The X Guide-Chapter 112: Finding Khal (2)
When did Khal fail? Devion only thought of one instance. And it was related to him.
The two fell silent, walking side by side. It was not for long, and they arrived at the institute branch building. Both organization branch buildings were always built near each other.
In most cases, esper dorms were located in the association building, and the institute served as the hospital instead. It seemed the same was true in this branch.
When they entered the building, the standing guard there did not stop them. He probably recognized Devion’s body. They proceeded inside and checked most rooms.
The doctors and staff were bewildered, but none stopped them. In the end, their searches were fruitless. None of them exhibits any Khal’s traits.
"He’s not here, either." Devion let out a frustrated sigh. The two sat in one of the balconies on the second floor.
Obviously, it was not high enough to overlook a significant portion of the town, but they could still observe the streets and the people passing by.
The Institute building was located in a prime location after all, and the bustling of crowds never ceased. Although it was almost late in the afternoon.
"Khal’s probably an ordinary person."
It could not be helped. Ayen did not want to believe it, but that was the only answer they had.
"Heh," Devion smirked. "Even he has this day too."
Although they were in this situation, Devion could not wait to see Khal and his reaction. Of course, even if Khal had somehow inhabited an ordinary person’s body, they were not worried at all.
Ayen could only shake his head, but he did calm down seeing Devion acting like his usual self. It meant the curse was not tormenting him.
After a few seconds, Devion became serious.
"Where to, next?"
Ayen arched his brow. "Why am I deciding?"
Devion shrugged with a smile. "I want to slack off."
So much for being honest. Just this once, he would let it slide. Especially if he was grinning like that.
Ayen averted his gaze and looked at the streets.
"The dungeon? We can visit there first."
"You think an esper there is Khal?"
He could not blame Ayen if he did not give up yet and only wanted to check most espers first. Devion also had the same thought. They could only do it this way.
They did not need to ask where the dungeons were located. Devion could sense the mana fluctuations it emitted. It just so happened that both dungeons were in the same direction.
Again, they took action. However, this time, Devion decided to borrow one of the cars in the institute. They had been walking since earlier, and the distance between the association and the institute was that far.
The dungeon gate was a considerable distance from the town. Actually, he just did not want to waste time walking when they could drive there instead.
It was also as he said. He wanted to slack off. Ayen welcomed the idea, and so they checked the availability, and with Devion’s persuasion skills, they managed to borrow one.
"He’s terrified," Ayen pointed at the staff who almost fainted at Devion’s persuasion. Devion grinned at him.
Ayen was not that worried about the man; he only pointed it out in passing. Devion also knew that, so he merely replied with a grin.
Along the way, Ayen still checked the streets. Devion was doing the same. He could drive without fully paying attention. Unfortunately, most were just curious who was inside the car, and none acted like Khal.
Cars were expensive to maintain, and so ordinary people could not afford one. It was not that inconvenient since public transportation was provided by the government.
In this town, though, it was not that common. So, they earned gazes and attention along the way.
Once they left the gate, Ayen voiced out his assumptions.
"Do you think we’re really in the past?" He explained to Devion his initial plan after waking up before Diana spotted him.
Devion thought for a moment. "I’m not sure. But we’re probably not in the past."
Ayen noticed the uncertainty in his voice despite saying he was not sure. This made Ayen become lost in his thoughts again while staring at Devion’s profile.
He was pretty certain. Why? Perhaps because time was truly not simple. Devion was only being realistic.
Devion glanced at Ayen, but he did not say anything more and concentrated on driving.
There was a time when he suddenly wanted to turn back time. He did not know from what time specifically. There were a lot of regrets in his life.
It was merely a dream; he never actually tried to find out how. It just clicked into him one time.
He could not wallow in his past anymore. He only needed to move forward. Devion did not want Ayen to suddenly have designs for the past.
Devion knew how miserable it was.
They all had their regrets and failures. Changing the past did not mean those memories faded. He might also regret it if he were the only one remembering the memories, no matter how dark they were.
At least, from Devion’s perspective.
"We’re here," Devion muttered.
The two looked at each other, then nodded.
They exited the car and looked around. Ayen first glanced at the dungeon gates. Yes, gates. The two were actually beside each other.
Both were A-class dungeons.
"The government’s crazy," Ayen did not hold back. If he was used to cursing, he already did.
Devion also narrowed his eyes. He tried to remember, but found he did not have impressions of this town incident. The government might have buried the news, or it happened in the year when Khal locked him up somewhere.
During that time, Devion did not have access to the outside world. The answer was between the two.
"This is alarming enough to send one or two S-class espers." Devion shook his head in disappointment.
He always knew that the government had already become rotten, even before they awakened, but they always proved it every time. It was as though they were afraid of this fact being forgotten.
Ayen frowned and did not respond. His eyes swept over the people there. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
It was crazy. The highest were B-class espers, and there were three at most. Not counting the staff, there were only eight espers present.
Ayen felt the same sensation when the dungeon break happened.
Everyone was going to die.
