Chapter 25: Chapter 25: Melora Moretti

"A Snake Clan Beastman?" Evangeline was a little surprised.

’A One Star Pattern Snake Clan Beastman, probably not even an adult yet, dares to venture to the edge of the Hunting Grounds?’

"HISS— HISSS—"

The bright green python thrashed wildly, its body like a lively ribbon of green silk, kicking up clouds of dust.

It struggled with all its might. A torrent of earthy yellow power surged from its body, causing the ground to churn. Clumps of dirt and grass quickly gathered at its side, forming an earthen wall in the blink of an eye.

She was fighting desperately for a sliver of hope, but it was all futile in the face of the Four-star Patterned Beast.

The Falcon’s eyes glinted with a cold light, its sharp talons digging deep into the python’s body. Every one of its feathers stood on end in excitement. It beat its wings, intending to fly off with the python and enjoy its meal away from the cliff face.

The python’s eyes were dim and lifeless. Glistening tears even slid down its scales.

Evangeline tilted her head, curiously observing the crying snake.

She flicked her fingers, tracing a sharp arc in the air. In an instant, the water vapor around Evangeline seemed to be drawn by an unseen force, rapidly converging and condensing into a sharp Water Arrow in the blink of an eye.

Then, with a sharp WHOOSH, the Water Arrow tore through the air, shooting toward the Falcon!

The Falcon seemed to sense the immense danger. It shrieked, its talons loosened, and the bright green python tumbled to the ground, its snowy white belly exposed. It was hard to tell if it was scared stiff by Evangeline or just dazed from the fall.

The Falcon fixed its sharp gaze on Evangeline for a moment before spreading its wings and flying away.

A Four-star Patterned Beast already possessed a certain level of intelligence. Sensing danger, it naturally wouldn’t seek a head-on confrontation.

Evangeline turned to look at the python lying on its back, walked over, and gave it a kick. "Dead?"

In the next instant, the python’s body changed drastically at a speed visible to the naked eye. With a CRACKLE of bones, its long, winding form gradually stretched and extended. Its scales rapidly receded, and it transformed into a Beastman.

"A female?" Evangeline was even more surprised. ’First Verdant, now a Snake Clan female. Heh, what great luck. Other people who transmigrate get to save handsome men. How come I only get females?’

Evangeline pursed her lips, looking down at the female who had transformed into a Beastman. Her body was covered in bloody holes from the Falcon’s talons. She struggled to get up, only to collapse back down in pain, and then began to cry. "I’m going to die! I’ll never see my father, mother, or brothers again—"

Evangeline’s eyes narrowed. "What’s a female like you doing in the Hunting Grounds?"

Hearing Evangeline’s voice, Melora Moretti rolled over, grimacing in pain.

Only then did Evangeline realize that this Snake Clan female was quite a pretty little thing. She had slender eyes, a delicate nose, and constantly trembling lips—a truly pitiable sight. It was just that she looked a little familiar.

With tear-filled eyes, Melora Moretti stared hopefully at Evangeline. After a long moment, she blurted out, "You’re so ugly! Are you a female from the Midridge Tribe? How are you so strong? How did you beat a Four-star Patterned Beast?"

Evangeline’s mouth twitched. She felt the urge to slap her.

However, seeing the injuries on Melora Moretti’s body, she held back. She was afraid one slap might just send the girl to the afterlife. After all, she had just saved her with her own two hands. She hadn’t gotten any reward yet; wouldn’t killing her be a losing deal?

’Heh, kids say the darndest things. She’s just a child. Who argues with a child?’

Evangeline ignored her questions and asked, "Are you a female from the Grymdale Tribe?"

Melora Moretti nodded. "My name is Melora Moretti! I’m the child of Morgan Moretti, the leader of the Grymdale Tribe, and Lana!"

Although she was grimacing in pain, she wore a look of immense pride as she introduced herself.

