The Void's System-Chapter 48: Wings of Shadow
Chapter 48 - Wings of Shadow
The void echoed with the sound of clashing magic and shouts of frustration.
Zane flew back again, his body aching from another one of Nyx's flawless takedowns. No matter how many blades he conjured or traps he set, she countered everything with effortless grace.
He collapsed onto one knee, panting.
"Again?" Nyx asked, standing tall with her staff casually slung over her shoulder. "Or are you done pretending to be weak?"
Zane clenched his fists. That word again. Weak.
He hated it.
He had been pushed around in his old world, barely anyone. Here too — always underestimated, always doubted. And now, even in this realm of endless potential, he couldn't land a solid blow on Nyx.
"I'm not weak..." he muttered.
"What was that?" she asked, tilting her head.
"I SAID I'M NOT WEAK!"
He slammed his hand on the ground, and something snapped. Not in pain — in power.
Darkness surged.
The shadows that had once obeyed like sluggish liquid now answered like a storm. They raced up his limbs, twisting around his body, wrapping him in a sleek, armored form of black and violet energy.
His face was the last to vanish, covered in a smooth, obsidian mask. Only his eyes — now glowing with deep purple light — remained visible through slits of energy.
Nyx paused. "Oh?"
Zane stood tall — no longer struggling, no longer exhausted. He looked... reborn.
He extended a hand, and wings made of rippling shadows burst from his back. Angelic in shape, but unmistakably void-touched.
Then he took flight.
From high above, he raised a hand and willed the darkness to fall. Arrows of shadow rained down like a storm of vengeance.
Nyx's eyes narrowed. She backflipped through the barrage, dancing around the bolts. The ground cracked beneath each impact.
But just as it seemed Zane had turned the tide—
Nyx raised her palm and whispered something in the ancient tongue of the Void.
A wave of calm pulsed out, and all the arrows froze mid-air... then disintegrated.
Zane landed, gasping — the armor slowly melting away into mist.
He expected a smirk, or another taunt.
Instead, Nyx was different.
She stepped forward — not in her shadowy, formless state, but in her true appearance. Her cloak faded, revealing a woman of striking beauty: dark violet hair cascading like ink, eyes that shimmered like twin galaxies, and smooth onyx skin touched with faint glowing runes along her arms.
She was radiant in a haunting, celestial way — a being of both beauty and ancient power.
"Congratulations," she said with a gentle smile. "You finally stopped fighting like a scared child."
Zane stared, still catching his breath. "That... form. Was that really you?"
Nyx nodded. "My true form. I figured you'd earned the right to see it."
He blinked. "You're... beautiful."
Nyx chuckled. "Careful, mortal. Compliments like that might get you into trouble."
They both laughed.
But deep down, Zane knew something had changed. Not just his power — but his bond with Nyx, and his place in this strange new world.
