The Vampire King's Possession-Chapter 60 - . I Could Never Stay
Chapter 60: 60. I Could Never Stay
"Knew?" The Vampire King asked with a frown but Vae could not see this as she had her head bent and was staring hard at her toes.
It was taking all her willpower to not run away from here. However, this was something that she had to see the end of. Now that she has proof, there was no reason for her to be here anymore.
"That's what you meant by bloodstained sheets. I thought you humans had a weird ritual or you expected me to bleed her out enough to stain the sheets." He slowly shook his head as he spoke.
"Yes," she replied and her head remained bent.
"And this is normal for human females."
Vae nodded.
"I see," he said. "Often?"
"No, just the first time, your grace."
"Okay. Is she asleep?"
"Not yet, she is eating in bed."
"Is there anything else?"
Vae froze and her eyes darted from one side to another. She didn't know how to say what she had to say but there was no way she was leaving his presence before asking. She doubted she would have the courage to ask and she definitely couldn't ask the princess for help.
"Out with it!" He ordered and she jerked.
He wasn't helping but she found that his order had broken her free from her thoughts.
"I need to get to the human kingdom, your grace." Vae's head was still bent and at this point, she could feel a slight pain in her neck and waist.
"You are leaving?" He asked.
"Yes," she said. "I have to deliver the sheets."
Jael's eyes turned to slits. "I will order the guards to escort you tomorrow."
Vae shook her head vigorously. "Tonight, sire." She muttered. "Please, it has to be tonight."
The tension in the air intensified and Vae brought her hand to her chest as she felt fear crawl up her spine.
"There is only about an hour till sunset. No one should have to take this risk on such short notice. All because you humans have weird traditions."
Vae felt her eyes water.
"Hiding in the corner doesn't suit you, Damon!"
Vae blinked and from the corner of her eyes, she could see Damon walk towards them even though she could see him coming, she couldn't hear him coming.
"I know you have something to say, out with it. You have been eavesdropping for quite a while," the Vampire King said to Damon while she stood in the middle of them with her heart in her throat.
"Eavesdropping makes it sound as though I was trying to hide my prese… I will take her." Damon said as he realized the King was in no mood for shenanigans.
"You jest! You barely survived transporting the princess and you had Danag and Erick with you. You won't come back unscathed."
"I appreciate your concern, sire but I have no intention to be as slow as a carriage."
"What do you intend?" The Vampire King's voice dropped lower as he tried to understand what Damon was telling him.
"It will take three nights of a carriage ride to get to the human kingdom, I intend to take her in one. As soon as she gets out of the Nolands I will return."
"It will take you at least a full night because of the extra weight. You won't be able to return before sunrise."
"I know, I will sort it out."
The Vampire King sighed, "As long as you return safely. You can do as you like and don't you dare die."
Vae heard the sound of the closed door and her body relaxed. She staggered but didn't fall. She turned to face Damon's shoes, "Thank you."
"Don't thank me yet," he then started to walk away. "I will see you at the main entrance in precisely one hour."
Vae nodded vigorously at his retreating figure. She raised her head to see him climb up the stairs. Alone, at last, she quickly made her way back to Mauve's room. She did not knock before entering just in case the princess was asleep.
She pushed the door open and sure enough, Mauve was fast asleep on the bed. Vae walked closer to her and smiled faintly at her. She didn't want to leave without telling the princess but she knew she wouldn't be able to handle the guilt if she did.
"Forgive me, princess." She whispered and took the sheets.

She slowly walked out of the door without a backward glance and Vae felt her heart squeeze but she knew she had to leave. She had to go back to where she belonged, she didn't belong here.
She closed the door softly and headed for the servant section. Vae passed the door and came back. She knocked once and twice before the door opened.
"Vae," Mill said while rubbing her eyes. "This better be important, I only have twenty minutes before I have to start preparing breakfast."
"It is!" Vae said stiffly.
Mill dropped her hand to her side and straightened her back. "Does this have to do with what happened to the princess earlier?" Her brow furrowed in worry.
"Yes and no. I am leaving."
Mill blinked. "What? Why?"
"My job here is done, I can't explain. However, I want to leave the princess in your hands. It is a strange land and there is nobody else I can ask." Vae's eyes watered. "She is but a child that doesn't know anything. Doesn't have any friends, and doesn't even have any family. I hate to leave her but I can't stay. I could never stay."
She started to walk away.
"Vae," Mill called.
"Would you ever come back?"
She slowly shook her head and slipped into her room.
Vae closed her door and rested her back against the closed door. Tears were streaming down her face. Who would have thought she would be sad to leave?
When the Queen had given her the order, she had been annoyed, and angry even though she had known since the first day that she wouldn't be staying here forever, she did not like the idea and couldn't understand why she was chosen.
Now, she knew she wouldn't have refused even if she could. She picked the only properties she had brought along. A few articles of clothing and nothing of importance.
She just picked one in case she would need a change of clothes at some point. She folded the sheets and wrapped them up properly. This was more important than her life, if she lost it she would have failed her vision.
When Vae received her orders, she could not comprehend why this didn't happen under the Queen's guidance but from the Queen's agitation, she knew they would rather do it the hard way than make the vampires or the princess stay under the castle roof.
Vae winced as she remembered Queen Lale's smile. She doubted she had ever seen the Queen happy or that pleased with herself. She had finally rid herself of the thorn in her flesh.
Vae took her change of cloth and wrapped it too. She carefully packaged them separately, making sure there was no way she could lose this.
Certain that she was not forgetting anything, she spun around and stared at the place that was her home for a little over two weeks. Heavens knew it felt longer. She would have sworn she had been stuck here for months.
She picked up the package and headed to the main entrance. She had time, she could still see the princess before she left but Vae didn't. She stood by the door waiting.
"Vae," she heard a voice say after some time had passed. She turned to see Mill holding a bowl of food and stretched it to her. "I guess even I would want to leave quickly if I was in a strange land."
"Thank you," she said and accepted the bowl, still standing.
She knew she should take a seat and eat but she knew she would be able to sit still so she ate standing up. She took a spoon and her stomach growled. She had been so anxious, she didn't realize how hungry she was.
"Did you tell Mauve?" Mill asked as she watched Vae eat.
Vae shook her head, "I couldn't."
"I see," Mill said but didn't say more.
"Thank you," Vae muttered as she handed the bowl to her.
"You're welcome," she said and nodded to her. Mill looked as though she was about to say more but decided against it. "Be safe, and may the moon protect you." She touched Vae's palm and walked away.
Vae brought the hand to her chest and leaned against the wall. She stared into the dark open space as she waited. She wondered what the ballroom would look like all lit up.
"Are you ready?" A voice said directly into her ears.
Vae gasped, she had not heard or seen him walk up to her. "Yes," she replied without hesitation.
