Chapter 37: 37. Dark Corners

A couple hours earlier.

"Okay, would you like me to braid it?"

"Yes, please." The princess replied giddily.

"Alright," Vae chuckled.

She took the hairbrush and brushed all the hair to the side, choosing the princess's right side. After she was done, she dropped the hairbrush and proceeded to neatly braid all the hair into one big braid.

It was a bit of a hassle at the start as the princess had thick hair but it got easier towards the end. "All done." She announced.

"It is so pretty. Thank you Vae." Vae watched the princess arch her head from side to side, admiring Vae's work.

"Don't thank me," she said with a blush. "It is my duty. I will go tell the servants, you are ready to eat and bring your food along with me. I will be back in a few minutes." She bowed and walked towards the door.

She looked back to see the princess still looking at her reflection. Vae laughed under her breath and walked out the door. She closed it carefully behind her so as not to jolt the princess from the trance of staring at her reflection.

Standing in the pathway, she glanced towards the Vampire King's door remembering when she had impulsively knocked on it. She had been desperate then, and she still was but she knew better.

She walked towards the stairs and rapidly came down. She was headed to the kitchen, since she had taken some time getting the princess ready, the food must certainly be waiting for her.

She had expected a servant to bring it up while she was busy but she wasn't complaining, this was the only thing servants were sure she could accomplish, she would gladly do it.

She got to the end of the stairs in no time. The ballroom was dimly lit. She could see the path leading to the kitchen but the corners were pretty darker. She shivered at the thought of something hiding there, she wouldn't be able to see it.

As if her thoughts had a mind of their own, a hand stretched her out of the darkness and pulled her in. Vae opened her mouth to yell and a hand clamped over it. She was pressed against the wall and she felt pressure on her wrists as a hand grabbed both of them easily.

"Yapping your mouth earlier, weren't you?"

As soon as Vae heard the voice all the fear depleted from her body and a look of disgust appeared on her face. She had thought it was Paler knowing it was the annoying vampire was more irritating than scary.

The grip on her wrist eased up a little at her change in attitude but the grip immediately tightened. "You aren't frightened?" The voice asked. In the dark, she could barely make out his outline, let alone see his face.

She tried to talk but his hands still remained over her mouth so the sound remained in my throat.

"I know what you are doing, you want me to take my hand off your mouth so you can scream."

Was he five? She didn't expect a vampire to be this stupid but there was no doubt that this behavior was typical of what she heard about them.

Vae instantly stopped trying to talk and stared at him. She hated his guts and vice versa, he never tried to hide it but she never thought he would stoop this low. She must have really gotten on his nerves, she smirked at the thought.

"Something's funny?" He spat out, he was getting more pissed.

She glared at him wondering what his plan was but one thing was sure, she didn't have the time for this. The princess was waiting and she would rather not cause any drama.

He slowly let go of her mouth but the pressure on her wrist increased. She winced in pain as she tried to tough it out. "Can you do this later? I have to attend to the princess."

"Don't you think you should worry about yourself in this situation?"

"What are you going to do? Break my wrist, drink my blood, kill me?" She smirked. "You wouldn't dare. Even if you don't like it, I am a guest here."

"I could always say a Paler did," he said and Vae could feel his eyes move over her body. She shivered in disgust.

"Whoa, the Vampire King's castle isn't even protected from Paler. I can't wait for my king to hear this."

"Who said anything about inside? You sneaked out even though you know better and got torn to shreds by the monsters."

"Then do it, I couldn't have sneaked out far. The fact that this would happen in your King's territory will give him a bad name but go on, who am I to stop you? After all, I am sure you get thrills for going after humans, especially girls who are helpless against you."

The vampire's eyes glowed in the dark and his hand on her wrist tightened. A soft scream escaped her lips beside herself. She had pissed him off, she wasn't scared just worried that her hands would be in bad shape.

There was nothing scary about a bully, she had experienced enough in her line of work. Besides, she doubted anything could scare as The Vampire King had. This vampire would need at least a hundred years to come close.

"Mack!" A voice yelled. "What in the King's name do you think you are doing?"

Mack immediately let go as if her hands burnt him, the glow in his eyes disappeared and he took a step back. Vae heard the sound of a tray hitting the ground and barely two seconds later she heard a smack that vibrated in the empty room.

Vae didn't need anybody to tell her that if Mill had smacked her that way, she would be on the other side of the room with broken bones.

"Are you out of your mind?" She sounded calm. A little too calm. Vae heard Mack shuffle backward in an attempt to put space between Mill and him.

"You owe the Primus your… We owe the Primus our life and this is how you repay him, by manhandling his guest."

Silence.

"Leave! Before I drag you upstairs and offer you to him, he can skin you for all I care." Mack fled as soon as the words were out of Mill's lips, she barely heard his footsteps as he ran.

Mill bowed her head, "I am sorry for my brother's behavior and I would prefer if you keep this from your mistress."

Mill sounded pained as she spoke. Vae wasn't sure which was more painful for her, witnessing her brother's behavior or the fact that she had to bow to a human.

Vae rubbed her wrists as she tried to ease the pain. She winced, they were definitely sprained. "What's in it for me then?"

Mill gasped and Vae smirked. She could tell that the vampire had thought her apology was enough. It was but Vae wanted to see what she could get out of this.

She raised her head slowly, "What do you want?"

Vae smiled, she could feel Mill's gaze. She could also feel the anger in them. Vae chuckled, "Nothing."

She heard a soft sigh and she imagined Mill's shoulder relaxing.

"Thank you for bringing the tray, I will take it from here." She started walking away from the walls and towards the light.

"But your wrists?" Mill asked and followed after her.

"Worried? I will be fine, it's just a little sprain besides I need to give the princess an excuse, or else she would be worried. You want to keep this from her, right?"

"Why aren't you angrier? I didn't expect you to want compensation but now that I think about it, you deserve it. What my brother did was…"

"What good would that do? My job is not to make the princess's life harder, she already has it hard being stuck here." Vae spun around staring at the castle. "I'd rather die."

She bent to pick the tray but Mill beat her to it. "Let me help you to the door."

"How nice of you but you don't have to." Vae protested and stretched her hands to take it away from Mill.

"It is the least I can do. For not selling my brother out."

Vae took a step forward, "Don't thank me yet. I can still do it."

"I know you won't," Mill said with her head bowed.

"Trusting a human, you should follow in your brother's footsteps. We can be quite vicious."

"Not as vampires, you don't come close." Mill's eyes glowed.

Vae smiled, "Don't get all anxious. As if said, my job is not to make the princess's life any harder."

"You sound like you have a lot of respect for her."

"Not really but she has done something I can't."

"Which is?" Mill frowned.

"She has found a way to be happy here, maybe not happy but I know she won't try to leave. I could never. Thank you," she stretched out her hands.

Mill looked skeptical but she placed the tray in Vae's hands without any argument.

"Could you knock for me, please?"

Mill knocked twice and the princess said, "Come in."
