Chapter 341: Grappling at Straws

Gregory found out, and he didn’t hesitate to find some men willing to spread the truth for a price. Though he still had to convince them that the king wouldn’t kill them, but instead reward them once his information was proved right.

"Why would I pay money to give you unverified information?" he had asked them, and they had instantly believed him. Gregory had then watched as they headed right into their death.

But still, it had gotten the word out that she was a werewolf—only to be disappointed to see Lord Drehk walk out with her like nothing had happened.

He had been completely stunned to watch the people toss flowers at their feet, ignoring the revelation they had just heard.

Gregory was smart enough to put some distance between himself and the food festival, even as he spied on them.

Stunned to watch his sister, Rymora, mingle with vampires, kissing one with complete ease, it made his stomach churn.

"Even a runt without a wolf should know her place!" he thought to himself in anger before leaving and heading back to the inn where the Alpha, Luna, and Falson stayed.

Knocking on Falson’s door, even as he bowed, he informed him of all that had happened. He was relieved to see the disgust that flashed in Falson’s eyes as he spoke.

"Clearly we can’t stand by and allow this to continue," he thought to himself, not saying anything more, aware of his place as nothing but a guard. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

Falson was slowly lost in thought before he stepped out of his room and headed over to the Alpha’s room, knocking on his door.

It was very late at night, but he figured it was better to have the conversation then rather than wait until the next morning.

He had just knocked on the door when ruffling noises were heard on the other side. A moment of silence passed before Falson got an instruction to wait.

It took a few more moments before the door swung open to reveal King Jared, sweat pooled on his forehead, pulling open the door just enough to reveal himself—but not wide enough to reveal other parts of the room.

"It’s late!" King Jared snapped, annoyed at the interruption, even as Falson bowed and began to speak about what Gregory had told him.

King Jared was quiet for a few moments before he chuckled with a wry expression on his face, going ahead to widen the door and gesturing for the two of them to enter.

Falson had just walked in when he was surprised to see Luna Clara, sitting on the chair with a pale expression on her face.

Sweat matted her forehead even as she looked slightly in pain, sitting on the chair with a cold expression as she fixed her gaze on them.

Falson didn’t dare to stare for too long before he lowered his head and began to speak.

"Alpha! I can’t believe a part of us would dare to align herself with a vampire! We need to kill her!" Falson pointed out, wanting her dead as soon as possible, simply from the thought of it.

Gregory stood nearby, nodding his head to show that he also agreed. It was a disgrace to allow her to continue to live.

King Jared simply walked back to his bed and settled on it with a small smile, glancing at Clara almost as if he were asking to know what she thought.

"Killing her is impossible!" she said with a shrug, which she didn’t even try to hide.

"Even if we manage it... we can’t afford to earn the err of Lord Drehk—not until King Zyren is dead!" she pointed out, doing her best to lean on the chair to reduce the pain between her legs.

"The focus is on getting the black vial and getting Lady Aria to get it for us!" King Jared pointed out, even as he turned his gaze to Gregory, speaking to him.

"Can you meet with the hunter houses? They should have a way to contact her?" King Jared said, even as Falson slightly shook his head to show he disagreed.

"That is if Lady Aria is still interested in killing Zyren! Recent reports show them holding hands and being more receptive than usual!"

"Especially at the wedding!" Falson pointed out with a frown, even as Clara continued to sit on the chair in complete silence.

Satisfied to simply listen to what was being said without interrupting.

The truth was that she didn’t believe they would succeed. It was almost like she could see the end, which King Jared had chosen to be blind to.

Zyren wasn’t a fool. If that vial could really hurt him, he would have destroyed it, not left it hanging around him.

Most importantly, if he thought King Jared was a threat, he would have killed him. There was no reason to keep him alive.

"If I know what’s good for me, I would run!" she thought to herself, even though she knew that she couldn’t—not while King Jared was still alive.

That was, unless she delivered him to the king herself. But the thought had just crossed her mind when she squashed it.

King Jared was still much stronger than her, even with one arm.

"If you get in contact with the hunter houses, they’ll know you’re here. Do you trust them that much?" Clara asked, even as King Jared nodded his head.

"They’ve proven themselves! They want Zyren dead just as much as I do!" he responded, even as Clara let out a sigh while she heard him continue to speak.

"...The zygons have retreated, but they are still mostly in the realm. Zyren must intend to get rid of them soon! That could be our chance!" King Jared said with conviction in his eyes, which he didn’t completely feel in his chest. The truth was that he was pulling at straws and grabbing at whatever he could.

The looks of pity he got from his people were almost too much to stomach every time he thought about it—enough that he wanted nothing but revenge.

King Jared had just sighed, intending to dismiss Falson, only for his eyes to widen as he heard Falson say something that stunned him. Something so unexpected that it brought a hint of a smile to his face, since he himself had not considered it.

"What about his family, which he has jailed in the dungeons? They are strong and alive! I’m sure they’ll want revenge!" Falson said, a thought he had been considering, given the fact that he was in charge of gathering information for the werewolf realm.
