(Chapter Nine)
“You’re late,” Phoenix, wearing a mask and standing with a kingly demeanor in the courtyard of the sanatorium where Li Haiyang resided, looked at Luo Ziling, Yang Xiaodong, and Wang Zhenjun as they entered the courtyard after passing through the security gate. Her voice was icy as she said, “It’s 8:32 now. You’re two minutes late.”
“When you spotted us, it wasn’t yet 8:30, wasn’t it? It’s your troublesome security checks that wasted several minutes of our time,” Luo Ziling replied irritably before approaching Phoenix, “Even if we are late, it’s only by two minutes. What’s the big deal?”
“Two minutes is enough time for you to die several times over,” Phoenix said, shifting her gaze from Luo Ziling to Yang Xiaodong and Wang Zhenjun who were behind him, her eyes becoming even sharper.
To Luo Ziling’s surprise, Yang Xiaodong and Wang Zhenjun, usually nonchalant and always laughing, turned very serious upon entering the courtyard and seeing Phoenix, showing no sign of levity.
What surprised him even more was when, under Phoenix’s gaze, both men simultaneously stepped forward and stood at attention, giving her a salute.
...
Phoenix also returned the salute, but her expression remained unchanged, her tone still frosty as she asked, “Snow Sculpture and Dull Bird from Snow Fox?”
“Yes!” Yang Xiaodong and Wang Zhenjun responded in unison, still standing ramrod straight, like subordinates facing a superior.
Seeing the two of them acting so formally in front of Phoenix irritated Luo Ziling.
They were his bodyguards, and in front of him, their “master,” they were always playful and smiling. However, in front of Phoenix, a stranger, they behaved with such respect. Naturally, he felt uncomfortable inside.
“Hey, you two,” Luo Ziling complained loudly to them, completely disregarding Phoenix standing before him, “Did I bring you to meet someone from Dragon Rise so you could act like grandsons? Have some backbone, will you? And another thing, Phoenix is a woman, and you’re men. How can you lack the pride of a man?”
That Luo Ziling would speak this way, and to say such things in front of Phoenix while on Dragon Rise’s territory, stunned Yang Xiaodong and Wang Zhenjun.
They saw Phoenix’s gaze grow colder and couldn’t help but sweat for Luo Ziling.
But Luo Ziling ignored Phoenix’s reaction and instead asked Yang Xiaodong and Wang Zhenjun, “You asked me to bring you here to meet the people from Dragon Rise. Now that you’ve met, what do you want to do? Fight Phoenix to see who’s tougher? Or have some tea with her and share training experiences?”
Yang Xiaodong and Wang Zhenjun stared blankly at Luo Ziling, unable to comprehend why he dared to be so audacious in front of Phoenix. They feared Luo Ziling might have offended someone from Dragon Rise and could be retaliated against, so they were a little worried.
They were even more afraid their response would anger Phoenix, and therefore did not answer Luo Ziling’s question.
Phoenix, the team leader of Dragon Rise, was a woman of incredible strength; this much was crystal clear to Yang Xiaodong and Wang Zhenjun.
They were also keenly aware of the deterrent power and strength of Dragon Rise. This elite special forces unit of Huaxia was comprised of top talents in various fields. It wasn’t just their combat proficiency that was formidable, but their overall capabilities were outstanding. Compared to them, “Snow Fox” still had quite a gap.
After all, “Snow Fox” only belonged to a certain combat zone.
The one advantage “Snow Fox” had was that their capability in high-altitude and cold regions was superior to that of Dragon Rise.
However, most of Huaxia’s enemies are not in the cold regions, and since Luo Xusheng, the head of the house, prefers to keep a low profile, Snow Fox’s special skills are not fully recognized by other brother units, and in terms of influence, it certainly cannot compare with Dragon Rise.
Facing the captain of Dragon Rise, Yang Xiaodong and Wang Zhenjun still dared not show any disrespect, let alone any provocation.
To Yang Xiaodong and Wang Zhenjun’s surprise, Luo Ziling’s naked provocation and belittlement made them fear that if he annoyed Phoenix, he would get severely beaten and thrown out like a dead dog.
They were thinking, if Phoenix and her comrades decided to teach Luo Ziling a lesson later, whether they should step in to help or not.
They knew clearly that if they did step in to help, it would ultimately not change the outcome. After all, two fists can’t stand against four legs— even if they joined in to help, they would inevitably not be able to avoid a beating. But to their surprise, Phoenix ultimately did not get angry, nor did she beat up Luo Ziling.
“The commander is waiting for you; you can go in,” Phoenix said to Luo Ziling with an icy tone, not showing any other reaction.
“Alright, I’ll look for you later,” Luo Ziling did not refuse, as he had already grown accustomed to Phoenix’s demeanor, “I have some rather important matters to discuss with you. Wait for me later.”
Phoenix did not reply, only nodding her head slightly to show she understood.
Luo Ziling did not care what the two men and one woman were going to do next, whether it would be a full-on fight or just a casual chat. He went straight to the small building where Li Haiyang was staying. Since he had come to see Li Haiyang today, he might as well treat him to save him another trip.
Li Haiyang had gotten up early and was receiving massage therapy from the nurses in his room. Knowing that Luo Ziling was coming early, he only asked the nurses to take him out for a stroll and then had them push him back half an hour later.
After dismissing the two nurses and preparing to receive treatment from Luo Ziling, Li Haiyang casually asked, “I heard you caused trouble again?”
“Senior, you’re really well-informed. You even know about a nobody like me getting into fights,” Luo Ziling chuckled and replied, “Someone just cursed at me, calling me a bastard, and in anger, I gave them a little lesson, that’s all.”
“I would still advise you to restrain yourself a bit,” Li Haiyang said seriously, “Engaging in eccentric behaviors once or twice might make the elders think you are acting on impulse. But if it happens too often, they will change their view and might even take it upon themselves to discipline you, the disobedient child. ‘Do not pass three’ is my advice, whether you take it or not is up to you.”
Luo Ziling was surprised by Li Haiyang’s frankness, and after thinking seriously for a moment, he finally nodded, “Thank you for the reminder, senior. I understand.”
Li Haiyang didn’t continue on the subject but instead changed the topic to something else in a very casual tone, “Did your two friends come with you?”
“Mhm, they went off to discuss matters with Phoenix, and I’m not sure what they’re talking about,” Luo Ziling said, then he asked Li Haiyang, “Senior, later I want to discuss with Phoenix the possibility of becoming an external doctor for you all. Once it’s officially settled, I can be a bit more at ease and come over to treat you all with a proper title.”
“You just want an identity from Dragon Rise, right?” Li Haiyang pointed out bluntly.
Luo Ziling just grinned and did not deny it.
Li Haiyang didn’t say much more, just telling Luo Ziling to go and talk to Phoenix about it later.
Luo Ziling immediately felt a sense of relief.
