Chapter 164 -3: The Fox’s Tail
Rebry couldn’t explain the origins of the castle either; in his view, the so-called lord of the castle was probably just a pretender. There must have been others lurking behind this lord, as the magic array was hidden very secretly, using the obelisk as a guiding object. Moreover, the textual symbols were all in ancient script, unnoticeable to ordinary people. Even if spotted, they wouldn’t understand them. If it hadn’t been for his prior mental preparation, he would have been unable to uncover the secrets of this magic array.
However, it was clear that the magic array needed a magical artifact to trigger and operate it, which might also be time-limited.
Gazing into the sky, Rebry lamented that it was broad daylight; if it were nighttime, he could determine whether the magic array was a powerful Ancient Starry Sky Magic Array, a long-lost but still much-discussed teleportation magic array among mages.
It was said that it could easily transport people or objects to different locations in the blink of an eye. However, now there were very few mages who practiced Star Magic, and it demanded a considerable natural talent for magic. Over time, this magic had become rare in the world.
The Puppet’s exploration didn’t yield much of value. It visited every room from the first floor column corridor to the second floor, failing to trigger any additional magical prohibitions or traps. But the subsequent search proved exceptionally rewarding for the trio. In a storage room on the east side of the first floor, they found over a hundred barrels of grape wine that were at least several decades old. The dry and cool environment was ideal for wine preservation, a stash that could belong to a winery. The property left by some lord was enough to make the three of them ecstatic.
In the living quarters at the west end of the second floor, though the pearwood furniture was covered in dust, Komer knew, with just a gentle pinch, that these antiques were at least two hundred years old. The style, with strong influence from Florenti in the mainland southern region, displayed exquisite craftsmanship and beautiful carving, especially a few carved long chairs and recliners, and a pleasure chair used by nobles during their indulgence, which had slightly lascivious patterns. The sculptor’s hand had brought such vividness to these pieces that even the expressions on the faces depicted were exquisitely accurate.
The messy library attracted the trio’s focus, filled as it was with a hodgepodge of books that sprawled across three large rooms. It seemed they had been neglected for many years, but to their surprise, almost none of the books were damaged by insects or dampness. Despite many bookshelves having collapsed and books scattered everywhere, this did not distract the trio from their focus and importance.
Although a quick look did not reveal anything of value, Komer believed that such a large-scale library, even in Jazair, would be notable. The number of secrets it held was perhaps only discoverable with careful study at leisure.
After a cursory examination, the trio meticulously searched for other hidden facilities throughout the castle. Rebry and the Dark Knight’s experience was invaluable at this time.
Perhaps due to their extensive exploration experience, the two had a strong understanding of the structure of such castles designed for nobles. They quickly found a secret compartment in a room at the northeast corner on the first floor. According to Rebry’s deduction, there should be an entrance to a basement here. Although the compartment was easily opened, even Komer sensed a strong presence of magic power inside. It was obviously protected by magical prohibitions, specifically, a very dangerous dual magic prohibition.
The Dark Class’s corrosive aura and the strong scent of Earth Element deterred them from acting rashly, especially since the large earth-based magic was established against the wall, interdependent with the castle walls. Although they could forcibly break the prohibitions, it could potentially lead to the walls cracking and collapsing, or even damage that section of the castle. This was something Komer, in particular, did not wish to see.
After some discussion, they decided not to dismantle the prohibitions for the time being. They would wait until the situation was stable and they had ample time to slowly figure out a solution.
In a large room near the corner in the southwest direction, the trio once again came across a clip wall. Rebry’s keen gaze made Komer marvel; just by passing through two rooms, he noticed the walls were disproportionately thick, inferring a hidden clip wall. Using a specially made detection magic wand, Rebry also deduced that there was a rather large passage below the clip wall. As to where it led and what secrets the lower levels held, they could not guess.
However, as expected, various concealed symbols and patterns on the walls outside the clip wall in the room confirmed that a magic array seal had been set here. After prolonged contemplation in front of the wall, aside from surmising that it was an old Dark Class magic, possibly related to Psychic Magic, Rebry was at a loss, and so was the Dark Knight Sorrenberger. He too inferred that beyond the magic array, there surely were physical traps and attack mechanisms set up. A slight misstep might even result in the destruction of the castle and their demise.
