaks over their heads and faces to ensure that they didn’t turn into paste.
Aira clung to Zyren’s side, worried that whatever had caused such destruction wasn’t over and was clearly just starting—something she didn’t want to get caught between.
It wasn’t until they traveled farther and reached the center that they saw King Jared and his entourage, clad in cloaks that could be easily discarded, having clearly just transformed back into their human forms.
"The Zygons! They’ve definitely most likely left!" Jared pointed out before gesturing to a small heap of bodies that were also in shreds and clearly belonged to monsters, nothing that remotely looked human.
"We were too late! Thankfully, Aaron and a couple of my men were able to herd the citizens to an underground safe zone!" Jared continued, even as he gave orders to Falson, Kannedy, and Brilla to give the signal that all was good.
They didn’t hesitate and instantly went ahead to do as they were told, even as the citizens began to step out from a huge building and some other buildings around.
They looked worried and scared, but otherwise fine, even as Jared moved closer to where Zyren stood, a smile still fixed on his face.
Zyren mostly ignored him, focusing more on Aira, who could not hide the anxiety showing on her face.
"We need you to confirm that all of them are indeed fine and haven’t been killed and shapeshifted into by Zygons," Jared said, even as Aira instantly nodded her head with a smile and stepped forward past Zyren to help—only to be surprised when Zyren stepped between them instead.
Placing his hands to the side, Zyren blocked her as Aira looked at him with a surprised expression and spoke before he did.
"He’s right!" she said, knowing that checking each of them one after the other was the best option instead of her just releasing her ability from a distance.
Although Zyren heard her, he didn’t immediately respond. Instead, he fixed his gaze on King Jared, who did the same with a hint of a frown on his face.
"These are my people! They are the reason we came! Are you just going to stop her from making sure that there are no Zygons among them?" King Jared asked, his golden eyes blazing even as his council members moved closer to stand beside him.
They were clearly in agreement, not in support of Zyren, who to them seemed like he was trying to cause problems.
Only for everyone to be taken aback when, instead of Zyren addressing the issue, he spoke directly to King Jared.
"Who are you?"
The words were fine by themselves, but in the context of the conversation they were currently having, they weren’t.
It didn’t help that King Jared’s temper instantly flared as he stared and growled directly at King Zyren, who didn’t seem to care, as the smile on his face remained fixed right where it was.
"Who are you? Clearly, you are not King Jared!" Zyren said again, and even if before others thought he was joking, by the time he said it the second time around, every vampire instantly raised the silver weapons they had brought along—since it also worked on Zygons.
