Chapter 68: Chapter 068: The Hole

Chen Ke moved the knight’s corpse aside, picked up the Fire-igniting Broadsword that had been beneath him, and pulled out the Van Hede straight sword that was embedded in the knight’s body, wiping it on the dark corpse oil.

The recent battle had greatly boosted his confidence, for the reanimated knight had lost all the skills he possessed in life. Even without any knowledge of swordsmanship, Chen Ke could face these Medieval sword handlers head-on.

This knight must have been defeated by a squad from Si’s consortium before, but had resurrected after an unknown period. This time, it was Chen Ke’s turn to encounter him.

Chen Ke didn’t find any bullet holes on the knight’s shield or armor, so it was quite possible that the squad from Si’s consortium and Chen Ke had encountered different knights. Or perhaps, knights restored any traces from their previous battles when they resurrected? Chen Ke couldn’t know.

Chen Ke wondered if Brother Discouraged in the church hall had ever faced this knight, but from his observations, there were no shells or signs of combat in the church, suggesting that the knight’s patrol route probably didn’t include the church hall, only this stone corridor.

Chen Ke stood up, thinking of exploring other areas first, deciding he would kill the knight again if he resurrected by the time he retraced his steps, to see if he could score a shield.

...

At that moment, Chen Ke felt a strange sensation on his back, as if something was staring at him, causing him to feel a bit creeped out.

He turned to look towards the direction of the door through which the knight had entered the stone corridor.

Through the door was a large indoor hall, and in its shadow stood a ragged reanimated corpse.

The reanimated corpse held a broken sword, facing Chen Ke with empty eye sockets—it was unclear if it could still see. It was as skinny as a stick; Chen Ke felt that even a middle school girl could easily break its arm.

Chen Ke and the reanimated corpse stared at each other for a few seconds, both blankly looking at one another.

“AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!”

The reanimated corpse suddenly screamed wildly and ran deep into the hall, turning its back on Chen Ke.

“Running?”

Chen Ke was stunned, encountering a fleeing reanimated corpse for the first time. He quickly grabbed both swords and followed, as the reanimated corpse’s screams might attract all sorts of monsters, potentially even leading a few knights to him, making it a priority to eliminate it.

He took a few strides into the hall; the reanimated corpse ran clumsily and seemed likely to fall, so how could it outrun Chen Ke?

Gripping the Van Hede straight sword tightly, Chen Ke executed a jumping slash, cleaving the blade from the corpse’s head into its waist, splitting it in two.

What’s happening?

Chen Ke pulled the sword out of the living corpse’s body, his eye twitching as a bunch of lifespan increase alerts popped up. He looked around, seeing eight living corpses crawling into the hall from a stone balcony exposed on the left side of the mountain. On the right, the three wooden doors were knocked open, unleashing six more living corpses.

These living corpses were weaponless, some even naked, and Chen Ke couldn’t understand how those clinging to the exterior balcony had lasted so long.

Suddenly, a pair of bony arms hugged him around the waist. He turned to see four more living corpses suddenly emerging behind him, each holding a rusty sword.

Chen Ke instantly understood, they were setting a trap. The unarmed living corpses were meant to hold him while the armed ones attempted to slay him.

“Dream on.”

Chen Ke grabbed his sword with a backhand grip and plunged it forcefully into the head of the living corpse in front of him, from the crown to the base, then jerked it out. He quickly ran toward the staircase at the front of the hall.

There were a dozen or so living corpses, and although they were weak fighters, being surrounded was quite troublesome. Yet, finding advantageous terrain could change that.

The first thing Chen Ke saw was three small rooms on the right. He circled around a few corpses, ran past one, and casually slashed its dry neck, severing its head which flew against the wall with a crack of splintering bones.

Chen Ke leaped into one of the rooms, discovering to his surprise a sizeable kitchen. Of course, he didn’t expect to find any delicacies waiting; the stove had not been lit for a long time, and the pots were filled with indescribable black, pasty residues.

Chen Ke stood guard at the kitchen doorway, cutting down any living corpse entering, and soon, five or six bodies accumulated at his feet.

“Ah!!!!!”

Shrieks from living corpses also came from the neighboring room, a few armed with shortswords emerged from a corridor deep inside the kitchen. Chen Ke realized then that the three rooms were interconnected.

He adjusted his position, crossed over the stove, and getting behind the attacking corpses, swiftly launched his attacks, chopping them down like vegetables.

The hall grew still again. Chen Ke counted the corpses on the floor, went out to check, and everything was finally clean.

White sparks floated above the bodies. His eyes lit up, happy that killing so many living corpses finally paid off.

Upon closer inspection, there were three sparks.

Chen Ke eagerly ran over, squatted next to the bodies, reached into the sparks and then, as if remembering something, withdrew his hand.

The Holy Relics from the Great Void couldn’t be converted into diamonds; how would he take them back if he extracted them now?

Can the burst Holy Relics first take diamond form? With this question in mind, Chen Ke brought his hand closer to the small sparkling lights.

Swish!

Like the sound of the wind, or a ripple of water sweeping by, the small light quickly condensed into a white little diamond in his hand. Pleased, he processed the other two lights into diamonds and tucked them into his backpack.

Now, he didn’t know what these three Holy Relics were, but Chen Ke felt he could anticipate a bit. He wanted a new shield and some armor. Weapons, at least for now, he didn’t lack; the two swords in his hands were sufficient.

He stood up, looked around the kitchen, surveyed the area, but found nothing of value. He walked through the kitchen corridor, and just separated by one wall was another room. There, a large wooden cupboard caught Chen Ke’s attention, as he felt a faint breeze coming from its direction.

Chen Ke approached the cupboard, knocked on the door, and then carefully pulled it open.

Inside, unlike Chen Ke’s anticipation of a living corpse bursting out as he opened it, there were just normal kitchen utensils hanging, and rusty pots and pans below.

However, it was clear from the decayed wood at the back from where gusts of cold air were blowing, making the spoons gently sway.

There was a hole behind this cabinet.

Chen Ke closed the cupboard door, stood to the side, tested its weight slightly, and then pushed the cupboard bit by bit with his shoulder. As expected, once Chen Ke moved the cupboard away, a hole appeared in the wall, large enough for an adult to enter if they bent down.
