The Vampire King's Possession-Chapter 34 - . Ages
Chapter 34: 34. Ages
"I am thirty-six years old." She said with an amused face as she stared at Mauve.
Mauve tried to compose herself as she heard Mill's age but she couldn't. "Unbelievable!" She yelled and jumped to her feet. "You don't look a day over eighteen."
Mill's face broke into a smile. "Why thank you. How old are you, Mauve?"
"I clocked eighteen three months ago."
"Oh, that's pretty young. I hear humans age faster than we do."
"Yes, a thirty-six-year-old human looks much much older than you do." Mauve said. "Um, do you know how old Jael is?"
Mill frowned but she didn't look pissed. Mauve almost smacked herself. Her tongue was becoming a nuisance, asking questions without thinking. This was getting out of hand but she was curious and there was no way in hell she would be able to ask Jael his age.
"The sire is at least a hundred and fifty years old. I do not know for sure but he is older than Damon and Damon is about a hundred and twenty-something years old, I am not quite sure. You know Damon, right?"
"Yes," Mauve replied
"I heard he was among the guards that brought you to the castle."
Mauve thought she saw a hint of pink on Mill's pale cheeks but she figured it was her eyes playing tricks on her as it was there against when she blinked.
"He is. Do you know how he is? I haven't seen him since we arrived."
"He is fine, he is in a terrible state but he will survive."
Mauve gasped and put her hand to her chest. She couldn't help but feel that this was her fault somehow.
"I have to go to Mauve, I have a lot to do. Do not hesitate to let me know if you need anything."
"Thank you, Mill." Mauve mumbled and sat back on the bed.
"Oh, Mauve. Are you done with this?" She pointed to the tray that still had one apple on it.
Mauve nodded, she did want to eat the last apples but she didn't want to delay Mill from taking it now. Also, now that she remembered Damon and the rest of the guards, she was in a sour mood.
"Okay." She picked up the tray and started walking away. Suddenly, she stopped and turned around. "The first meal would be ready in less than two hours. Would you dine in the dining room or would you prefer your bedroom?"
"I would prefer to eat here, please." Mauve mumbled. She wasn't sure Jael would do the same but for some reason, she didn't want to run into him. The idea unnerved her.
"I see, I will take my leave. Let me know if you need anything."
"I will."
As soon as the door closed, Mauve threw herself in bed. She was tired and at the same time, she was energized. She was mentally exhausted, reading the book had taken a toll on her.
She closed her eyes but she knew wouldn't be able to sleep. She rolled in bed unsure of what to do with herself. She didn't want to go out of her room now that everybody was awake.
Mauve did not know how long she stayed in the bed staring at the ceiling before she heard a knock. "Come in."
The door opened to reveal Vae, she looked stressed as though she had not had enough sleep. Mauve sat upright immediately as the maid walked up to her.
"Good day, princess." She said as soon as she got close enough, announcing her presence.
"Is everything alright, Vae?" Mauve asked, concern written all over her face.

"Yes, I just couldn't sleep."
"Oh, you don't have to care for me today. Get some rest, I can take care of myself."
"It isn't a bother. Attending to you isn't much of a chore. Would you like to have your bath now?"
Mauve stared at Vae as if she grew a horn. "I just took my bath."
"That was hours ago, princes," Vae exclaimed, she looked horrified that Mauve hadn't considered the option of bathing again. "Besides, you're about to eat with the Vampire King. Would you rather smell like dry sweat? I hear vampires' sense of smell is better than wolves."
Mauve reddened as she wondered if she smelt funny when Jael bit into her neck. "I don't stink and I am not eating in the dining room. I am eating in my room."
Vae looked flabbergasted. "Why?"
"I rather eat alone in my room than eat alone in the dining room."
"But I heard the vampire king would be dining outside his room as he always does."
"I want to eat in my room." Mauve was adamant.
"Yes, princess. I will let the servant know to get your bath water ready." Vae turned on her heel and headed for the door.
"You don't have to go all the way to tell them. I can just get it from here."
Vae stopped and turned around. "What do you mean, princess?"
"See," Mauve said and crawled to the edge of the bed. She stretched her hands and pulled on one of the cream strings twice.
Vae frowned, she didn't look impressed. "What exactly am I looking at, princess?"
"Wait, you will see in a moment." But even as she spoke, there was no confidence in her words. She had not heard any bell when she pulled on the ropes as Mill asked her to.
Vae folded her arms but kept whatever she wanted to say to herself. The silence dragged on and Mauve felt herself grow smaller, Vae's judging stares weren't helping either.
Two minutes passed and Mauve wished the ground would open and swallow her. Three minutes passed and it soon dragged on to five.
"Princess," Vae called. "I will go see what the hold up is."
Mauve nodded, there was nothing for her to say. She would be soaking in the tub already if Vae had gone to get it.
Vae walked to the door and opened it. She yelped. Mauve jumped out of bed wondering what the scream was about. She found Mill's brother standing on the other side with a tub in his hand.
He stared at Vae with a sneer and walked past her into the room without asking for permission.
"Barbarian," Vae muttered under her breath but it was loud enough for everybody to hear.
Vae's eyes grew bigger and she looked at the vampire, he didn't even spare Vae a glance. As soon as he dropped the tub, he left the room. He was barely out of the room when Vae closed the door. It was obvious, she wanted it to hit him.
"I will help you out of your dress princess," she said with a huge smile.
Mauve smiled, she had also wished the door had hit him on his way out. "Thank you."
The shower was a quick one and as soon as she was done, a different servant brought her meal on a tray. She had been expecting Mill and was a little disappointed.
"Do you know any vampire called Mill?" Mauve asked as she took a spoon of soup out of her bowl.
Vae frowned, "I told you, princess. The vampires here avoid me."
"She's a girl…" Mauve coughed, "a woman."
"A servant?"
"Most likely, she cooks I think." Mauve peered at her.
"I should know her by face but I do not know any servant by the name Mill."
"I see," Mauve said and returned to eating.
"Why, princess?" Vae asked and walked closer. "Did something happen?"
"Oh, no. She just showed me how to use the strings."
"I see. How do you know her name?"
"She told me." Mauve said nonchalantly.
"She told you?"
Mauve looked up at Vae and the maid looked genuinely shocked.
"Why? What happened?"
"Nothing, it's just that none of them will have a conversation with me. I am just surprised she would tell you her name."
"Well, she seemed very nice."
"I am sure," Vae returned but her tone indicated otherwise. "Is there anything else you need?" She asked when Mauve was done eating.
"No," Mauve said and adjusted against the bed. She was quite full, maybe it was a little too early for her to eat after eating all that apple.
"Okay, if you need me. Don't hesitate to call. I will be back just before the second meal."
"I will try to get some sleep." But even as Mauve spoke, she knew she wasn't going to get any. She wasn't sleepy.
"You should, you have been up all day."
Mauve smiled and watched Vae walk out the door. She sank into bed, she couldn't lie down yet as she had just eaten. According to the maids in the castle, if she laid down after eating she would get a bloated stomach and nobody wanted a wife with a pot belly.
Mauve frowned, she wondered if the rules for a good wife for humans also applied to vampires and if their duties were the same.
Jael has not assigned her to do anything and she wondered if it was because he didn't consider her role or if their relationship was just in name only.
