Chapter 127: Subordinate Contract

Both the governments and the clans, especially the elite clans, had to be cleaned up. Elimination might be the best course of action, but that was not what Khal wanted.

Doing so would weaken the overall combat capability of humanity. He only needed the large tumors to be cut off, and the rest could be cured gradually.

In fact, Khal did not see the need to.

Khal and Devion were the most powerful espers, but they could not just use brute force to wipe them all out. They were already seen as monsters, and their intervention might escalate the war even further.

As he said, their involvement only leads to one of the two outcomes. The war ending early or escalating beyond what they could control. There was no in-between.

Ending early brought no benefits. Otherwise, why would they turn a blind eye to both forces’ actions?

Khal had been waiting for the perfect opportunity. It was not yet time.

Ayen was unaware of Khal’s thoughts; he was more focused on the child. Upon learning of what happened, it was harder now to look at the cute child as an anomaly.

He was, but also not.

The child might have transformed into something akin to a mana disturbance source, but his soul remained human. His age seemed to be stuck at four years old, with little progress because he never moved forward.

With the isolation of this town, the child remained in the past.

The three let the child cry until he gradually calmed down with soft sniffles at the end. Ayen wiped his tears again before he pulled his hand away.

They gave him another few minutes to recover. The three could not be found to be harsh to him.

"Did anyone visit here before?" Ayen asked curiously. He wanted to start the second round of conversation, as Khal or Devion would not ask a lighthearted question.

At least Devion might have, but Khal seemed unlikely.

The child shook his head.

"I, I closed the door." His words were simple enough, but they had to do with his ability, and so Ayen did not make an effort to comprehend them.

"We trespassed on your territory then," Devion had a smile on his lips, joking.

Perhaps because the child failed to perceive Devion’s joking tone, he widened his eyes and quickly shook his head.

"No, no, I..." The child suddenly could not continue anymore, his small hands fidgeting in his lap again. He looked scared and confused.

Ayen glared at Devion and then appeased the child. Devion’s lips faded, and he heard Khal snicker from his side.

Devion narrowed his eyes and mouthed a curse to Khal. Earlier, he did not tease him when Ayen glared at Khal. Now the other was laughing at him?

Khal felt Devion’s foot kicking him, and his lips hooked up in a smile. He ignored it and even moved his foot so their feet would touch.

Devion knew that every time he did something to Khal, it was like punching a cotton ball and stopped bothering him anymore.

"What are your plans from now on?" Khal was more straightforward. Although he was a child, Khal still saw him as more of a monster than a human now.

Of course, he was cute, and so Khal’s tone was gentle and not harsh. In reality, it was not because of the child’s cuteness but Ayen’s attention that made Khal soften his tone.

The child turned to him, fear evident in his gaze.

"We’re espers, and we can’t ignore your existence." Khal spouted some bullshit. When, in reality, he already thought of how to deal with the child.

Devion glanced at him. Ayen also did the same. Khal thought Ayen would speak for the child, seeing his earlier actions. However, Ayen merely listened and did not interrupt.

Khal’s understanding of Ayen was not deep enough, after all.

The story of the mother and the child stirred his emotions, but it was not enough to prioritize them over his espers. In Ayen’s heart and mind, which was only starting to open again, Khal and Devion’s affairs were more important.

Of course, only second to his own.

The child paused and lifted his gaze to meet Khal’s eyes.

"I know, that..." He pursed his lips; the child clasped his small hands together. "I’ll stay here. I won’t, harm..."

Khal stared at the child. To his surprise, the child did not avert his gaze despite the obvious fear in his eyes. It was like the child was showing his determination and sincerity.

Interesting...

"But that’s not enough."

Khal’s words made the child crestfallen, but his next words made the child’s ears perk up again.

"We need a guarantee. That you won’t harm any innocents."

"Guarantee? What, should I do?" The child was confused, but he seemed to understand somewhat without Khal explaining.

Devion listened with interest; the corners of his lips arched up.

Khal was about to scam someone again. He has heard and seen this scene countless times. How else did he amass such immense forces under him? 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

Devion would never admit that Khal truly had the charm and authority of a leader. Otherwise, Khal would brag about it for years.

Ayen had no idea what Khal was planning and could only listen until the end. He also agreed that despite the anomaly looking like a harmless child and technically having a human soul, who could guarantee that he would not undergo any transformation in the near future?

Khal glanced at Ayen, grinned, and looked back at the child.

"Form a subordinate contract with Ayen."

Devion’s brow rose, but he quickly recovered, and he almost jumped up from his seat. "Wow. What a good idea you have there, babe." He exclaimed.

When he had such a huge outburst of emotions, the endearment often slipped out of his mouth. Khal shrugged, but he looked happy being complimented by Devion.

Ayen and the child were both confused.

"What do you mean?" Ayen asked, wanting for Khal to explain.

He did not think it was a simple contract that needed legal bindings. After all, he did not think a human law could bind an anomaly.

"Contract?" The child also blinked his eyes at them.

Devion was the one who responded this time, eyes shining. Since this territory was more his than Khal’s. The moment that Khal suggested it, he already realized its possibility.