Evangeline sized up Melora Moretti and finally understood why the brat looked so familiar. ’Isn’t this just a female version of Elias Moretti? Melora Moretti... so she’s Elias Moretti’s full-blooded sister?’

’A pair of siblings, one a red snake, the other a green one. How in the world did the same parents produce them?’

A suspicious look on her face, Evangeline found herself deeply puzzled by the reproductive mysteries of the Beastman Continent.

"What is a female like you doing on the edge of the Hunting Grounds?" Evangeline knelt, applying some medicinal powder to Melora Moretti’s wounds. ’Since she’s Elias Moretti’s sister, that also makes her Thorne’s sister. I can’t just stand by and do nothing.’

"I..." Melora Moretti was initially wary, but as she smelled the medicinal scent, she gradually relaxed. A hint of reliance crept into her gaze as she looked at Evangeline. Her nose twitched, and her eyes reddened again.

"I came to find Brother Orion!" she stammered, her expression turning somber.

"??" Evangeline was speechless, not understanding at all.

However, she didn’t press the matter. She pulled Melora Moretti to her feet and pointed toward the path out of the Hunting Grounds. "Alright, little brat, go home. Remember to tell your father and mother that I’m the one who saved you."

After speaking, Evangeline intended to go down the cliff to have a look. But she had only taken two steps when Melora Moretti threw her arms around her waist, wailing at the top of her lungs, "No! I don’t want to go! I won’t leave until I see Brother Orion!"

"Oh, then you can just die here," Evangeline said with a nod. She didn’t try to stop her, simply pushing Melora Moretti aside. She stood at the cliff’s edge, stretched her back, and in the next moment, leaped gracefully down.

Melora Moretti stood at the edge of the cliff, staring in a daze at Evangeline, who had jumped down in her humanoid form.

She gritted her teeth. Fearing the Falcon might return, she transformed back into her beast form and slithered down the cliff face, following behind Evangeline. She watched with wide eyes as Evangeline grabbed onto the vines on the cliff, swinging from one to the next with a fluid, beautiful grace.

Evangeline’s eyes lit up as she spotted the Ganoderma herbs growing on the cliff face.

’This place is a real treasure trove!’

"Why are you picking those?" Melora Moretti followed closely behind, watching Evangeline harvest the plants with some confusion.

’Females only gather edible wild fruits. I’ve never seen these before. Are they edible?’

Evangeline glanced at her and said lazily, "These are medicinal herbs. They can save Thorne."

As soon as she said it, Evangeline keenly detected a complex expression on Melora Moretti’s serpentine face. The young snake stared at Evangeline for a while before whispering, "The female who caused a scene at the totem ceremony last night... that was you, wasn’t it?"

"You weren’t there yesterday?" Evangeline looked at Melora Moretti suspiciously. ’Isn’t everyone supposed to attend the totem ceremony?’

Melora Moretti looked listless. "I was hiding in a cave and didn’t come out. I didn’t want to watch Brother Thorne..."

Hearing this, Evangeline paused, a little surprised. ’After all, Thorne is like a wall everyone is pushing over now that it’s collapsing. No one in the Grymdale Tribe can stand him. I didn’t expect someone to still be reluctant to see him go.’

"Thorne’s Serpent Star Pattern is shattered, and he’s about to die. The totem ceremony to pray for The Beast God’s forgiveness is a good thing. Why wouldn’t you want to watch him die?" Evangeline’s hands didn’t slow down, but her inquiry was casual.

’This Melora Moretti seems silly and naive, not at all like she was born from the same parents as Elias Moretti. But who knows if it’s just an act?’

The Beastman Continent might have retained its most primitive appearance—with its pristine mountains and lakes, and its simple, rustic tribal architecture, everything seemed to be in a nascent, unenlightened stage—but this was all just a facade.

Every Beastman here concealed a mysterious and formidable special power. These powers not only gave them physiques far superior to ordinary people but also greatly developed their intellect.

Camouflage, after all, was a hunter’s instinct, innate to all Beastmen.
