This Life, I Will Be the Protagonist-Chapter 327: Maple Burn - She Wasn’t Wrong
Rita took a deep breath, looked up with tears streaming down her face, and shouted loudly, "Yes! I don’t want to! I’m keeping it! I’m keeping it for Maple Syrup, Maple Mu, and Maple Cang! I’ll never use it for any other owl!"
Maple Syrup and Maple Mu were often out leveling up, and they loved to push their limits. The security in their area was poor, and several times, alien creatures had escaped the dungeon light barriers and attacked their home. Maple Cang had been injured multiple times while trying to protect them. Rita couldn’t possibly use her revival skill on some random owl with whom she had no close relationship. She was prepared for the possibility that the other owl might attack her in fury.
But Maple Mu and Maple Cang stood in front of her, and even Maple Syrup, after a long sigh, stepped in front of Maple Burn, turning to face the other owl. Although they weren’t from the same mother, their mothers were sisters, and the two had once been close. "Sorry," Maple Syrup said softly.
The other owl, Maple Gao, cried harder than Maple Burn, giving them both a cold look before turning to leave.
That evening, as the owl family sat down for dinner, Maple Syrup was the first to serve Rita some food. "Maple Burn has grown up," she said with no trace of bitterness over the rupture with her relatives.
Maple Mu rummaged through her vine bag, pulling out a delicate little pouch and slapping it onto the table. "A gift for your 5th birthday."
Rita glanced at Maple Mu, sensing the subtle change in her attitude—she was now more affectionate and unguarded around her. Even Maple Syrup and Maple Cang seemed to look at her with more warmth. She didn’t dare to point out that it was still July, and her birthday wasn’t until October. If she mentioned it, Maple Mu might take the gift back. Instead, she quickly snatched up the pouch—a 16-slot bag, even better than Maple Mu’s own—and couldn’t help but laugh. "Thanks, sis."
Maple Cang patted Rita’s head. "You’ll have to wait for my gift, but today is the happiest day of my life."
Maple Syrup laughed heartily, causing some buttered beer to spill. "You’re only 9 years old, your wings aren’t even fully developed, and you’re already talking about life!"

Rita chuckled along with Maple Syrup, wondering, "What will you do?"
You, who refuse to save even your own relatives, and unconditionally defend your daughters—how will you convince others to follow you?
Maple Syrup’s answer was clear: she didn’t need to convince anyone. She was never wrong!
She wasn’t wrong, and neither was Maple Burn.
That year, 7194 in the Ruin Kol calendar, after that day, Maple Syrup’s team disbanded. Those owls who had been with them for so long left, cursing Maple Syrup and her family for being heartless and severing their ties with her.
Maple Syrup didn’t try to defend herself. She took off her role as the guild leader and withdrew from the guild she had founded.
That same night, Maple Mu also left her team. At level 31, though she couldn’t level up as fast as the constantly over-leveled Maple Syrup, she could still form a team with Maple Syrup at level 35.
Maple Syrup, after arranging a safe spot for Maple Burn and Maple Cang, knelt before Maple Burn, looking her in the eyes, and promised, "Don’t be afraid. I’ll try my best to make sure you never have to use that skill."
For Maple Syrup, those old teammates were a burden. Her efforts and compromises had never been truly appreciated.
Like Rita, who could solo 30-level or even higher dungeons on Blue Star, Maple Syrup, though only level 35, could already handle high-level dungeons on her own. The 45-level dungeon in Forest Sea was no exception, and aside from Maple Syrup and a few others like Pine Bloom and Peach Crown, no owl dared to enter.
After securing a safe spot for her younger sisters, Maple Syrup, along with Maple Mu, went to pull monsters. While Maple Syrup used a spear, she also taught Maple Mu how to use a whip.
Maple Burn and Maple Cang didn’t gain much experience, but it was far better than fighting monsters on their own. And every day, Maple Syrup trained them in practical combat.
Rita had already developed a brutal combat style, focused on efficiency, speed, and precision. Many of her instincts were ingrained in her soul. Even though Maple Burn’s physical attributes couldn’t match her awareness, she still made quick, intuitive decisions that wouldn’t be typical of a beginner.
Rita even asked Maple Syrup to teach her how to be a proper archer. Her archery skills from Blue Star were far from enough for the battlefield. For her, long-range shooting was a good fit for her cautious, shy nature, avoiding direct confrontation.
Maple Syrup, ever versatile, could not only wield a spear and a whip, but also shoot arrows well. She crouched behind Maple Burn, wrapping her arms around her and guiding her hands to draw the bow Maple Syrup had crafted for her, helping Maple Burn fire her first arrow.
The arrow hit the target perfectly, and Maple Syrup, with childlike enthusiasm, cheered in her ear, "The sharpshooter Maple Burn has arrived!"
Rita almost laughed at Maple Syrup’s childishness, but even worse, Maple Syrup began tickling her. Both Rita and Maple Burn, the latter’s current body, were extremely ticklish. Rita had to twist and turn, dodging Maple Syrup’s hands. She thought to herself, This is definitely part of your legendary history, isn’t it?
As she tried to dodge, she glanced over at Maple Mu. She was looking at them with a soft expression that Rita rarely saw on her. It was a look she usually reserved for Maple Cang.
Rita almost thought she was imagining things, but when she turned back, Maple Mu’s expression was back to her usual confident, battle-ready smile. She then lowered her head and began stitching a bag, while Maple Cang, nearby, picked out some jewels—gifts that Maple Syrup and Maple Mu had brought back.
Maple Syrup’s battle talent was the most formidable Rita had ever seen. Often, she didn’t even need to think; her instinctual choices seemed perfectly suited to the situation. Rita had seen her defeat a beast with several times her strength in a one-on-one fight, something Rita had done before with Nivalis. However, unlike the glitchy skill "Phantom Step" or the weak combat of Nivalis, this beast was a real threat.
Maple Syrup’s success was based on her precise predictions, excellent positioning, swift attacks, and the clever use of her skills. She had killed that beast boss without taking a single hit.
Rita silently cheered inside, I want to learn this!
Luckily, she didn’t need to ask. Maple Syrup had already set her sights on teaching her daughters exactly that: how to kill monsters without taking damage—using every skill and movement to their advantage. Explore more adventures at novelbuddy
On the battlefield, soldiers were taught to bring down as many enemies as possible before their death, accepting the wounds in exchange for taking down enemies.
But as Maple Syrup’s daughter, Maple Burn didn’t need to live by that rule.
